Nokia Acquires MetaCarta, Novarra

Nokia acquired MetaCarta, a start-up specializing in geographic intelligence technology. The company is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and employs about 30 people. Financial terms were not disclosed.


MetaCarta's technology combines geosearch and geotagging capabilities, allowing users to find content about a location in internal and external data stores. This makes make data and unstructured content "location-aware" and geographically relevant for easier organization and quicker action. Nokia said MetaCarta's technology will be used in the area of local search in Location and other services.


Separately, Nokia confirmed that it has completed the acquisition of Novarra, which offers a mobile browser and services platform. This will be used by Nokia to deliver enhanced Internet experiences on Nokia Series 40 mobile phones.
