MWC Keynote: Google Says 60,000 Android Devices Ship Per Day

The number of Android-powered devices, including netbooks and smartphones, has risen to over 60,000 per day, said Google CEO Eric Schmidt, in a keynote address at Mobile World Congress.

Micro-blogging and social networking tools will drive the rapid rollout of sensory-based online services, according to Schmidt. For example, the U.S. Embassy in Beijing has established an hourly Twitter update that posts air-quality information at its location. These types of automated information feeds can now be easily established. Google also demonstrated how sensory data can be tied into Search. A mobile phone running Google Goggles was used to photograph text from a German menu. The Google engine used OCR to convert it into text and then translate it to English.

Google also demonstrated Adobe Flash running on Android.
