Cambridge TV White Spaces Consortium Announces Test

Cambridge TV White Spaces Consortium, a new group consisting of leading broadcasters in the UK along with technology providers, are planning a trial of TV White Spaces transmission. The test, which will be conducted in Cambridge, will explore how mobile devices can tap into unused television channels -TV white spaces - to supplement wireless broadband and cellular networks.

EC Funds 13 Photonic Research Projects

The European Commission will provide funding for thirteen photonic research projects into components for enabling cheaper and better connections at 1 Gbps and above. The funding totals EUR 22.3 million for projects that will run for two to three years and which were selected in 2010 by the European Commission, Austria, Germany, Poland, the United Kingdom and Israel. The Commission contributes one third of the funding of the projects and national funding agencies cover the rest.

ZTE Debuts TD-SCDMA Smart Devices with Marvell

ZTE has introduced two smartphones, a mobile tablet and a mobile hot spot device based on TD-SCDMA (Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) technology. All four devices are powered by Marvell's TD-SCDMA single chip solution and 802.11n Wi-Fi technology with beam-forming capability.

LightSquared Signs netTALK as LTE Wholesale Customer

LightSquared announced a wholesale LTE agreement with netTALK, a consumer electronics company. netTALK intends to offer its own branded voice and high-speed mobile data services for its customers. http://www.lightsquared.com

Microsoft Launches Office 365 Cloud Services

Microsoft launched its "Office 365" cloud service in 40 markets around the world. It brings together Microsoft Office, Microsoft SharePoint Online, Microsoft Exchange Online and Microsoft Lync Online in a cloud service based on a predictable monthly subscription. Pricing ranges from $2 to $27 per user per month.


More than 20 service providers have confirmed plans to offer Office 365, including Bell Canada, Intuit, NTT Communications, Telefonica, Telstra, and Vodafone Group Plc, among others.

Ericsson Demos LTE Advanced with 8x8 MIMO

Ericsson demonstrated LTE Advanced connectivity between its RBS 6000 base station and a moving vehicle in Kista, Sweden. The enhancements introduced with LTE Advanced include carrier aggregation and extended multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) functionality. The tests achieved speeds more than 10 times faster than those currently experienced by LTE consumers in Sweden. The meter showed between 900 Mbps and 1 Gbps of over-the-air downlink performance to the moving van.


The test system, based on the multi-mode, multi-standard RBS 6000 radio base station, was operating on a test frequency provided by the Swedish Post and Telecom Agency (PTS). The tests enabled LTE Advanced functionality such as carrier aggregation of 3 x 20MHz (60MHz aggregated) over the air in a mobile environment for the first time.


Live traffic was streamed between the RBS and a moving van from which network performance could be monitored. In the demonstration, 60MHz of aggregated bandwidth was used, compared to the 20MHz maximum that is currently possible using LTE. In the downlink, 8x8 MIMO was used.

WiGig Alliance Publishes 60 GHz Spec 1.1

The Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig) announced the publication of its certification-ready multi-gigabit wireless specification. A WiGig Bus Extension (WBE) specification has also been released to Adopter members. The WiGig Bus Extension and WiGig Serial Extension (WSE) enable high-performance multi-gigabit wireless connectivity among multiple devices, from storage devices to other high-speed peripherals and applications such as Wireless Docking. WiGig is finalizing the WSE specification and plans to publish it to Adopters in the second half of this year.

Alcatel-Lucent Selects NetLogic IPv6 Knowledge-Based Processors

Alcatel-Lucent has selected NetLogic Microsystems' NL10k knowledge-based processor optimized for IPv6 processing for its multi-terabit IP Service Router portfolio, which includes the Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router and 7450 Ethernet Service Switch.



NetLogic Microsystems' NL10k IPv6 knowledge-based processor has been optimized for Alcatel-Lucent's newly announced, 400 Gbps FP3 network processor and traffic manager. The FP3 state-of-the-art silicon was internally developed by Alcatel-Lucent and provides sophisticated traffic management and network processing at speeds up to 400 Gbps with significantly improved power efficiency.


NetLogic's NL10k knowledge-based processor delivers 1.6 billion decisions per second (BDPS) of IPv6 processing, quality-of-service (QoS), ACL security, video/voice forwarding, high-speed packet inspection, billing and VPN at line rates while maximizing energy efficiency of the overall system. The NL10k knowledge-based processor, which is manufactured in the advanced 40nm process node, integrates 128 high-performance knowledge-based processing engines, and includes an enhanced Intelligent Load Balancing Engine (ILBE) to efficiently allocate multiple tasks and communicate among all the 128 knowledge-based processing engines. The knowledge-based processing engines and ILBE are tightly coupled with integrated advanced Sahasra Algorithmic Engines (SAEs) to dramatically lower the power consumption of search processing. The NL10k processor also integrates an innovative Range Encoding Engine (REE), which employs advanced one-hot and fence encoding algorithms to implement range encoding that allows customers to effectively double the efficiency of performing port range inspection, an integral part of packet classification.

Alcatel-Lucent Unleashes its FP3 400G Network Processor

Alcatel-Lucent unveiled its 400 Gbps, "FP3" network processor for enabling the full stack of services over IP routers. The FP3 processor, which is scheduled to appear in Alcatel-Lucent's service router portfolio in 2012, supports 400 Gbps line rates, sufficient for handling 70,000 simultaneous High Definition video streams. It leverages 40nm process technology and represents the evolution of the company's 100 Gbps FP2 silicon, which was introduced in 2008 using 90nm process technology. It packs 288 RISC cores operating at 1 GHz. This compares with 112 cores at 840 MHz in the previous generation FP2 device. The new design uses 50% less power per bit than its predecessor.

Alcatel-Lucent describes the FP3 as an engineering achievement that will anchor the next wave in bandwidth-intensive Internet growth. In particular, the new silicon enables high densities of 10G, 40G and 100G ports on a single card. The plan is to deliver FP-3 based line cards for the 7750 SR and 7450 ESS platforms in 2-port 100GE, 6-port 40GE, and 20-port 10GE configurations in 2012. However, the flexibility of the design paves the way for other configurations, including 4x100G cards or native 400G interfaces. It also opens the door to scale routers with terabit class slots.



The FP3 also breaks new ground in that it enables the same full-services intelligence for core routers as has previously been possible at the metro or edge router.

"This technology puts us a generation ahead of today's fastest IP core routers – and it supports full edge services, which means it's not just moving bits, but generating revenue and creating value for service providers and their business residential and mobile customers. By making networks faster, smarter and more environmentally sustainable, Alcatel-Lucent is enabling the continuous innovation of consumer and business devices, content and applications that increasingly depend on service provider networks," stated Basil Alwan, president of Alcatel-Lucent's IP Division.

Italy's FASTWEB Selects NSN + Juniper

FASTWEB, which serves 1.7 million broadband customers across Italy, has chosen Nokia Siemens Networks and Juniper Networks to upgrade its IP backbone. Specifically, Nokia Siemens Networks deployed Juniper Networks' high-capacity T1600 flagship core routers, which were added to a Multiservice IP Backbone and integrated with the existing core and access networks. Boingo Extends Roaming to Gogo's Inflight Service

Boingo Wireless announced a roaming partnership with Gogo, which provides inflight connectivity. The deal means that Boingo customers can now log in to Gogo using their existing Boingo account. This access includes more than 1,100 planes from nine carriers, providing robust Internet access above 10,000 feet.


"The Boingo Roaming Network now extends six miles above the Earth thanks to the expansive fleet of Gogo equipped airplanes," said Luis Serrano, senior vice president of business and corporate development for Boingo Wireless. "Gogo's inflight network is a key addition to our roaming portfolio, especially since inflight access is one of the most requested service enhancements we receive through our customer feedback channels."http://www.boingo.com

FCC Releases 15th Annual Wireless Competition Report

The total service revenue generated by the mobile wireless industry reached approximately $154.7 billion in 2009, according to the FCC's newly released Annual Report and Analysis of Competitive Market Conditions With Respect to Mobile Wireless.

The report provides a look at competition across the entire mobile wireless ecosystem, including an analysis of the "upstream" and "downstream" market segments, such as spectrum, infrastructure, devices, and applications. It makes no formal finding as to whether there is, or is not, effective competition in the industry. Data is presented through the end of 2009.


Some key findings:

  • At the end of 2009, there were 274.3 million subscribers to mobile telephone, or voice, service, up nearly five percent from 261.3 million at the end of 2008.


  • At the end of 2009, there were 55.8 million subscribers to mobile Internet access services at speeds exceeding 200 kbps in at least one direction – which is more than double the number at the end of 2008.


  • Two measures of pricing for wireless services – the Cellular Consumer Price Index (CPI) and unit price (revenue per user per month divided by average unit consumption per month) – show that the price level remained generally flat during 2009. After declining every year since 1997, the annual Cellular CPI was unchanged during 2009, while the overall CPI decreased by 0.4 percent. In addition, average voice revenue per minute (RPM), rounded to the nearest cent, remained at $0.05 for the third straight year.


  • The Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI), which is calculated by summing the squared market shares of all
    firms in any given market, is a commonly used measure of industry concentration. In the mobile wireless services industry, the weighted average of HHIs (weighted by population across the 172 Economic Areas in the United States) was 2811 at the end of 2009, compared to 2842 at the end of 2008.


  • Most of the spectrum below 1 GHz suitable for the provision of mobile broadband is held by the two largest mobile wireless service providers. Verizon Wireless and AT&T together hold approximately 90 percent of Cellular spectrum based on megahertz-POPs (MHz-POPs),18 which was the first band to be licensed for commercial mobile services and has the most extensive network buildout. Verizon Wireless holds 45 percent of the MHz-POPs of Cellular and 700 MHz spectrum combined, while AT&T holds approximately 33 percent. In the Broadband PCS (PCS) and Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) spectrum between 1 GHz and 2.5 GHz, no licensee holds more than 23 percent of the MHz-POPs, with TMobile holding the most. In the 2.5 GHz band (which include the Broadband Radio Service (BRS) and Educational Broadband Service (EBS)), Clearwire holds the majority of the spectrum.


In his remarks on the report, FCC Commissioner Michael J. Copps noted darkening clouds over the state
of mobile competition. In his words, "It also appears that consumers are no longer enjoying falling prices, according to the CPI for cellular services. We know there is a looming spectrum crunch and a growing need for backhaul. There is no doubt that the mobile market is an American success story, and there are many ways to measure industry health. But it would be foolish and decidedly not in the public interest to ignore the facts
this Report reveals. If we want Americans to continue to enjoy innovation, affordability and improved mobile coverage, we must heed these facts and continue to examine areas where the Commission can act to encourage mobile competition."

Sprint Launches 4G Enterprise Access to MPLS

Ixia to Acquire VeriWave for Wireless Testing

Ixia agreed to acquire VeriWave, a performance testing company for wireless LAN (WLAN) and Wi-Fi enabled smart devices, for an undisclosed sum.


VeriWave wireless test solutions validate Wi-Fi networks, smart devices, and applications by benchmarking and measuring speed, quality, interoperability, compliance, and other pivotal aspects of wireless performance.

UNH-IOL Expands 40G/100G Test Capabilities

The University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) ha expanded the capabilities of its 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet testing services.



Members of the UNH-IOL's 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet Consortium now have devices available that are ready for testing, and the enhancements to the testing services will allow members to prepare their products for market in advance of widespread industry adoption.



"Like all new technologies, repeated multi-vendor testing is imperative to speeding the development of 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet devices, as well as driving industry acceptance of the technology," said Jeff Lapak, senior engineer for the UNH-IOL. Lulz Security Issues "Final" Statement after 50 Day Campaign

Lulz Security issued a "final statement" saying it is disbanding after 50 days of high-profile cyber attacks.


Lulz has claimed credit for, or be associated with, malicious intrusions, SQL injections, data breaches and DDoS attacks against Sony, PBS.org, Nintendo, Black & Berg Cybersecurity Consulting, Bethesda Game Studios, Minecraft, Finfisher, Infragard (associated with the FBI), U.K. National Health Service, CIA.gov website, Senate.gov website, U.K. Serious Oragnised Crime (SOSA), Brasil.gov.br, Petrobras, U.K. Census 2011, Arizona Department of Public Safety, TheSun.co.uk, AT&T, AOL, and possibly others as well. In a final act, Lulz released a massive data dump of stolen documents, user accounts & passwords and network maps from various multinational corporations and government agencies.


In its farewell statement, Lulz said it was motivated by "uninterrupted thrill of entertainment and anarchy." The group, which claims a crew of six, encouraged others to carry on its mideeds through Anonymous and other Antisec hacker groups.


Several analyst reports cited internal dissent amongst the Lulz crew as the likely cause of its disbanding. So far, only one arrest has been announced in connection with Lulz -- Ryan Cleary, a 19-year old in the U.K.http://lulzsecurity.com
