Fujitsu Limited was awarded a contract for the upgrade of the Japan-US Cable Network by a consortium of seven carriers, including AT&T Corp, KDDI Corporation, NTT Communications, Qwest Communications International, Reach Global Networks, Softbank Telecom, and Verizon Business. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The upgrade to the submarine fiber-optic cable system involves deployment of Fujitsu's FLASHWAVE S650 submarine line terminal equipment at three landing points each in Japan and the US. The FLASHWAVE S650 series is capable of more than doubling the original design capacity of 640 Gbps Japan-US Cable Network to 1.28 Tbps and beyond.
