Infinera tests point-to-multipoint coherent pluggable with Sumitomo Electric

Infinera and Sumitomo Electric completed the first testing of point-to-multipoint coherent pluggable transceiver technology in Japan.

The XR optics point-to-multipoint integration testing , which was conducted in Infinera’s Tokyo lab facilities, was implemented over an existing PON network using Infinera ICE-X 100G and 400G coherent pluggables transceivers hosted in the Sumitomo Electric FTU 9100 metro/access aggregation switch. The test showcased how XR optics can increase capacity and reach by orders of magnitude by overlaying coherent wavelengths over existing single-fiber (bidirectional) PON networks.

The testing included demonstrations of the following: high-speed business services over existing single-fiber PON infrastructure, simplified network aggregation for emerging services and applications such as 5G and edge computing, and efficient point-to-multipoint metro traffic transmission over existing optical line systems. These demonstrations underscore the value XR optics bring to service providers to cost-efficiently increase capacity and expand service offerings.

Graphiant: 2023 State of Network Edge Survey

Enterprises have rapidly adopted "as-a-service" models for applications, storage and computing and are now poised to do the same for Network-as-a-Service (NaaS), according to a recent survey conducted by Eleven Research on behalf of Graphiant.

The survey, which collected 200 responses from large enterprises in North American, found that MPLS and SD-WAN are failing to meet the needs of emerging network edge use cases.

 "This happens every 10-11 years," says Khalid Raza, founder & CEO of Graphiant. "I saw this in 2000 while pioneering MPLS at Cisco. I saw it when I co-founded Viptela in 2012. And now It’s time again for a new approach to the network edge.”

 Respondents called out three critical uses cases:

  • Enterprise connectivity has changed in recent years, with a surge in remote workers, remote offices, and IoT.
  • Cloud connectivity is the second use case that stretches enterprise capabilities.
  • And trends such as digital transformation and the service economy are pushing enterprises to connect more often with customers and partners.

"These new use cases are tough for MPLS and SD-WAN," says Robert Spangler, Senior Network Engineer at Ballad Health. "MPLS is too slow to deploy and change and far too expensive. And SD-WAN can't handle that number of tunnels."

In March, Graphiant, a start-up based in San Jose, California, announced a $62 million Series B funding round for its network edge service that promises to shake up the established framework of VPNs, including MPLS and SDWAN.

Graphiant provides a next-gen network edge that combines the performance and security of MPLS with the agility of “as-a-Service” delivery. The company says it can deliver SLA-class performance at up to 70% less cost.

Aligned Data Centers invests in Québec's QScale

Nokia and Claro deploy private 4.9G in a maritime terminal in Colombia

Claro Colombia has deployed a private 4.9G wireless network and edge computing solution at Sociedad Portuaria Puerto Bahía in Cartagena, Colombia, using the Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (DAC), including the Nokia MX Industrial Edge.

The installation, which delivers high bandwidth and low latency, will reliably and securely connect hundreds of workers, sensors, equipment, vehicles and cargo.

Nokia DAC will be the key enabler of Puerto Bahía's digital transformation journey, which will begin with automation in the hydrocarbons terminal area. One of the more innovative use cases to be implemented is the tracking of up to 20,000 vehicles at peak capacity. Nokia DAC will also provide connectivity between TOS (Terminal Operation Systems) and personnel, and between cranes in docks and yards to optimize operations.

Windstream Wholesale launches Regional 400G ZR+ service

Windstream Wholesale introduced a  "Regional Rapid Fiber" wavelength service based on 400G ZR+ pluggables.

The service offers point-to-point connections within multiple regional sites across Windstream’s Intelligent Converged Optical Network (ICON).

Connectivity is accessible within approximately 50 regional POPs across Windstream’s ICON network affording customers the following:

  • pre-deployed 400G capacity for rapid turn-up;
  • unique service flexibility, including technical proof of performance options;
  • short-term, event-based 400G options but priced like long-term services;
  • risk-free migration path from 100G to 400G;
  • capacity reservation service, and
  • dual, diverse, economic 400G wave options.

The new Regional Rapid Fiber 400G wave service is slated for network deployment and customer turn-up in early summer 2023.

Infinera hits 61.3 Tbps on simulated 1,240km Telstra InfraCo intercity link

Infinera achieved 61.3 terabits per second (Tbps) of unregenerated data transmission capacity on a fiber pair over a simulated intercity network trial for Telstra InfraCo’s intercity fiber project in Australia. 

The network trial, which simulated transmission over the equivalent of 1,240 route kilometers between Melbourne and Sydney, was implemented using Infinera’s 800G-capable ICE6 coherent solution and Corning’s SMF-28 ULL fiber with advanced bend, demonstrating the high-performance capability of the express network, which is part of the intercity fiber network Telstra InfraCo is building across Australia.

Infinera performed an in-service, non-traffic-impacting upgrade from C-band to combined C-band plus L-band as part of the capacity expansion process. With Infinera’s ICE6 and Corning’s optical fiber, Telstra InfraCo achieved 61.3 Tbps total capacity with 6.2 milliseconds latency across the combined C-band and L-band, with wavelengths up to 700 Gbps.

“Based on these results, Telstra InfraCo’s express network and overall intercity fiber build will lead the world in scale, low latency, and high data transmission performance rate,” said Kathryn Jones, Fiber Executive at Telstra InfraCo. “The simulation exceeds our expectations, offering almost seven times today’s typical capacity of 8.8 Tbps per fibre pair and validates our selection of Corning’s SMF-28 ULL fiber in the cable design. Mitsubishi Electric invests in Elephantech for metal inkjet printing for PCBs

Mitsubishi Electric has invested in Elephantech, a start-up using metal inkjet printing to mass produce printed circuit boards.

Elephantech, which is based in Tokyo, uses its metal inkjet printing and copper plating technologies to manufacture and sell its P-Flex flexible printed circuit boards (PCB). The company says its "Pure Additive" manufacturing technology has a lower environmental impact than conventional manufacturing methods. 

The conventional method is a subtractive method in which copper foil is first laminated entirely on the substrate and then removed where unnecessary to form a circuit. This method however requires a large amount of water. In contrast, Elephantech’s metal inkjet printing technology allows metal to be printed on a substrate only where necessary.

Qualcomm to acquire Autotalks for V2X chips

Qualcomm agreed to acquire Autotalks, a start-up based to Israel developing vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication technologies. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Autotalks is a fabless semiconductor company that has been dedicated to V2X communications since 2009. The company provides automotive qualified dual-mode global V2X solutions compatible with multiple V2X standards that are designed to reduce collisions and improve mobility. 

Qualcomm said it intends to integrate Autotalks standalone safety into its own Snapdragon portfolio.

ADTRAN posts Q1 sales of $324M

ADTRAN reported first quarter revenue of $323.9 million. Net loss inclusive of the non-controlling interest for the first quarter of 2023 was $40.5 million. Net loss attributable to the company for the first quarter of 2023 was $34.5 million and diluted loss per share attributable to the company was $0.44.

Padtec's powers DWDM network along the bed of the Amazon

Padtec is supplying its DWDM equipment for a high-capacity network that runs along the bed of the Amazon river in the north of Brazil. 

In the first phase of Norte Conectado, a program operated by a consortium of telecommunications companies under Brazil's Ministry of Communications (MCom), Alloha Fibra, the largest independent optical fiber operator in Brazil and the third-largest fiber company in the country, will deploy Padtec’s DWDM solution to increase the transmission capacity of the longest section of the sub-river network.

Over 300 kilometers long, this segment connects Macapá, the capital of Amapá state, to the city of Almerim in Pará state, via the bed of the Amazon River. Padtec’s 800 Gbps transponder enables a record transmission capacity of 250 Gbps per optical channel in this section of the network. 

“Before this, the maximum rate achieved was 200 Gbps per optical channel. With this increase of 50 Gb/s, we brought high-capacity connectivity to more than 22,000 end customers, contributing to the digital and social inclusion of this location,” says Rubens Costa, Network Manager at Wire. “In addition to the technical expertise to develop solutions that meet the networks demands, Padtec’s technical support is an important differentiator for us. Cisco allows customers to defer payments till 2024

Cisco announced a program that will allow customers purchasing products or solutions before July 29, 2023, to defer all payments until 2024. All Cisco solutions are eligible for this new Cisco Capital Business Acceleration Program, including hardware, software, and services, as well as select partner services and third-party hardware. To complement the initiative, the Cisco Refresh portfolio of Cisco certified remanufactured products is also eligible for the Cisco Capital Business Acceleration Program, helping organizations acquire competitively priced and ready-to-ship hardware.

Cisco said payments deferred until 2024 would be based on the total amount financed and contract terms.

Western Digital provides update on hacking incident

On March 26, 2023, Western Digital was hit by a network security incident where an unauthorized third party gained access to a number of the company’s systems. The company's My Cloud service, which has been offline since April 2, was restored as of April 13.


Western Digital confirmed that an unauthorized party obtained a copy of a Western Digital database used for its online store that contained some personal information of its online store customers. This information included customer names, billing and shipping addresses, email addresses and telephone numbers. In addition, the database contained, in encrypted format, hashed and salted passwords and partial credit card numbers. We will communicate directly with impacted customers.

Western Digital also noted:

  • The majority of  impacted systems and services are now operational. 
  • Western Digital factories are and have been operational throughout this incident and the company is shipping products. 
  • Following the breach, certain other information about the company has been made public. Wester Digital investigating the validity of this data and will continue reporting findings as appropriate.
  • Regarding reports of the potential to fraudulently use digital signing technology allegedly attributed to Western Digital in consumer products, the company can confirm that it has control over its digital certificate infrastructure.

Orange Jordan picks Nokia for RAN

Orange Jordan selected Nokia to supply 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) equipment throughout the Kingdom of Jordan.

Nokia will supply 5G RAN equipment from its  AirScale portfolio powered by its ReefShark System on Chip (SoC) technology to replace Orange Jordan’s entire existing RAN network. Orange Jordan aims to provide 5G services to 50 percent of the population within four years followed by five percent year-on-year growth.

The deal includes the latest generation massive MIMO radios with support for high RF bandwidth as well as AirScale Baseband and Dual-band Remote Radio Head (RRH) products. In addition, Nokia will supply its Single RAN solution that enables one base station to run 5G, 4G, 3G, and 2G technologies simultaneously, helping Orange Jordan achieve more efficient site solutions across their network.

Canada's Eastlink extends 5G rollout with Ericsson

Eastlink, a Canadian service provider based in Nova Scotia, extended its 10-year supply partnership with Ericsson.

Ericsson will begin to supply 3500MHz mid-band radios and enhanced core network support for voice and data. Eastlink launched its 5G network powered by Ericsson technology in March 2022, with the activation of its first sites in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The two companies have since been working together to build robust 5G infrastructure that will help transform industries and dramatically enhance day-to-day experiences for its customers. As part of this newly expanded partnership, the companies will activate Eastlink’s 3500MHz spectrum, which will further enhance coverage, lower latency and deliver even faster speeds.

ESnet activates 100 Gbps links to CENIC and Pacific Wave

The Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) has activated 100 Gbps connections in Los Angeles to the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives (CENIC) as well as to the Pacific Wave international distributed peering facility for research and education (R&E) networks.

CENIC says these two 100 Gbps peering connections now function alongside ESnet’s existing 100 Gbps connections to Pacific Wave in Sunnyvale, CA and Seattle, WA. 

“The new peering with CENIC and Pacific Wave enables science researchers to have improved performance to Department of Energy user facilities, datasets, and collaborators. Together with CENIC, we are excited to provide this high-speed access to benefit California’s research and education community as well as science collaborators in Asia and on the west coast who are connected by Pacific Wave,” said Inder Monga, Executive Director of ESnet.


The new peering links will also benefit the Global Network Advancement Group (GNA-G)—a community of network professionals from national R&E networking (NREN) organizations all over the world.

Adtran launches 10G symmetric XGS-PON ONTs

Adtran introduced a new generation of 10G symmetric XGS-PON optical network terminals (ONTs) for residential and business customers.

The new SDX 630 Series ONTs support speeds up to 10 Gbps and feature zero-touch service provisioning capabilities. The ONTs can be coupled with Adtran service delivery gateways (SDGs) to meet the demand of current and future Wi-Fi standards and enable seamless integration with Adtran’s intelligent Mosaic One management system for enhanced control and monitoring.

The ONTs offer advanced operational monitoring features, such as Y.1731, continuity check and ONT-generated multigigabit speed tests. With 10GbE and 2.5GbE LAN interfaces, integrated voice ports, as well as outdoor ONT variants, service providers can offer any flavor of multigigabit service. 

Adtran is also introducing an XGS-PON SFP+ ONT in a small form factor pluggable package.
