Telefónica Spain has undertaken a 3G network expansion which will extend its service reach by more than 25% in dense urban areas. The expansion, which will also improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact, has been carried out by Nokia Siemens Networks. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The network upgrade features Nokia Siemens Networks' Flexi Base Station. As the industry's smallest, and most energy efficient base station, the Flexi can offer energy savings of up to 70 percent. Telefónica expects to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 9,500 tones per year, which can be compared to getting 1,800 vehicles off the roads in Spain.
