Fujitsu to Build Open, Wholesale FTTH Network in UK

Fujitsu UK announced plans to build an open access, wholesale FTTH network serving 5 million homes in rural Britain. The network would be an alternative to BT Openreach but use the company's existing underground ducts and telegraph poles. The FTTH network would use Cisco gear.

Fujitsu said some of the funding for this project could come from the £530 million earmarked by the UK Government to drive investment in superfast broadband in rural communities.

Virgin Media and TalkTalk have each confirmed their intention to buy wholesale access via this network to deliver services in remote parts of the UK. The network will also be open to other service providers on wholesale terms.

Virgin Media's CEO, Neil Berkett, said: "Virgin Media's involvement in this ground breaking project is part of our on-going drive to rapidly create a step change in the UK's digital evolution. Fujitsu's vision and global expertise provides an opportunity to change the game in terms of broadband provision in parts of the UK that are otherwise being left behind. We now have a once in a lifetime opportunity to make the ambition of a digitally-enabled society a reality beyond the country's cities and towns."http://www.fujitsu.com/uk/news/pr/fs_20110413.html

Infonetics: IP/Ethernet at 89% of all Mobile Backhaul Spending

The mobile backhaul equipment market grew 10.3% in 2010 over the previous year, to $6.84 billion worldwide,
according to a recently released Mobile Backhaul Equipment and Services market share and forecast report from Infonetics Research.

Infonetics cites the addition of almost 1.5 billion mobile subscribers and 1.6 billion mobile broadband subscribers between 2011 and 2015 as the key driver. This growth will require more base stations, more cell site connections, higher backhaul capacities, and equipment for each cell site connection.

Infonetics also finds that Ericsson increased its lead in mobile backhaul microwave radio equipment revenue share, posting its best quarter in at least 2 years. As of the second half of 2010, Alcatel-Lucent, Tellabs, Cisco, and Huawei together own over 3/4 of the fast-growing Ethernet cell site routers and gateways segment.

"As operators refresh their 2G networks and transition to 3G, they almost universally adopt IP/Ethernet as the mobile backhaul solution to lower the costs of growing mobile data traffic, using IP as the base technology for 3G, LTE, and WiMAX networks. And the momentum is growing: 89% of the money spent on mobile backhaul equipment in 2010 was for IP/Ethernet gear, with the fastest growth happening in Ethernet cell site routers and gateways and Ethernet packet microwave equipment," explains Michael Howard, principal analyst and co-founder of Infonetics Research.

Motorola and Huawei End Legal Tussle

Motorola Solutions and Huawei Technologies agreed tp settle all pending litigation.

Motorola Solutions has agreed to withdraw its claims and dismiss, with prejudice, Huawei as a defendant in the Motorola v. Lemko, et al. litigation pending in the Chicago federal district court.

For its part, Huawei has agreed to withdraw its claims and dismiss, with prejudice, its lawsuit against Motorola Solutions and Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) in the Chicago federal district court. This allows Motorola Solutions to transfer its commercial agreements with Huawei to NSN for a fee, and allows NSN to receive and use Huawei confidential information to service the networks Motorola deployed worldwide using Huawei's products and technologies.

The companies noted that under a ten year partnership begun in 2000, Motorola resold certain Huawei products under the Motorola name. Over the next ten years, Motorola purchased $880 million in technology from Huawei that covered core networks and radio access networks.

"We regret that these disputes have occurred between our two companies. Motorola Solutions values the long-standing relationship we have had with Huawei. After reviewing the facts, we decided to resolve these matters and return to our traditional relationship of confidence and trust. I am pleased that we can again focus on having a cooperative and productive relationship," said Greg Brown, President & CEO of Motorola Solutions.

"With the resolution of these cases, and the misunderstandings put to rest, Huawei is pleased to move forward with its efforts to provide innovative solutions to its customers," said Guo Ping, Vice Chairman of the Board and Executive Vice President of Huawei.

Telefónica Forecasts 1-4% Annual Growth for 2010-2013

At its annual shareholder meeting, Telefónica predicted that it will outperform its major international competitors in subscriber and financial metrics as it grows at an annual pace of between 1% to 4%. This includes outpacing France Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, BT, Vodafone and AT&T in terms of organic revenue growth, largely due to Telefónica's operations in Latin America. Strategic alliances with China Unicom and Telecom Italia are also predicted to be drivers of new growth in the years ahead.

Some highlights from the first day of the event:

The total number of accesses (wired subscriber lines + mobile users) in all its markets is expected to rise from 287.6 million in 2010 to 340 million users by 2013.

Telefónica expects Latin America will grow faster than other regions.

The main pillars of growth will be mobile broadband (expected growth of 30-35%), fixed broadband (expected growth of 4-7%), Apps & OTT (expected growth of 20%), Capturing the remaining mobile and fixed voice opportunities (access and voice revenues expected to decline 1-3%).

Mobile broadband penetration was about 10% at the end of 2010 and is expected to reach about 30% by the end of 2013.

For fixed broadband, Telefónica will continue "massive" deployment of ADSL (under 25 Mbps) across the majority of its footprint, and selective deployment of ultra-broadband (over 25 Mbps) in selective regions.

The Group's overall efficiency continues to improves. As measured by OPEX+CAPEX / Number of Accesses, efficiency improved by 8% from 2008 to 2010.

CAPEX will reach a cumulative 27 billion euros cumulatively over the 2011-2013 period.

The company aims to keep OPEX+CAPEX / Revenues at about 4%.

The company's integrated backbone capacity increased 2.2X from 2008 to 2010.

More than 50% of the company's mobile data traffic is video already.

Telefónica believes in tiered pricing for mobile data traffic, but will take steps to increase usage of mobile data, new services and applications. The tiered pricing may be specific service tariffs for applications (email, chat, social networking), buckets of MB or GB, speeds such as 2/7/14 Mbps, or time of day (MB used are divided in half during off peak hours). Tiered pricing is already being put in place in each market.

Telefónica is looking at both NFC and CDN mobile services.

By 2013, Telefónica expects to deploy a CDN spanning 35 countries.

The number of online payments that the company gets from its subscribers increased by 5X from 2008 to 2010.

The company bolstered its shareholder remuneration policy, confirming a payout of €1.75 per share in 2012 and a minimum annual dividend of €1.75 per share from 2012.

Telefónica expects an OIBDA margin at the upper 30s range, with limited erosion from 2010.

http://www.telefonica.com http://www.telefonica.com/ext/investor_conference/en/agenda_presentations.shtml
  • In February 2011, Telefónica announced that its global revenues grew 7.1% in 2010 to 60,737 million euros (+9.9% in 4Q), driven by Latin America (+13.3%) and Europe (+12.7%) and the growing contribution of its mobile data business (close to 9,300 million euros, +19.3% year-on-year organic growth). The number of access lines (mobile and fixed) also grew by 7.2% and the company now has 287.6 million accesses worldwide. In 2010, the Company registered organic net adds of 19.2 million accesses. In Spain, despite the fierce competitive environment, net adds in the last year were six times the gains registered in 2009 in comparable terms.

Mobile accesses at the Telefónica Group stood at 220.2 million at the end of 2010, a year-on-year growth of 8.9% (both in organic and reported terms). Organic net additions reached 18.2 million in 2010 (1.3 times those recorded in 2009).

"We are making key, targeted moves as we align operations in support of our network-centric platform strategy," said John Chambers, Cisco chairman and CEO. "As we move forward, our consumer efforts will focus on how we help our enterprise and service provider customers optimize and expand their offerings for consumers, and help ensure the network's ability to deliver on those offerings."http://www.cisco.com
  • In March 2009, Cisco agreed to pay $590 million in stock in exchange for all shares of Pure Digital Technologies, a San Francisco-based company behind the Flip Video consumer camcorder. At the time, Cisco said its strategy behind the acquisition was to build in the media-enabled home and "to capture the consumer market transition to visual networking."

IEEE Ratifies 40G Ethernet Optical Standard

The 40Gb/s Ethernet Single-mode fiber optical interface standard, IEEE 802.3bg-2011, has been ratified by the IEEE. The new standard enables 40 Gb/s serial Ethernet interfaces to be deployed on single-mode fiber. It is an amendment to the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standard. The new standardized interface, called 40GBASE-FR, supports transmission up to 2km over single-mode fiber and can enable equipment to be configurable to interoperate with installed base of equipment conforming to existing telecom and ITU standards such as OC-768, OTU3, STM-256 or 40G Packet-over-SONET (POS).

The new standard builds upon last year's release of the IEEE 802.3ba-2010, IEEE's 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s Ethernet standard.

The IEEE said this new 40GBASE-FR interface was a specific need identified by the telecom carrier network operators as a key factor in their ability to seamlessly transition from installed equipment to new equipment supporting 40 Gb/s Ethernet.

"The telecom carrier community is very keen to adopt Ethernet technologies but also needs to leverage its significant installed base of OTN, SONET, SDH or POS equipment. Once the need was determined, the IEEE was able to quickly gather forces and develop a standard to meet the technical requirements as well as the schedule needs of the user community," said Mark Nowell, Chair, IEEE 802.3bg Task Force, Senior Director Engineering, SP Routing Technology Group, Cisco. "The excellent cooperation between the IEEE and ITU standards bodies and members enabled us to develop and complete this IEEE Ethernet specification in record time for an optical interface. Completing in only 16 months from the original Call for Interest and 12 months from the project approval enables the industry to quickly respond to the growing need for Ethernet adoption in the carrier networks."http://www.ieee.org/http://standards.ieee.org

AT&T Employs Cotendo for Content Acceleration Service

AT&T is leveraging Cotendo's newly announced "Cloudlet" capabilities in its AT&T Content Acceleration suite for the faster delivery of dynamic content, such as social media and shopping cart data.

Specifically, AT&T is teaming with Cotendo to add their Search Engine Optimization and Cloudlet offerings to the AT&T Content Acceleration suite. This will push the business logic of dynamically generated web pages into the content acceleration cloud.

AccuWeather, which provides up to the minute weather reporting, is using the Cloudlet module of the AT&T Content Acceleration service to improve response times without buying and maintaining additional servers. Previously, users with GPS-enabled smartphones were tying up AccuWeather's whole network with very specific requests for weather data. AT&T said that with the addition of the Cloudlet module, requests for updated weather information can now be made within a larger local geographic area, eliminating the need to travel back to headquarters for the latest forecast. As a result, update requests to headquarters have declined by 75 percent, and AccuWeather is now providing near real-time response important to its users.

The Cloudlet module can make decisions on features such as geography, devices, and request routing. By teaming with Cotendo, AT&T is deploying this new Content Acceleration feature which enables new classes of capabilities, and applications to be delivered globally and controlled in real-time.

AT&T Content Acceleration also includes a monitoring service that offers detailed reporting and alerts for most major search engines. This technology helps business to access detailed information on potential troubles, and address them before they occur. The Search Engine Analytics module from Cotendo delivers crucial web site information, so issues that could impact a site's search engine visibility and rankings, and by extension its traffic and profitability can be pinpointed and corrected. Using this module allows the web sites to function with fewer glitches and faster content. Businesses using the AT&T Content Acceleration Search Engine Analytics module experience more clicks and higher conversion rate. As a result, customers have better experiences, which can increase loyalty to the site.

"The ability to deliver localized information that our customers need while not flooding our entire infrastructure was paramount to providing consumers with real-time access to weather-related news and updates," said Jon Porter, engineer and member of AccuWeather enterprise architecture team. "With the Cloudlet module of AT&T Content Acceleration service, our transaction times have improved, without forcing our company to buy and maintain more servers."

"Businesses are seeing an increasing need to deliver richer and more dynamic content to web customers," said Sam Farraj, Assistant Vice President of AT&T Digital Media Solutions. "Simultaneously, their customers are showing little or no tolerance for waiting to see that content delivered. By delivering content quickly and more targeted via the AT&T network, AT&T Content Acceleration is the perfect bridge between a company and its customers," he said.
