Verizon Wireless Updates is BroadbandAccess Plans

Verizon Wireless announced equipment contracts with Nortel Networks and Lucent Technologies for the expansion of its BroadbandAccess 3G service across the U.S. The company also announced agreements with SK Telecom, Citrix and Zumasys. Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess, which will be launched in many major U.S. cities later this year, is powered by a CDMA2000 1xEV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized) 3G technology. The network offers average user speeds of 300-500 kbps.

Verizon Wireless signed a two-year agreement with Nortel Networks to provide wireless infrastructure for its BroadbandAccess service. Through 2005, Verizon Wireless is expected to spend US$167 million on Nortel Networks wireless infrastructure technology that enables BroadbandAccess. Nortel Networks was a primary supplier in San Diego for Verizon Wireless' initial commercial deployment of BroadbandAccess in October 2003. Nortel Networks will upgrade existing base stations throughout the network with new Metro Cell base stations, modules and associated services.

Verizon Wireless signed a two year agreement with Lucent Technologies under which it expects to invest more than $525 million in Lucent's wireless infrastructure technology to expand BroadbandAccess. Lucent will upgrade existing Lucent base stations with 1xEV-DO Modem Cards and software and provide 1xEV-DO-enabled Flexent Modular Cell 4.0 base stations as required. Verizon Wireless will also upgrade its core network utilizing Lucent supplied 1xEV-DO Radio Network Controllers (RNCs) and Element Management Systems. Lucent Worldwide Services will provide network installation, integration, and optimization services.

Citrix Systems, a provider of access infrastructure solutions, and Zumasys, a national solutions integrator, announced that Continental Laboratory Products (CLP) is the first customer to roll out a mobile access solution combining Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server and Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess high-speed wireless service. CLP's field representatives are able to access the wireless network using Panasonic Toughbooks, MetaFrame Presentation Server and the PC5220 manufactured by Sierra Wireless. http://www.verizonwireless.com
