Qualcomm has formed an independent subsidiary to pursue the opportunity for medical device connectivity.
Qualcomm Life is developing the technology-agnostic, "2net" platform for linking medical devices with cloud-based data centers. The idea is to capture biometric data, encrypt it and then transmit it via a smartphone or 2net home gateway device to customer-designated healthcare providers. Qualcomm Life said it plans to work with multiple carriers to transmit data according to HIPAA regulations. The company said it already has 40 customers and collaborators either integrating with or considering the 2net ecosystem.
In addition, a $100 million Qualcomm Life Fund has been established to support the ecosystem. The fund will be managed by Qualcomm Ventures, its investment arm. http://www.qualcommlife.com/
