China Telecom Taps Alcatel for Optical Backbone

China Telecom awarded a multimillion dollar contract to Alcatel Shanghai Bell deploy an optical backbone network spanning 2,300 km across the southeastern part of China. The new transport infrastructure will provide connectivity for the ChinaNet2 (CN2) network.



The new optical backbone network will link seven Chinese cites and will be composed of two main transmission lines: one spanning from Shanghai to Guangzhou through Changsha and the other one connecting Shanghai to Xuzhou, via Chongming, Nantong and Lianyungang.

  • In September 2004, it was announced that China Telecom will deploy Nortel Networks Optical Long Haul 1600 Optical Line Systems to expand its optical backbone networks in the cities of Wuhan, Guangzhou, Changsha, Fuzhou, Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Hefei, Chongqing, and Chengdu.
