SMC Networks announced its newest Gigabit backbone switch -- the TigerSwitch 10/100/1000 48-Port Managed Switch -- with a list price of $4,599. Four of the ports can be upgraded with optional mini GBIC expansion slots for fiber connections. In addition to RADIUS, 802.1x, SSH and SSL for security, the new switch offers Layer 2/3/4 switching with traffic prioritization, including DSCP-based CoS and TCP/UDP Port-based CoS, as well as port and protocol-based VLANs. The also offers rate-limiting, Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). SMC plans future upgrades for SNMPv3, Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (802.1s) that allows single spanning tree within VLANs, and Access Control List (ACL).
