STMicroelectronics and Ikanos Achieve Chip-Level DMT-VDSL Interoperability

Ikanos Communications and STMicroelectronics have achieved chip-level interoperability based on Discrete Multi-Tone-Very-high-data rate Digital Subscriber Line (DMT-VDSL) technology. Their chips comply with the ITU-T, ETSI, and ANSI standard band plans, including Plan 997 and Plan 998, and operate at data rates of over 50 Mbps. The companies argue that since carriers have already standardized on DMT for their ADSL transmission, DMT-based VDSL offers backward compatibility with a large installed base. Alcatel is supportive of using DMT modulation for VDSL and has demonstrated the technology for delivery of video services using its Alcatel 7300 DSLAM.

  • In December 2002, Metalink and Infineon Technologies demonstrated interoperability between their respective standards-based Ethernet over Very-high-speed Digital Subscriber Line (EoVDSL) chipsets. The companies said their Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) VDSL chipsets are fully compliant with ETSI, ANSI (plan 997, plan 998) and the expanded ITU VDSL standards requirements.
