WSJ: Large Telecom Firms, After WorldCom Move, Consider Write-Downs

AT&T and Qwest Communications are considering additional write-downs in the value of their networks in the wake of WorldCom's recent announcement that it will write nearly $80 billion off its balance sheet for the diminished value of goodwill and network assets, according to The Wall Street Journal. The financial move might give WorldCom a competitive advantage because its depreciation costs will be lower moving forward.
