Alcatel-Lucent's Bell Labs Describes Single-Carrier 224 Gbps

Researchers from Alcatel-Lucent's Bell Labs demonstrated a range of technology advances at last month's Optical Fiber Conference (OFC) in San Diego, California, including higher-order modulation techniques, use of multi-stage algorithms and increased spectral efficiencies that enable the transmission of significantly higher bit rates over increasingly longer distances. The optical transmission technologies demonstrated by Bell Labs were presented in a series of juried research papers reviewed in rigorous evaluation process and accepted by the OFC program committee. Alcatel-Lucent highlighted the following items:

Field transmission of optical OFDM1 signals carrying greater than 100 Gbps -- A key step forward in the evolution of new modulation formats over existing fiber infrastructure. Involves transmission of 3x253Gb/s OFDM-Superchannels over 764 km field deployed single mode fibers. Employs ten G.652 fiber spans, provided by Deutsche Telekom AG and makes use of OFDM channels spaced 100GHz apart that cover a bandwidth of 90GHz and result in a configuration compatible with a 100GHz grid.

Next-Generation 400 Gigabit per second transmission -- Generation and detection of a novel spectrally-efficient format occupying a bandwidth of only 60 GHz. Involves 448-Gbps Reduced-Guard-Interval CO-OFDM Signal with 7 bit-per second-Hz channel spectral efficiency and transmission over 2000-km of ULAF and five 80-GHz-Grid optical add-drop multiplexers.

40% increase of single-carrier bit rate, up to 224-Gbps -- An improvement over the highest previous 20 Gbaud (160 Gbps) single-carrier line rate demonstrated in PDM 16-QAM transmission. Single-carrier multilevel modulation at high symbol rates enables a simpler transmitter structure. Aruba Networks Extends Virtual Branch Office into the Cloud

Aruba Networks has extended its Virtual Branch Networking (VBN) architecture with new capabilities for moving application acceleration and content security services away from costly branch appliances and into the cloud. The company's VBN strategy, which was first rolled out in May 2009, uses low-cost wireless access point CPE to connect remote users and branch locations with enterprise applications and network policies. The low-cost devices create secure tunnels over the Internet back to an enterprise Aruba wireless LAN controller, where corporate security policies are maintained.

The new Virtual Branch Networking (VBN) 2.0 solution breaks new ground by migrating application acceleration and security filtering services into the cloud.

Aruba estimates that by eliminating branch office appliances and administration, capital expenditures can be reduced by up to 60% and operating expenses by up to 75%.

Key features of VBN 2.0 include:

  • Application Acceleration Service (AAS) -- a cloud service that can accelerate the performance of applications in the branch office by 20x, without requiring any new hardware or software in the branch. Applications benefiting from this include e-mail, Web browsing, and file sharing applications.

  • Content Delivery Network (CDN) - a subscription-based file caching service further speeds up application response times in a branch office by leveraging a cloud-based CDN to serve files locally from a nearby data center. This affordable service can be acquired on an as-needed basis and requires no additional hardware or software in the branch office;

  • Content Security Service (CSS) -- a cloud service that dramatically reduces the cost and complexity of protecting sensitive data across the distributed enterprise. CSS provides anti-virus/anti-spam protection, real-time content filtering, and data leakage prevention without the need for any new branch office hardware or software. Instantaneous and long-term historical reports can quickly identify policy violations.

Also as part of the VBN 2.0 solution, Aruba is introducing a Virtual Intranet Access (VIA) client. VIA provide road warriors and other mobile workers with Windows-based laptops, netbooks, and PCs with user-friendly, secure access to the corporate network without separate, dedicated VPN infrastructure.

"Digital Due Process" Alliance Seeks Privacy Assurance for Cloud Services

Major Internet players, including Amazon.com, AOL, AT&T, Google, Intel, Microsoft, SalesForce.com and others, have formed an industry initiative aimed at updating the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) of the United States so as to assure the privacy of cloud-based services.

Specifically, the "Digital Due Process" alliance said it wants to modernize ECPA in four ways:

  • Better protect your data stored online: The government must first get a search warrant before obtaining any private communications or documents stored online;

  • Better protect your location privacy: The government must first get a search warrant before it can track the location of your cell phone or other mobile communications device;

  • Better protect against monitoring of when and with whom you communicate: The government must demonstrate to a court that the data it seeks is relevant and material to a criminal investigation before monitoring when and with whom you communicate using email, instant messaging, text messaging, the telephone, etc.; and

  • Better protect against bulk data requests: The government must demonstrate to a court that the information it seeks is needed for a criminal investigation before it can obtain data about an entire class of users.

"The traditional standard for the government to search your home or office and read your mail or seize your personal papers is a judicial warrant. The law needs to be clear that the same standard applies to email and documents stored with a service provider, while at the same time be flexible enough to meet law enforcement needs," stated Jim Dempsey, Vice President for Public Policy at the Center for Democracy and Technology.

Qwest Requests $350 Million in Broadband Stimulus Funds for Rural Projects

Qwest Communications is seeking $350 million in broadband stimulus funding to extend broadband at speeds of 12 to 40 Mbps to rural communities throughout its local service region, which is comprised of 14 Midwestern and Western states.

In its application, Qwest proposes to build facilities to serve more than half a million homes, schools, businesses and hospitals that lack access to today's high-speed Internet capabilities. It plans to introduce the service at download speeds of 12 to 40 Mbps.
The total cost of the proposed deployment would be $467 million. Qwest is requesting a grant for $350 million from the Broadband Initiatives Program (BIP), which is administered by the Rural Utilities Service, an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). When Congress enacted the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act last year, it directed the USDA to establish a program that would stimulate broadband deployment to hard-to-serve rural areas. The BIP provides 75 percent of the build-out costs. The remaining 25 percent, or $117 million, would be funded by Qwest.

"Much like the water and electric programs the government established to encourage rural development, federal grants are needed to enable the deployment of broadband to high-cost, unserved areas," said Steve Davis, senior vice president of Qwest Public Policy and Government Relations.

Andrew Offers SmartBeam Base Station Tool

Andrew Solutions introduced a SmartBeam base station antenna tool that helps wireless operators achieve load balancing across a cell site or even a whole network cluster of 3G, LTE and WiMAX cell sites.

SmartBeam offers three levels of base station antenna pattern adjustments -- beam tilting, panning, and fanning -- which can be conducted from a central office via Andrew's ANMS (Antenna Network Management System).

When used in combination, the three pattern adjustments enable wireless operators to re-distribute capacity across a network cluster of sites based on changing traffic patterns. The company said this process yields a significant improvement in capacity efficiency while delaying or preventing the expensive addition of new cell sites or radios. SmartBeam antennas can also enhance network quality by providing the capability to deliver stronger signal strength, minimized interference, reduced number of dropped calls, and higher data rates.

Andrew's SmartBeam works by utilizing "Next Generation Actuators" installed under the antenna radome, which enable the three pattern adjustments. Remote electrical tilt BSAs currently deployed in many wireless networks essentially perform vertical beam tilting. SmartBeam, however, adds the horizontal panning and beamwidth fanning that make the next generation of network optimization capabilities truly possible. Beamwidth fanning can result in antenna patterns narrowed or broadened from 35 to 105 degrees. Andrew currently offers seven SmartBeam base station antenna models with one, two or three pattern adjustment capabilities.

Trials of SmartBeam antennas are underway.

An HSPA metro femtocell is a new class of device that provides a targeted, low-cost solution that provides seamless capacity relief for increasingly congested macro networks. It backhauls over the IP infrastructure already deployed -- typically cable or DSL. A single Colo-Node HSPA metro femtocell provides a range of up to 2km at pedestrian and vehicular speeds.

Each Colo-Node HSPA unit contains up to four Ubiquisys femtocell modules, each with 16 calls / 14.4Mbps HSPA data capacity. The modules are powered by Ubiquisys Femto-Engine software, which ensures adaptive compatibility with the macro network and provides handover with other femtocells and the macro network for service continuity. If the macro is replanned, the metro femto immediately adapts according to operator policies.

Powerwave Introduces 700 MHz LTE Repeaters

Powerwave Technologies introduced its 700 MHz wideband Nexus FT single-input single-output (SISO) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) repeaters for the U.S. market.

The LTE repeater systems can be used for extending the capacity and reach of existing wireless networks. The coverage systems enable end users to leverage 3G and 4G features and functionality as they move throughout coverage areas within indoor environments such as airports, office buildings, shopping malls and subways.

The Nexus FT 700 Public Safety repeater system offers similar benefits and advantages for public safety networks.

Powerwave's new Nexus FT 700 LTE and Public Safety repeaters can be deployed up to 15 miles from an existing base station while delivering support for multi-protocol wireless systems.
