Skype suffered a widespread outage on Thursday which the company attributed to a deficiency in an algorithm within its peer-to-peer networking software. The algorithm controls the interaction between the user's own Skype client and the rest of the Skype network.
Skype said its system had not crashed nor was it the victim of a cyber attack. Initial estimates were 12 to 24 hours to restore service.
