Vantage Data Centers raises US$1.35 billion

Vantage Data Centers has raised USD$1.35 billion in securitized notes to be used to refinance existing financings in place for three data centers on the company’s flagship Northern Virginia campus and five data centers in the province of Quebec, Canada, as well as to fund general corporate needs.

Deutsche Bank Securities acted as Sole Structuring Advisor. In addition to Deutsche Bank, Societe Generale, Truist Securities and Wells Fargo Securities acted as Joint Active Bookrunning Managers on the transaction.

“This transaction is Vantage’s ninth securitization financing since 2018. It’s also our fourth green financing bringing our total green loan financings to more than $2 billion,” said Sharif Metwalli, Vantage’s chief financial officer. “This financing provides an even stronger financial position for our North American platform and enables us to continue scaling the business to meet customer demand in an environmentally friendly way. We appreciate the ongoing support and partnership from our lead investor, DigitalBridge, and their confidence in us to grow the business to not only meet our customers’ IT requirements but also to align with our customers’ sustainability goals.”

“Vantage is delivering on its growth strategy, and despite inflation and the challenging capital markets, investors continue to be confident in Vantage’s ability to execute as evidenced by this securitization,” said Jon Mauck, senior managing director at DigitalBridge. “We look forward to further building on this momentum to drive value for our stakeholders, not only in North America, but around the world. Vantage is uniquely positioned for long-term growth with a leading digital infrastructure platform designed for the world’s preeminent hyperscalers and cloud providers.”

  • Vantage recently announced that AustralianSuper, Australia’s largest pension fund, will invest €1.5 billion to acquire a significant minority stake in Vantage’s EMEA business, joining DigitalBridge as a key shareholder.

Vantage Data Centers invests £500 million in 48MW London campus

Vantage Data Centers unveiled plans for a 48MW £500 million data center campus in London. The new facility, which is situated on nearly five acres (two hectares) in the PowerGate neighborhood of North Acton, an established data center community in the northwest part of the city, will total 430,000 square feet (40,000 square meters) across two 24MW multi-story data centers once fully developed.

The first facility will open its doors to hyperscale customers and cloud providers in late 2024, which will mark Vantage’s 11th campus in EMEA.

“Vantage has experienced rapid growth over the past three years as we continue developing state-of-the-art data center campuses across EMEA,” said Antoine Boniface, president, EMEA at Vantage Data Centers. “With London being one of the largest data center markets in the world, this expansion further solidifies Vantage’s role at the forefront of the digital infrastructure revolution. With relatively little inventory available in London and requirements on the rise, we are ideally positioned to deliver for our customers.”

“The continuing demand for data centers in London offers a prime opportunity for Vantage Data Centers to make its entrance into the highly-coveted market,” said Tim Kay, deputy director for technology, Department for International Trade in London. “Vantage’s presence in London will play a key role in enabling leading technology enterprises with additional IT capacity to support digital transformation initiatives and cloud adoption.”

In addition to the development of its London campus, Vantage has completed the first phase (12MW) of a second 40MW facility at its growing Cardiff campus, located in Wales, the second largest data center market in the U.K. The new facility boasts one of the lowest power usage effectiveness (PUE) ratios across all of Vantage’s facilities thanks in part to its extremely energy efficient indirect evaporative free cooling system, which negates the need for compressors in the cooling cycle. Once fully developed, the 46-acre campus (19 hectares) will include three data centers totaling 148MW across 2 million square feet (186,000 square meters). Conveniently located in the U.K.’s tech corridor near the M4 and just 100 miles (160 kilometers) from London’s urban density, the campus offers numerous connectivity options with low latency between Wales and London of less than 1.5 milliseconds. The sustainable campus operates entirely on renewable energy sources.

Vantage to build 16MW data center in Frankfurt

Vantage Data Centers disclosed plans to build the second of three facilities on its flagship 55MW EU campus (FRA1) located in Offenbach, Germany, just one kilometer from the main data centers and peering points in Frankfurt. This facility will include 16MW of critical IT capacity and 13,000 square meters (140,000 square feet) once fully developed and will open to customers in the first half of 2024.

In addition, Vantage has acquired full ownership of the first data center on this campus, buying out its joint venture partners Energieversorgung Offenbach (EVO) and DataCenter-Group (DCG). Vantage will continue in a new partnership with EVO as the energy provider and landowner of the campus. Terms of the deal are not being disclosed.

“Vantage continues to accelerate our growth in Frankfurt and Offenbach, the most sought-after data center markets in Europe, to meet demand from our hyperscale and cloud customers,” said Antoine Boniface, president of EMEA for Vantage Data Centers. “Our partnership with EVO and DCG was instrumental in opening this

Furthering its commitment to be a responsible corporate citizen, Vantage, alongside EVO, will repurpose the waste heat from the new data center and make it available to the local community for heating purposes. This unique initiative supports Vantage’s sustainable construction goals and enables the company to make a positive impact in the region.

Vantage recently announced that it has also begun construction on a second campus in Frankfurt to meet increased customer demand. The two campuses combined will have 95MW of critical IT capacity in the Frankfurt region once fully developed.

Vantage Data Centers cites progress with its massive Phoenix campus

Vantage Data Centers  announced the topping out of its first 32MW data center in Goodyear, Arizona, just outside of Phoenix.

This will be the company’s largest North American campus when fully developed at 160MW and second largest globally, after its 270MW Cardiff campus in the U.K.  Located on 50 acres within Goodyear’s “Bullard Tech Corridor,” this growing campus will include three data centers and more than 1 million square feet once fully developed.

The first phase of development will be comprised of a single-story facility offering 32MW of critical IT capacity and is scheduled to be operational in the spring.

Vantage notes that its new Phoenix campus will employ a closed-loop chilled water system with air-side economizers that allows for reduced energy use based on outside ambient temperature. The system uses no ongoing water, a critical feature in this region, making the planned water usage efficiency (WUE) near zero (liters/kW/hr).

“As we continue to expand globally, Vantage is also increasing our footprint across North America to meet our customers growing needs, providing high-quality data centers in strategic markets,” said Jeff Tench, president, North America, Vantage Data Centers. “Our customers have identified Phoenix as an ideal location due to its low power costs, rich connectivity and business-friendly environment. This is a fitting market for hyperscalers, cloud providers and larger enterprises who need a west coast presence for their digital infrastructure requirements.”

Vantage Data Centers raises $530 million for refinancing

Vantage Data Centers raised US$530 million in securitized notes that will primarily be used to refinance the company’s Variable Funding Note (VFN) facility, which was used to facilitate the CA22 transaction in September 2021, as well as to fund general corporate needs.

The notes are a five-year issuance (Series 2021-1) and are rated A- by Standard & Poor’s. They generally rank pari-passu with Vantage’s existing outstanding notes. The transaction was supported by DigitalBridge Investment Management, the investment management arm of Vantage’s majority stakeholder, DigitalBridge Group.

“This transaction marks Vantage’s seventh securitization financing since 2018 when we pioneered the use of this approach in the data center sector,” said Sharif Metwalli, Vantage’s chief financial officer. “We are faced with increasing demand for premiere hyperscale data centers that can be delivered quickly and sustainably. Our strong financial position enables us to continue our global expansion with favorable interest rates that not only reduce our overall costs but further strengthen our competitive position in the market. We appreciate DigitalBridge’s partnership throughout this process and their continued support to grow our business.”

Vantage Data Centers commits to Net Zero Carbon emissions

Vantage Data Centers has committed to achieve net zero carbon emissions globally by 2030.

Vantage said its goal specifically targets reductions for emissions that the company directly controls, Scope 1 and 2 emissions, as well as reductions that it can guide or influence throughout its supply chain. Vantage is creating interim reduction targets that are in alignment with the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) methodology, which defines and promotes emissions reduction in line with climate science.

“As major consumers of power and land, data center operators have an undeniable responsibility to aggressively reduce emissions and lessen environmental impacts wherever possible. This is why we’ve set our target at net zero rather than carbon neutral,” explained Justin Thomas, chief technology officer, Vantage Data Centers. “Our goal is to be a sustainability leader, and we are setting interim reduction goals that touch every part of our business.”
