AWS Cloud WAN connects on-prem data centers, branches, regions

Amazon Web Services introduced AWS Cloud WAN, a new managed wide area network (WAN) service that connects on-premises data centers, colocation facilities, branch offices, and AWS Regions into a single, unified global network with just a few clicks in a central management dashboard.  This removes the need to configure and manage individual networks that use different technologies. Using the central management dashboard, networking teams can have a single view of their global network, apply policies, and automate configuration and security tasks across their entire network.

For example, with just a few clicks, teams can quickly and easily apply a policy that requires network traffic from branch offices to be routed through a specific network firewall before reaching cloud resources running in an AWS Region.

AWS Cloud WAN integrates with leading SD-WAN, network appliance, and independent software vendors—including Aruba, Aviatrix, Checkpoint, Cisco Meraki, Cisco Systems, Prosimo, and VMware—making it easier for customers to connect their on-premises SD-WAN devices to AWS. Enterprises can now use AWS Cloud WAN to simplify the way they build, manage, and monitor their networks using a single dashboard with minimal complexity.

“Many wide area networks used by enterprises today consist of a patchwork of connections between branch offices and data centers that were optimized for applications that run on premises,” said David Brown, vice president of Amazon EC2 at AWS. “As the edge of the cloud continues to be pushed outward, and more customers move their applications to AWS to become more agile, reduce complexity, and save money, they need an easier way to evolve their networks to support a modern, distributed model that allows them to reach their customers and end users globally with high performance. With AWS Cloud WAN, enterprises can simplify their operations and leave the time-consuming task of managing complex webs of networks behind.”

AWS Cloud WAN is available in US East (Ohio), US East (N. Virginia), US West (N. California), Africa (Cape Town), Asia Pacific (Mumbai), Asia Pacific (Singapore), Asia Pacific (Sydney), Asia Pacific (Tokyo), Canada (Central), Europe (Frankfurt), Europe (Ireland), Europe (Milan), Europe (Paris), Europe (Stockholm), and Middle East (Bahrain).

Google Cloud intros managed in-memory data store for Redis

Google launched a public beta of a fully-managed in-memory data store service for Redis,

The company says its Cloud Memorystore provides a scalable, more secure and highly available Redis service that is fully compatible with open source Redis, letting you migrate your applications to Google Cloud Platform (GCP) with zero code changes.

Redis is an open-source in-memory database project implementing a distributed, in-memory key-value store. It supports data structures and features like persistence, replication and pub-sub.

IBM Boosts Support to OpenStack’s RefStack Project

IBM is confirming its lead role in the OpenStack RefStack Project, which was created last year as part of the OpenStack community’s effort to drive interoperability across clouds. The ability to move data and apps from one cloud to another is a major obstacle in the evolution of cloud and business.

IBM, which is the lead contributor to RefStack, said the project is a critical pillar of its commitment to ensuring an open cloud.

The specific upgrades to the upcoming RefStack release include:

  • User functionality and usability enhancements to allow easier, more streamlined visibility into test data for OpenStack release compatibility.
  • Tempest plug-in enablement to allow users to expand existing test suites to include external test cases.
  • Stability enhancements to expand the availability of the RefStack service and support a growing number of RefStack users.
  • Additionally, RefStack will soon enable vendor registration, allowing community members to easily correlate test results in RefStack’s central repository with specific OpenStack vendors – ensuring results are more transparent.

“The OpenStack ecosystem is very rich and rapidly evolving, and provides an extremely strong foundation for real interoperability. However, achieving this will require deep, sustained collaboration across the open community,” said Angel Diaz, Vice President of Cloud Architecture and Technology at IBM. “We are ready and willing to work with every single OpenStack cloud provider on this, and are challenging the OpenStack community to collaborate with us. We are determined to provide customers with the flexibility they want – regardless of their provider – so that they have a global platform for business and innovation.”

Dell’Oro: Data Center Switching Growth Driven by Big Clouds

The Ethernet Switch – Data Center market grew strongly in the first quarter 2015 to slightly more than $2.0 billion, according to a new report from Dell'Oro Group, thanks to spending from big cloud operators such as Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, and Microsoft.

The Quarterly Ethernet Switch – Data Center Report also indicates that Cloud Customers will begin migrating to 25 and 100 GE at the end of 2015.

“Strong adoption of 40 GE amongst large US Cloud customers drove strong year-over-year growth in the Ethernet Switch – Data Center market,” said Alan Weckel, Vice President of Ethernet Switch – Data Center market research at Dell’Oro Group.  “When Dell’Oro Group looks at the overall data center market, many trends are similar between Servers, Storage, and Networking, such as the movement by Cloud customers to white box / bare metal solutions.  We are often able to leverage our holistic coverage to forecast trends early and accurately before they become widespread, such as the upcoming market migration to 25 GE server access, or the recent movement in large US Cloud customers to 40 GE,” stated Weckel.

Dell Acquires Gale Tech. for Private and Hybrid Cloud Automation

Dell has acquired Gale Technologies, a developer of automation software that allows streamlines the deployment of on-premise and hybrid clouds, for an undisclosed sum.

Gale Technologies, which is based in Santa Clara, California, offers management and orchestration tools that turn discrete compute, network and storage components into integrated and highly optimized application, virtual desktop infrastructure. Gale Technologies said its solution delivers automated physical and virtual resource allocation, preserves best practice enterprise infrastructure deployment through reusable templates, and masks that complexity from the end user to provide a valuable enterprise asset. Gale was founded in 2008.

Dell plans to integrate Gale with its own Active Infrastructure family.

Separately, Dell announced the creation of a new  Enterprise Systems & Solutions division, which will be headed by Dario Zamarian.
