AMS-IX Bangkok goes live

AMS-IX, together with HGC Global Communications Limited (HGC) and International Gateway Company Limited (IGC), celebrated the launch of a major new Internet Exchange in the capital of Thailand.

Under the terms of the partnership, HGC will serve as a commercial partner and marketing arm for AMS-IX Bangkok, while IGC provides IX infrastructure, network, and operation in Bangkok. AMS-IX, with their expertise on peering and network monitoring, will give technical support and has operational management of the exchange.

Bangkok is strategically located at the heart of Southeast Asia which makes it ideal as an international hub for exchanging Internet traffic and a perfect location as a gateway to the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). It is one of the prime locations where Internet companies exchange Internet traffic besides Singapore and Hong Kong. Nearly 250 million eyeballs in Southeast Asia can now enjoy an uplifted online experience.


Samsung debuts first 128 GB DRAM with CXL 2.0

Samsung Electronics introduced the first 128-gigabyte (GB) DRAM to support Compute Express Link (CXL) 2.0. The new CXL DRAM supports PCle 5.0 interface (x8 lanes) and provides bandwidth of up to 35GB per second.

CXL is a next-generation interface that adds efficiency to accelerators, DRAM and storage devices used with CPUs in high-performance server systems. CXL 2.0 supports memory pooling— a memory management technique that binds multiple CXL memory blocks on a server platform to form a pool and enables hosts to dynamically allocate memory from the pool as needed. 

Samsung said the introduction of the 128GB CXL DRAM based on CXL 2.0 will accelerate commercialization of next-generation memory solutions.

Montana's Triangle Communications upgrades with Ribbon's IP Optical

Triangle Communications, a telephone cooperative in  Montana, has upgraded its network with Ribbon's IP Optical solutions. The deployment includes Ribbon's NPT IP Routing and Apollo Optical Transport platforms.

Triangle's network which covers 24,000 square miles from Chester to Malta and from the Canadian border to the Wyoming border.

EAGLE-1 consortium readies Quantum Cryptography LEO satellite system

EAGLE-1, which is a consortium led by SES and 20 European partners, is developing a quantum cryptography LEO satellite and ground infrastructure that is expected to launch in 2024. Supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Commission, EAGLE-1 will deliver secure transmission of encryption keys across geographically dispersed areas and connect EU’s national quantum communications infrastructures for truly sovereign networks.

SES has now announced a new key partner, TESAT, responsible for developing and integrating the Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) payload for the EAGLE-1 satellite. Specifically, TESAT will manufacture the QKD payload comprising the Scalable Optical Terminal SCOT80 to establish a secure optical link from space to ground, as well as the QKD module of the satellite.


“EAGLE-1 is a project that will benefit the whole of Europe, and being able to work with the leading technology players in the market to co-develop it and together shape this innovative secure technology is a privilege to SES,” said Ruy Pinto, Chief technology Officer of SES. “The addition of the secure optical links and the actual QKD module brings us closer to implementation, testing and further scaling the technology, that can ultimately serve millions of users. BlueMed subsea cable lands in Palermo

BlueMed, Sparkle's new cable that will connect Italy with France, Greece and several countries bordering the Mediterranean, has landed in Palermo, thus marking the completion of laying of the Genoa-Golfo Aranci-Pomezia-Palermo Tyrrhenian section. 

BlueMed, which is part of the Blue Submarine Cable System project built in partnership with Google and other operators, has four fibre pairs and an initial design capacity of more than 25 Tbps per pair.  Laying began in January with the branch to Sardinia (Golfo Aranci) and continued between February and March with the shore ends in Pomezia, on the coast of Rome, and in Genoa. From the Ligurian capital, the cable continues southwards to Palermo from where it will proceed through the Strait of Messina and the Mediterranean Sea down to the Red Sea.

NTT Group FY2023 revenue up 8.1%, profit up 3.4%

NTT Group’s consolidated operating revenues for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2023 were 13,136.2 billion yen (an increase of 8.1% from the previous fiscal year), consolidated operating profit was 1,829.0 billion yen (an increase of 3.4% from the previous fiscal year), and consolidated profit attributable to NTT was 1,213.1 billion yen (an increase of 2.7% from the previous fiscal year).

In July 2022, to create synergies through integration, NTT DOCOMO, NTT Communications, and NTT Comware launched a new DOCOMO Group structure.

In October 2022, NTT Group consolidated international business operations under NTT Data.

The consolidated financial forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024 is as follows: operating revenues of 13,060.0 billion yen, operating profit of 1,950.0 billion yen, and profit attributable to NTT of 1,255.0 billion yen.

AWS offers Aurora database without I/O charges

Amazon Web Services announced a new configuration for Amazon Aurora that offers improved price performance and predictable pricing for customers with input/output (I/O)-intensive applications. 

The new Aurora configuration allows customers to pay only for their database instances and storage consumption with no charges for I/O operations. 

This allows customers to confidently predict costs for their most I/O-intensive workloads, regardless of I/O variability, helping to accelerate their decision to migrate more of their database workloads to AWS. 

Aurora is a fully managed MySQL- and PostgreSQL-compatible relational database.  AWS said Aurora is in use by hundreds of thousands of customers, including Airbnb, Atlassian, and Samsung, for I/O-intensive applications like payment processing systems, ecommerce, and financial applications.

The new Aurora configuration is now generally available.

ServiceNow acquire G2K for IoT in retail storefronts

ServiceNow agreed to acquire G2K, a privately-held company based in Munich, Germany that processes real-time data across storefronts and other physical spaces. Financial terms were not disclosed.

G2K, which was ounded by Karsten Neugebauer and Omar El Gohary in 2013, uses AI to translate that data into insights that allow organizations to take action. G2K can help businesses plan inventory based on demand, improve on-site customer experiences, address in-store maintenance or other mechanical issues, and increase employee productivity. G2K employs 200+ employees and has operations in multiple countries.

ServiceNow said it plans to add G2K’s smart IoT technology to the Now Platform, enabling businesses to intelligently action digital and in-store data with enterprise-grade workflows.

AccelerComm raises £21.5m for 5G FEC optimization

AccelerComm, a start-up based in South Hampton, England announced £21.5m in Series B funding for its 5G channel coding technology.

AccelerComm which was founded in 2016 by Professor Rob Maunder at the University of Southampton, specializes in channel coding, also known as forward error correction. The company’s product suite includes a channel coding IP solution that delivers reduced latency and power consumption for 5G radio baseband processing, and LEOPhy – a complete layer 1 modem that incorporates this technology for low-earth orbit 5G satellite communications. The company has attracted talent from ARM, Qualcomm and Ericsson. AccelerComm notes that it is already working with Vodafone, Intel, AMD and National Instruments.

The domestic operations of NTT Data will be reorganized under a local holding company effective 0-July-2023.

NTT Data's domestic business has been steadily expanding, reaching a business scale of over 1.6 trillion Japanese Yen as of the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2023. The company said this new structure will help it to continue meeting the expanding and diversifying needs of the domestic market and ensure that trust established with customers over many years will be further deepened.

SAP and Google Cloud expand Open Data alliance

SAP and Google Cloud will offer enterprise customers that ability to integrate the SAP Datasphere solution with Google's data cloud. The joint offering can unify data from SAP software systems, such as SAP S/4HANA and SAP HANA Cloud, providing organizations with a comprehensive view of their most important data on Google's data cloud. Customers can federate queries across SAP Datasphere and Google's BigQuery to blend data from SAP and non-SAP software. The companies also plan to partner on joint go-to-market initiatives for enterprises' largest data projects, enabling customers to adopt data products from both SAP and Google Cloud.

Aviat Networks to acquire NEC's Wireless Transport Business

Aviat Networks agreed to acquired NEC's Wireless Transport business for $70 million in cash and shares. 

Since 2019, Aviat has served as the channel partner for NEC in North America. The companies said there is little overlap in their customer base.


For Aviat, its geographic breakdown is: 63% in North America, 16% in Africa and Middle East, 16% in LATAM and APAC, and 5% in Europe

For NEC’s wireless transport business unit, the geographic breakdown is: 64% in LATAM and APAC, 15% in Europe, 16% in Africa and Middle East, and 5% in North America.

Aviat said the aquisition brings three benefits:

  • an additional $150 million in revenue which will be accretive to adjusted EBITDA, non-GAAP EPS, and free cash flow by the end of the first year;
  • enhanced product and intellectual property portfolio;
  • a more diversified business, including over 20 Tier 1 service providers worldwide and a leading position in private networks.

OneLight Sensing adds to its team

OneLight Sensing, a start-up based in San Jose, California, appointed Rear Admiral (Ret) Christian “Boris” Becker as President of the company. Becker completed his 30-plus year career in the U.S. Navy as the senior space acquisition officer and as the Commander of the Naval Information Warfare Systems Command, a technology focused organization with over 11,000 personnel around the globe. 

OneLight Sensing (OLS) was created in November 2021 by spinning off the SA Photonics’ Sensing Division into a new, stand-alone company. OLS designs and delivers innovative solutions in the areas of lidar and hyperspectral imaging, wideband spatially coherent supercontinuum optical sources, and highly agile fiber-based laser sources. OLS leverages funding with strategic use of the Small Business Innovation Research programs (SBIR) for its product development and research.

AT&T and BlackRock launch Gigapower, a wholesale fiber provider

AT&T and BlackRock launched a joint venture company called Gigapower, which will offer a fiber network to ISP and other businesses in parts of select metro areas throughout the country using a commercial wholesale open access platform.

AT&T,  which will be the first tenant on Gigapower, said the new JV will greatly expand the number of customers and communities with access its AT&T Fiber internet service. AT&T is already the nation’s largest fiber internet provider in the U.S. and has previously announced plans to pass 30 million-plus consumer and business locations in its traditional service areas by the end of 2025. Gigapower will enable AT&T to expand its fiber service reach beyond its traditional service areas.

In addition to Las Vegas, Gigapower now expects to expand beyond its previously announced fiber deployment in Mesa, to the Chandler and Gilbert areas of Arizona. Gigapower also plans to build fiber in parts of Northeastern Pennsylvania (including Wilkes-Barre and Scranton) as well as parts of Alabama and Florida that are outside AT&T’s current service areas.

Zayo teams with Fermaca on U.S.-Mexico long-haul fiber

Zayo announced a strategic partnership with Fermaca Networks to provide diverse fiber connectivity between the United States and Mexico.

Fermaca aims to launch a new long-haul dark fiber route in Mexico in 2025, which will be the newest and longest long-haul dark fiber route in Mexico in 20 years. 


Zayo is teaming with Fermace to provide access through Queretaro with a diverse border crossing through El Paso, Texas. Queretaro has emerged as one of the most important data center hubs in Mexico.

Federated Wireless extends mobile coverage via private 5G

Federated Wireless introduced a solution that enables public cellular access through 5G private wireless networks.

Federated Wireless' Neutral Host 2.0 uses shared Citizen Broadband Radio Spectrum (CBRS) spectrum to power a single radio network that can be simultaneously shared by multiple mobile network operators (MNOs). This is in contrast to legacy Distributed Antenna System (DAS) neutral host systems that required separate radios to support differing licensed spectrum for each MNO.

“The legacy DAS model for neutral host locked customers into silos of vendor equipment and required supporting different specifications for each carrier. Digital Realty equips new Paris data center with liquid cooling

Digital Realty expanded its service offering with a new high-performance computing (HPC)-capable data center in Paris, France.

The state of the art data center in La Courneuve is equipped with a direct liquid cooling (DLC) system to support the HPC equipment.

Digital Realty said the new HPC-capable data center has been designed to be adaptable to customers’ evolving infrastructure needs while also optimizing for energy efficiency. With DLC, customers are likely to experience reductions in data processing costs – compared to traditional air-cooling methods – due to the technology’s ability to efficiently dissipate heat and reduce energy consumption, as well as make progress towards the reduction of their Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions.

Emirates Telecommunications (e&) expands alliance Vodafone

Vodafone and Emirates Telecommunications (e&, formerly Etisalat) announced a strategic relationship that establishes e& as a cornerstone shareholder of Vodafone. The deal is the next phase in a strategic relationship that began in May 2022, when e& made its original investment in Vodafone. e& now holds a 14% stake in the company.


The strategic relationship also covers a broad range of growth areas, enabling the companies to benefit from each other's respective operational scale and complementary geographic footprint. The key areas of commercial collaboration that Vodafone and e& will initially pursue include:

  • In Enterprise, Vodafone and e& will explore jointly offering cross-border digital services and solutions to multi-national customers and public sector organisations. Services will include fixed and mobile connectivity, Mobile Private Networks, IoT, cybersecurity and cloud-based services.  
  • In Procurement, Vodafone and e& will seek to share best practice and may adopt joint procurement.
  • In Carrier, Wholesale & Roaming, the two operators will work together to become the partner of choice in providing access to high-quality digital infrastructure.
  • In Technology, both teams will seek to work together on a technology roadmap, including the evolution and adoption of OpenRAN.

Under the terms of the Relationship Agreement, the Group Chief Executive Officer of e&, will join the Vodafone Board as a non-executive Director, for as long as e& maintains its current shareholding of 14.6%. e& will also have the ability to nominate a second non-executive Director, independent of e&, if its shareholding exceeds 20% (subject to certain adjustments while regulatory approvals are outstanding). These appointments are subject to receipt by e& of the required regulatory approvals.

Ciena supplies Coherent Routing and WaveLogic 5 to Great Plains Comm

Great Plains Communications (GPC), which operates a privately-owned 16,500+ mile fiber network reaching 13 states, is deploying Ciena's Coherent Routing solution and WaveLogic 5 Nano (WL5n) to: 

  • support 5G and xHaul services for fiber-to-the-tower (FTTT) customers up to 10Gb/s—10 times the previous capacity
  • provide high-performance, scalable 400G Data Center Interconnect (DCI) services to large cloud and data center operators
  • ensure the utmost resiliency of Layer 2 VPNs with Segment Routing for the protection of packet services

GPC’s network leverages Ciena’s Coherent Routing solution comprising the 5164 Router and 8110 Coherent Aggregation Router with WL5n 100G–400G coherent pluggables, as well as the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform, powered by WaveLogic coherent optics, for optical transport. The network is managed by Ciena’s Manage, Control and Plan (MCP) multi-layer domain controller.Installation, turn-up, and test services for the network were provided by Ciena Services.
