"3G For All" Programme Targets Cheaper Handsets

The GSM Association (GSMA) launched a "3G for all" initiative to establish a core set of common requirements for 3G handsets in order to create the economies of scale that will allow mobile phone suppliers to rapidly bring down end-user costs. Mobile phone suppliers are being encouraged to compete to design a 3G handset that meets the operators' common requirements. The GSMA will then endorse the winning handset, which will be widely deployed by operators participating in the initiative. Further details will be announced in October.



The "3G for all" initiative builds on the GSMA's Emerging Market Handset (EMH) programme, which has hit its goal to reduce the wholesale price of entry-level GSM handsets to less than $30 -- sparking the creation of a new segment of ultra-low cost phones. Motorola, the winning vendor in the EMH programme, expects to ship more than 20 million EMH handsets from launch in 2005 through to end of 2006. The EMH programme has helped bring the wholesale cost of GSM handsets in India down by more than 25% since last year, fuelling the growing use of mobile communications in rural areas.



Despite the fall in handset prices, the GSMA estimates that about a billion people worldwide won't be able to afford their own handset for the foreseeable future. Through its Development Fund, the GSMA is looking at how to extend the many benefits of mobile communications to these people. The Development Fund is financing a series of pilot projects in Africa and Asia that enable local entrepreneurs to set up payphone businesses or Internet cafes where people can access the Internet, email or other data services.

OEN Announces IPTV Carriage Deal with Fox

Optical Entertainment Network (OEN), which is deploying an FTTH network in Houston, signed an IPTV carriage agreement directly with Fox Cable Networks to provide all of their content. Through this affiliate agreement, OEN's FISION will offer its subscribers FX, Fox Movie Channel, National Geographic Channel, Fox Reality, FUEL TV, Fox Soccer Channel, SPEED, Fox Sports en Español, Fox College Sports and regional sports network FSN Southwest.



OEN said it plans to deliver 400 television channels, including over 50 channels of HDTV.

Nextlink and Covad Target Broadband Wireless Access

Nextlink Wireless, a subsidiary of XO Holdings and the largest holder of LMDS spectrum in the U.S., and Covad Communications have entered into a strategic partnership that will enable Covad to deploy wireless Ethernet services nationally using Nextlink's licensed 28-31 GHz Local Multipoint Distribution System (LMDS) wireless spectrum.



Covad will be able to provide access speeds up to 25 Mbps per subscriber location, with low latency for real-time applications, such as VoIP.



Initially, Covad will offer enhanced broadband wireless service within its existing network in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The agreement also allows for an expansion to eleven additional major markets across the country, including Chicago, Dallas, Miami, New York, Seattle, and Washington, DC.

CoreLabs Uncovers VoIP Security Vulnerabilities

CoreLabs, the research center of Core Security Technologies, published two advisories regarding vulnerabilities that could severely impact enterprise phone systems. By exploiting either of these buffer overflow vulnerabilities, an attacker could remotely execute code and take control of an organization's entire voice communications system. These vulnerabilities could also serve as entry points for attackers to compromise other critical network systems. Specifically, the vulnerabilities affect:

  • Asterisk PBX, the open source software for phone systems. The Asterisk-specific IAX2 protocol includes support for transmission of video between the IAX2 clients that implement this feature. A vulnerability found in the Asterisk's handling of IAX2 video frames could lead to the remote compromise of the system running the software PBX through execution of arbitrary code of the attacker's choosing with the privileges of the Asterisk daemon. The vulnerability affects Asterisk PBX software versions up to and including v1.2.8.


  • IAXclient, an open source library that implements the IAX2 VoIP protocol used by several VoIP software phones. Two vulnerabilities have been discovered in the library that may grant attackers remote execution of arbitrary code on systems using software packages that rely on the library to implement the IAX protocol support. Although these vulnerabilities were discovered and tested using in the IDE FISK software phone, other software packages that use the IAXclient library are also vulnerable.


The maintainers of the vulnerable software have updated their packages with fixed versions.

Spirent Adds to its Avalanche Load Testing Line

Spirent Communications announced a number of enhancements to its "Avalanche" Load Testing Appliances line. These include:

  • the Avalanche 2700, a rack-mountable test appliance capable of generating nearly 100,000 HTTP requests per second, 1.7 million concurrent connections and up to 3.8Gbps of traffic to simulate extremely high volumes of network and user traffic.


  • the Avalanche 7.5 load testing software, which adds enhancements to generate realistic network and user behavior for IPSec and IPv6.


  • the Avalanche Starter Kit, an appliance aimed at providing workgroups with an economical way to load test. It provides the ability to simulate up to 50 concurrent users or 500 concurrent TCP connections.

Raza Acquires AMD's "Alchemy" MIPS-based Processors

Raza Microelectronics (RMI), a start-up specializing in high-performance silicon for networking platforms, will acquire AMD's MIPS-based "Alchemy" processor product line. At the same time, AMD will become an investor in RMI. Financial terms were not disclosed.



The Alchemy product family from AMD consists of a portfolio of processors that are designed to address customer needs for high-performance, low-power embedded solutions. The technologies offered in the Alchemy processor line cover a wide range of applications targeted at multimedia, access and computing devices as well as growth opportunities in the communications and consumer markets.



The companies said the deal was part of a broad strategic agreement to cooperate in a number of different areas, including the recently announced "Torrenza" platform.



AMD's "Torrenza" is an open, x86 platform that leverages the Direct Connect Architecture and HyperTransport capabilities of the AMD64 architecture to enable other processor and hardware providers to innovate within a common ecosystem. AMD hopes "Torrenza" will enable a global innovation community to develop and deploy application-specific co-processors to work alongside AMD processors in multi-socket systems. The first phase of "Torrenza" enabled partner silicon chipsets. The next phase will entail licensing of coherent HyperTransport to members of a global ecosystem.

  • In April 2006, Raza Microelectronics, a start-up based in Cupertino, California, closed a $20 million round of financing to support is work in high-performance silicon for packet processing applications. The company's XLR and Orion processor families are complex, highly-integrated designs incorporating hundreds of millions of transistors and built on leading-edge TSMC silicon process technologies.


  • li>RMI's XLR Thread Processor, which incorporates 333 million transistors on 90nm CMOS technology, is a general purpose processor designed for network appliances, such as advanced firewalls, IDS, VPN boxes, intelligent switches and other edge applications. Significantly, the chip incorporates 8 MIPS64 CPU cores at up to 1.5GHz, each with 4 threads. This enables a single device to run 32 simultaneous instances of Linux. To support its high-performance threaded architecture, the XLR processor incorporates large Level-2 caches, full speed high throughput interconnects, networking accelerators, security acceleration and an interchip messaging complex. RMI said it is able to run 32-way Linux on the device.

  • RMI's Orion Intelligent Access Processor, which utilizes 180 million transistors on 130nm CMOS technology, is positioned as a "line-card on a chip." The integrated Orion chip is designed to serve as a Packet Processor Engine, a Traffic Management Engine, and a SONET/SDH Processor Engine. By combining Ethernet/MPLS/VPLS packet processing with next-gen SONET/SDH capabilities, the device could be used in range of network aggregation platforms, including customer-located equipment (CLEs or pizza boxes), micro-MSPPs, and Ethernet/MPLS line cards in IP DSLAMs. The design leverages Ethernet as a universal client interface while providing simultaneous support for legacy T1/E1 or T3/E3 delivered services.


  • Raza Microelectronics was founded by Atiq Raza, who is also the founder, chairman and CEO of Foundries Holdings, Inc. (formerly Raza Foundries). Previously, Mr. Raza was President and COO of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). At AMD, Raza oversaw the development of AMD's processor roadmap and brought the AMD-K6 and Athlon family of processor products to the market. Before that, he headed NexGen, which was acquired by AMD in January 1996.


  • In August 2003, Raza Microelectronics acquired SandCraft, which designed high-performance MIPS64 microprocessors for the communications, network storage and office automation markets.

Japanese University Selects Force10

The University of Electro-Communications (UEC), Japan's national science and technology school, is upgrading its campus network to 10 Gigabit Ethernet with Force10 Networks' TeraScale E-Series family of switch/routers. The Force10 TeraScale E300 anchors and interconnects networks in both the east and west sides of the campus with the Science Information Network (SINET) from the National Institute of Informatics.

Aktino Enters Supply Agreement with EMBARQ

Atkino, a supplier of long-reach broadband over copper access solutions , announced a multi-year agreement with EMBARQ Logistics, the deployment, distribution, and logistics division of Embarq.



The agreement covers Aktino's AK3000 and AK4000 platforms. The AK3000 provides long-reach DS3 (45 Mbps) bandwidth, while the AK4000 enables 5 to 50 Mbps business-class Ethernet services over copper. Both platforms leverage Aktino's MIMO over DMT (Multiple Input, Multiple Output over Discrete Multi-Tone) technology, which reduces crosstalk among copper pairs.

QUALCOMM Increases Financial Guidance

Citing vibrant consumer demand for 3G devices, QUALCOMM increased its financial guidance. The company now anticipates third fiscal quarter QUALCOMM pro forma revenues to be approximately $1.91 to $1.96 billion, with EPS to be approximately $0.41 to $0.42, compared to $0.28 in the year ago quarter.



This estimate is based on the shipment of approximately 55 million Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chips during the quarter compared to approximately 36 million in the year ago quarter and approximately 49 million in the prior quarter.



QUALCOMM expects third fiscal quarter pro forma revenues to be at or slightly above the high end of prior guidance of $1.77 to $1.87 billion.

Verizon Signs NY Yankees and NJ Nets for FiOS

Verizon announced a multiyear deal with the YES Network to add the New York Yankees and New Jersey Nets to the FiOS TV lineup.



YES is now available to subscribers of FiOS TV Premier, Verizon's most popular package, on Channel 65.

Motorola Signs David Beckham as Global Brand Ambassador

Motorola signed David Beckham to serve as its global brand ambassador. The three-year collaboration with David Beckham will kick-off with major activities across Asia including advertising appearances and extensive retail promotions.



The deal also includes the ability to embed exclusive Beckham content -- such as screen savers and video clips of the star in action -- in Motorola handsets. Financial terms were not disclosed.

GSM Reaches Two Billion Subscriber Milestone

There are now two billion subscribers worldwide for the GSM family of technologies-GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS and HSDPA, according to 3G Americas and Informa Telecoms & Media. Globally, there are 2.29 billion cellular users encompassing all technologies, placing GSM as the dominant market leader.



Some highlights:

  • It took approximately twelve years to reach the first one billion GSM subscriptions (1192-2004), but only two and a half years to hit the next billion GSM/UMTS subscriptions


  • Latin America and the Caribbean led the world market percentage growth rate for GSM, adding more than 74 million new customers in the one year period from March 2005 to March 2006 -- nearly doubling their subscriber base with a growth rate of 97%.


  • The Middle East followed by Africa are the world regions with the next largest growth rates, respectively.


  • China continues to be the largest single market of GSM customers, with 662.6 million as of March 2006.


  • The trend of large CDMA and TDMA operators choosing to migrate their networks to the GSM family of technologies, with America Movil and Telefonica Moviles launching GSM networks in all their existing entities in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. Only two remaining Telefonica entities still have CDMA networks in operation. Additionally, in the past few years, both Telecom Italia (TIM) and Millicom International chose to migrate each of their five subsidiaries to a GSM network, as well as did numerous other operators, including Cable & Wireless throughout the Caribbean. In the U.S. and Canada, Cingular Wireless, T-Mobile USA and Rogers Wireless, as well as numerous rural and regional operators who have chosen GSM.


  • EDGE is commercially offered by 133 operators across 80 countries, including 31 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Worldwide, there are 81 additional EDGE networks planned or in deployment.


  • There are currently 105 UMTS networks in service across 50 countries, with 59 more networks planned or in deployment.


  • HSDPA, which is an enhanced version of UMTS for high speed mobile broadband, was launched first in the world by Cingular Wireless in December 2005. Now, five months later, HSDPA is commercially deployed in 32 networks and 67 additional operators have networks planned, in deployment, or in trial.

Canada's MTS Allstream Launches IP Trunking Service

MTS Allstream launched an MPLS-based IP Trunking service that enables enterprises to seamlessly interconnect their PBXs to the PSTN. IP Trunking uses a quality-of-service enabled IP connection between the PBX and MTS Allstream's MPLS network, replacing ISDN PRI (Primary Rate Interface) facilities. The service supports both SIP and H.323 protocols.



MTS Allstream is delivering the IP Trunking Service through its national IP/MPLS network, which leverages Cisco System's CRS-1 Carrier Routing System platform.

Verizon Boosts DSL to 7.1 Mbps for SMBs

Verizon Online has expanded its two highest-capacity business DSL packages to 16 more states in its territory. Verizon Business DSL offers customers maximum connection speeds of up to 7.1 Mbps downstream and 768 kbps (kilobits per second) upstream with a Dynamic IP address for $99.95 a month. In addition, business customers can order Verizon Business DSL with up to 7.1Mbps/768 kbps with a Static IP address for $199.95 a month. Business DSL requires a one-year contract.

Belgacom Builds Reconfigurable Optical Backbone with Siemens

Belgacom International Carrier Services is working with Siemens Communications to build a flexible optical backbone linking 16 of its European telecommunications nodes and enable Belgacom ICS to offer its customers transmission capacity up to n x 40 Gbps wavelengths.



Belgacom's PEN4FUTURE project relies on Siemens' Surpass hiT 7500 platform, an optical transport platform for regional and long-haul haul applications. The network uses ROADM technology (Reconfigurable Optical Add & Drop Multiplexer), enabling the carrier to significantly lower operational and investment costs compared with the previous DWDM generation technology. Moreover, the plug & play and fully tunable ultra-long haul transponders dramatically reduce the time to deploy.



Belgacom ICS's new optical backbone will link 16 network nodes in 7 European countries: Belgium, France, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, and at a later stage Italy. The deployment is phased from May to August 2006.

Juniper and NTT Test GMPLS over 40 Gbps Trunks

Juniper Networks together with NTT Communications successfully demonstrated Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching (GMPLS) signaling to dynamically establish a OC-768/STM-256 Layer 1 network path between NTT Communications' Makuhari and Othemachi Points of Presence (PoPs). The tests used Juniper's T640 core routers.



GMPLS extends the efficient label switching mechanism of MPLS to the physical network layer, providing a control plane that allows networks to take advantage of an advanced infrastructure, including high-speed links such as OC768c, which is fastest optical link available today. Using GMPLS, routers can intelligently signal the optical layer, enabling providers to establish, change or tear down optical links in real time.



Juniper said its T640 platform was the only router in the trial that could perform the high speed connection via a logical router exchanging the IPv4 and IPv6 traffic with a master physical router controlling a Layer 1 path with GMPLS signaling. http://www.juniper.net

Amstrad Selects Conexant for HDTV Satellite Set-Top Boxes

Amstrad PLC, a leading international manufacturer of digital STBs, selected Conexant Systems' DVB-S2/MPEG-4 satellite set-top box silicon
for their new high-definition television (HDTV) satellite receiver. Amstrad is using six Conexant chips in the box.



Amstrad's DRX700i STB is based exclusively on Conexant's semiconductor solutions, and will be deployed by Italian satellite broadcast operator Sky Italia this summer.

Akamai Targets New Services at Web 2.0 Technologies

Akamai Technologies introduced a new set of services aimed at business-to-consumer (B2C) Web sites that are integrating rich, collaborative Web 2.0-generated content and applications into their online architecture. Web 2.0 technologies include the use of dynamic software applications like AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) and Macromedia Flash, as well as Web Services.



Akamai's suite of Dynamic Site Solutions includes the following capabilities:

  • Dynamic Content Processing - Akamai processes dynamic content and business logic on Akamai servers, leading to increased infrastructure offload and faster Web site delivery.


  • Content Prefetching - Akamai requests and pre-loads dynamic content on Akamai servers before the user has started requesting the content, enabling B2C websites to more rapidly serve dynamically-generated pages.


  • Internet Route and Connection Optimization - Akamai's Internet path optimization technology is designed to automatically select the fastest path across the Internet between the Akamai server and the central infrastructure. Once an optimal route is selected, Akamai further optimizes this connection using a combination of protocol optimization, persistent connections, and compression, leading to improved Web site performance and a faster and more reliable end user experience.


  • Content Targeting -- Akamai identifies a visiting user's geographic location, connection speed, device type, or other specified information so that content can be targeted in real time based on the Web site owners' preference.


Akamai said its new Dynamic Site Solutions delivers performance that is nearly five times that of the original Web infrastructure, while avoiding the build-out of costly additional hardware that is often required to support the increased load brought on by richer, more dynamic content.
