OpVista Enhances Carrier Ethernet Transport Solution

OpVista introduced an "EtherWave" Carrier Ethernet Transport solution for aggregating Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) traffic streams with 10 GbE handoff on metro and regional backbone networks. The solution consists of the OpVista2000 TR-110 GbE "muxponder" and the TR-71 10GbE transponder and incorporating Layer 2 functionality. It works by combining 10 GbE "client side" signals into one 10-G ITU-compliant DWDM wavelength on the "network side." OpVista can then handoff a 10GbE signal to a router located in a central office or hub node facility, with the individual GbE streams tagged separately to allow distribution to the appropriate service. This cost-effective aggregation and segregation eliminates the need for an edge router.



OpVista's EtherWave is generally available and shipping to customers in July 2007.

Linux Phone Standards (LiPS) Forum Releases First Specs

The Linux Phone Standards (LiPS) Forum published the first set of specifications in LiPS Release 1.0, whose complete delivery is planned by the end of 2007. In addition LiPS unveiled a roadmap of additional specification areas to be developed through 2008.



The specifications published include the following: LiPS Reference Model, Address Book and Voice Call Enabler, and User Interface Services (Widget sets, Key Navigation and Text Input Method APIs-- based on GTK).



Before the end of 2007, the LiPS Forum will finalize the remaining elements of LiPS Release 1.0 by adding specifications relating to Telephony, Messaging, Calendar, IM, Presence and additional User Interface Services API specifications.



Planned for release in 2008 are the Application Framework, Services APIs (e.g., based on IMS), Device Management APIs (based on OMA DM), and additional Enabler APIs (e.g., for multimedia).



The Forum said its emerging LiPS standards will benefit the Linux-based mobile industry, especially in terms of reducing fragmentation, by informing and aligning OEMs, ISVs, operators and other consortia and standards bodies.

Ericsson Acquires Drutt for Mobile Service Delivery Platform

Ericsson agreed to acquire Sweden-based Drutt Corporation for an undisclosed sum. Drutt supplies a Mobile Service Delivery Platform (MSDP) that helps operators mobilize and charge for any content to any kind of mobile device, over any mobile network and delivery channel. Drutt claims deployments in more than 60 telecom operators in 35 countries, managing millions of transactions every day.



Drutt Corporation has subsidiaries in Sweden, China, Canada and Mexico and is owned by Provider Venture Partners Funds, TeliaSonera and certain employees. The company employs about 85 people and more than 90 percent of the employees reside in Sweden, where the global operations are located.

Asia Netcom to Extend via New Cable Landing Station in Qingdao

Asia Netcom will extend its undersea cable network via a Cable Landing Station operated by China Netcom in the northern Chinese city of Qingdao. This will provide seamlessly connectivity to China Netcom's national fiber infrastructure.



EAC-Qingdao link will initially feature 80Gbps of capacity, and is upgradeable incrementally to 2.56 Tbps.



Qingdao's proximity to key northern Chinese cities will reduce the distance by more than half between major commercial centers, such as Shanghai and Beijing, and the key North Asian markets of Japan and Korea as well as the U.S. Network latency will be reduced by up to 40% compared to existing routes to those locations through EAC's Hong Kong landing point.

• In January 2007, Asia Netcom announced plans to add a new trans-Pacific portion to its regional submarine cable system, EAC. The new 23,500 km cable, which is expected to be completed by July 2008, consists of a northern route connecting Japan to the US, and a southern route linking the Philippines to the US via Guam and Hawaii. EAC Pacific will also include a subsea link between the Philippines directly with Japan, which will close the ring design and integrate the trans-Pacific infrastructure with the current system. Telecom New Zealand Selects Alcatel-Lucent for W-CDMA

Telecom New Zealand selected Alcatel-Lucent as its technology partner for the deployment of a new third-generation (3G) Wideband-CDMA (W-CDMA)/High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) network deployment. Subject to a suitable commercial arrangement being reached, Alcatel-Lucent will work with Telecom New Zealand as part of a EUR 168 million (NZ 300 million) mobile network investment plan.

Tele2 has selected Nokia Siemens Networks to build a new pan-European DWDM network capable of scaling support 40 Gbps wavelengths. Tele2's core transport network will be based on the SURPASS hiT 7300 optical platform. The SURPASS hiT 7300 integrates technology from Stratalight Communications to support the 40 Gbps rates per wavelength.

Infinera Soars in IPO, Raises $182 Million

Shares in Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN) rose 51% on their first day of trading to close at $19.70. The company had offered 14 million shares at an initial price of $13, raising $182 million for the company.



Infinera offers a unique optical transport system. Unlike conventional optical systems, which use analog optical devices for key networking functions, the Infinera DTN uses digital technology. Its photonic integrated circuits convert all traffic from optical to electronic signals, allowing the DTN to add and drop, multiplex, groom, and protect circuits digitally rather than optically.



Infinera developed a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) that incorporates 100 Gbps of transmit and receive capacity and the functionality of more than 60 discrete optical components into a pair of indium phosphide chips..

ARRIS Supplies CMTS for Scandinavia's Canal Digital

Canal Digital, which delivers digital channels and IP services to over 2.9 million Scandinavian households, has selected the ARRIS C4 CMTS platform to deliver broadband Internet and VoIP service to its customer base in Denmark.



Canal Digital is planning to implement wideband DOCSIS service based on the ARRIS FlexPath technology, using the ARRIS C4 CMTS and ARRIS Touchstone Wideband Modem WBM650.



Canal Digital was founded as a joint venture between French pay-TV provider CANAL+ and Norwegian national telecoms operator Telenor. Since 2003, it has been wholly owned and operated by Telenor.

Level 3 Selected for Pennsylvania's "Wall Street West"

Level 3 Communications was selected to be the exclusive network provider for Wall Street West, a Federal and Pennsylvania-funded initiative to provide back-up systems to New York City's financial institutions. Former Alcatel Exec Pleads Guilty in Costa Rica Bribery Case

Christian Sapsizian, a former Alcatel CIT executive, pleaded guilty to participating in the payment of more than $2.5 million in bribes to senior Costa Rican government officials in order to obtain a mobile telephone contract from Costa Rica's state-owned telecommunications authority. Sapsizian entered the plea in U.S. District Court in Miami.



Sapsizian was employed by Alcatel or one of its subsidiaries for more than 20 years. At the time the corrupt payments were made, Sapsizian was the company's deputy vice president responsible for Costa Rica.



Sapsizian admitted that from February 2000 through September 2004, he conspired with co-defendant Edgar Valverde Acosta, a Costa Rican citizen who was Alcatel's senior country Officer in Costa Rica, and others to pay more than $2.5 million in bribes to senior Costa Rican officials in order to obtain a mobile telephone contract on behalf of Alcatel. The payments, funneled through one of Alcatel's Costa Rican consulting firms, were made to a director of Instituto Costarrisence de Electricidad (ICE), the state-owned telecommunications authority in Costa Rica, which was responsible for awarding all telecommunications contracts.



Sapsizian faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and $330,000 in forfeiture.

Ericsson to Supply HSPA-enabled 3G Net in Argentina

Argentina's Personal selected Ericsson to build an HSPA-enabled 3G network while expanding and modernizing its existing network with a Mobile Softswitch solution. Under the agreement, Ericsson will provide new 3G/HSPA core and radio networks, including the Mobile Softswitch. Ericsson will also be the prime-integrator for the network and will provide business consulting services.



Ericsson's HSPA solution enables top download speeds of up to 14.4Mbps and upload speeds of 1.4Mbps. Ericsson said the technology lets operators more than double their system capacity and cut response times for interactive services. On average, users will be able to download 20 times faster than with a GSM/GPRS connection. Future evolution steps will increase the HSPA download speed to 42 Mbps and the upload speed to 12 Mbps. Ericsson offers HSPA support on many frequency bands ranging from 850MHz to 2.6GHz.

DIRECTV, the largest satellite television service provider with over 16 million subscribers, opened its new Denver Operations hub. The new facility will create up to 1,000 new jobs and will be the nerve center for DIRECTV's sales and service support operations.
