Credo intros 112G Retimer DSP with 1.6 Tbps capacity

Credo introduced a 112G LR (Long Reach) DSP  with 1.6 Tbps of retiming capacity for supporting port speeds of 1.6T, 800G, 400G, 100G and down to 10G.

The new "Screaming Eagle" DSP is a third generation Credo 112G retimer and supports LR+ channels of 40dB+, enabling up to 1.6Tbps throughput in a single package. It adds a programmable MR (medium reach) mode to reduce SerDes power by 20% for C2M (chip-to-module) and VSR (very short reach) applications. Screaming Eagle 1.6T ships in a 23x23mm package, the industry’s smallest form factor for line card applications.

Saudi Arabia's stc forms a new infrastructure company

Saudi Arabia's stc Group launched Center3 Company, a new company that will be the owner of the digital infrastructure assets owned by stc Group, including data centers, submarine cables, international points of presence, and internet exchange points.

Center3 Company aims to be the digital regional center for the Middle East and North Africa, operating a group of carrier-neutral data centers and a provider of international communication for the telecommunications sector through a submarine fiber-optic network. It aims to develop digital businesses and enhance investment opportunities in international communication services and data centers by providing the latest communication, hosting technologies and raising the capacity of data centers to meet the needs of the Asian, European, and African markets, and the rest of the world.

The inauguration took place in the presence of H.R.H Prince Mohammad bin Khalid Al Abdullah Al-Faisal, Chairman of the Board of Directors of stc Group, His Excellency the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Eng. Abdullah Alswaha, and a number of excellencies and senior executives of stc Group.

stc plans high-capacity Red Sea cable

Orange outlines energy saving plan in France

Orange outlined the following energy to reduce electricity consumption in France:

  • During peak consumption, Orange will cut 5 to 10% of its instantaneous electricity consumption for one hour per day. Switching to electric battery for several thousand fixed network installations will help save up to 20 MW, i.e. the instantaneous consumption of a medium-sized city with 40,000 inhabitants. These energy efficiency measures will have no negative impact on users. 
  • The temperature in offices is now set at 19°C. On days when there are few visitors, Orange proposes closing some quieter work spaces to reduce their electricity and heating consumption.
  • Since September 1, 2022, window lighting at all Orange stores in France is switched off 30 minutes after closing at the latest.
  • During peak consumption, SMS will be sent to Orange employees and customers to raise awareness of environmentally-friendly actions, like switching off their boxes when not in use; switching to Wi-Fi at home, or enabling standby mode for their Livebox and TV set-top box. Extended standby mode on the Livebox 6 can reduce energy consumption by 95%.
  • As a signatory of the Ecowatt charter, Orange will also display an electricity status report on the Orange TV home page, allowing every TV viewer to see the amount of electricity available in France.

Christel Heydemann, Orange CEO, explains: “In an uncertain geopolitical and economic context, we share the French government's concerns and we have developed a concrete plan to support the national energy saving initiative. By offering to cut consumption at several thousand technical sites for one hour, we will reduce our instantaneous power requirements by up to 10%, without impacting the service offered to users. Qunnect raises $8M for quantum-secure networking

Qunnect, a start-up based in the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York City, announced its Series A financing of over $8 million for development of quantum-secure networking technology.

Spearheaded by CEO Dr. Noel Goddard and founders Dr. Mehdi Namazi and Mael Flament, Qunnect is developing quantum-secure networking technology designed for scalable deployment on existing telecom fiber infrastructure. 

Qunnect's products include an entangled photon source with compatibility to atomic-based devices and a high fidelity quantum memory, are key enablers for applications in quantum sensing and computing.  The company said the new funding will be used to further develop their product suite, scale manufacturing, and launch a multi-node R&D quantum network testbed to demonstrate entanglement distribution protocols. This network, connected to existing fiber optic cable in New York City, will be the first of its kind in the US.

Broadband Forum posts 5G Transport Architecture report

Broadband Forum has released its technical report 5G Transport Architecture and Requirements (TR-521), offering recommendations for architecture and equipment requirements to provide transport networks suitable for supporting 5G mobile radio access network (RAN).

“5G cannot perform without the support of well founded transport networks. These transport networks must be prepared to support the vast number of use cases and services that can be realized with 5G with features including higher capacity, enhanced performance, and high reliability,” said David Sinicrope, Broadband Forum’s Access and Transport Architecture (ATA) Work Area Director. “The publication of TR-521 provides a functional reference architecture, and equipment requirements for transport networks supporting 5G fronthaul and backhaul. It benefits both operators in specifying what is expected of the transport equipment they procure and transport equipment vendors in deciding what to implement and how it will be used.”

Broadband Forum has also released the specification, Mobile – Transport Network Slice Instance Management Interfaces (MMI) (TR-522) to address, as the name suggests, transport network slice management interfaces.

5G end-to-end slicing facilitates multiple logical self-contained networks on top of a common physical infrastructure platform. In realizing a 5G end-to-end slice, the 3GPP management system needs to be aligned with the corresponding transport network management to ensure that the desired performance, functionality and connectivity is fulfilled.

TR-522 addresses the interfaces between 3GPP Management System and the Transport Network Managers helping to provide this alignment. Specifically, the work defines interfaces to support the configuration, assurance, monitoring and reconfiguration of 5G network slices in 5G networks.

Both specifications, along with accompanying Market Reports (MR-521.1 and MR-522) which explain the motivation for the work, have been completed by Broadband Forum’s Mobile Transport and Routing Project Stream within the Access & Transport Architecture (ATA) Work Area. The Mobile Transport and Routing Project Stream is responsible for the Forum’s mobile transport and routing architectural work, including the control, management, and data planes. These architectures leverage new industry technology and practices, while protecting the investment in deployed networks.

Verizon lands $1.58B contract to update U.S. embassies

Verizon has been awarded a new Enterprise Infrastructure Solutions (EIS) contract to modernize the global communications infrastructure and provide IT services for each of the Department of State’s (DOS) U.S. embassies, consulars, and other key locations around the globe.

The contract, worth $1.58 billion over the next 10 years, includes implementation and management of network solutions for the Department’s non-domestic footprint, including Asia, Africa, the Middle East and South America. This includes technology and network infrastructure for embassies in nearly 260 locations across the globe.

ITU elects Doreen Bogdan-Martin as Secretary-General

Member states of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) have elected Doreen Bogdan-Martin of the United States to serve as the organization's next Secretary-General for a four year term. She replaces Houlin Zhao of China in the ITU's top leadership role. She will begin her term on 1 January 2023.

Bogdan-Martin will be the first woman to lead ITU, which was established in 1865 and became a United Nations specialized agency in 1947.

Ms Bogdan-Martin has held leadership positions in international telecommunications policy for over two decades, including the last three years as Director of the ITU's Telecommunications Development Bureau. In her candidate statements, said she would work to achieve "digital connectivity that is safe, inclusive, and affordable."

Taiwan's AIROHA ships XGS-PON chip

AIROHA, a subsidiary of Taiwan-based MediaTek,confirmed that is XGS-PON chips are now being used in customer premise equipment (CPE) by a U.S. broadband provider.

AIROHA says its XGS-PON ICs enable symmetric 8 Gbps upload and download speeds with 3ms low latency.

AIROHA has more than 1,100 staff coming from MediaTek's former IoT department and a number of IC design houses merged or purchased by MediaTek.

Micron to build megafab in New York

Micron will build a "megafab" in Clay, New York (near Syracuse) to produce lead-edge memory chips in high volume using the most advanced semiconductor manufacturing processes and tools, including extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography

Micron said it will invest $20 billion in the project by 2030 and up to $100 billion over the next 20-plus years. The company is looking to secure support from the recently-passed CHiPS legislation.

Micron’s central New York site could eventually include four 600,000 square foot cleanrooms, accounting for a total of 2.4 million square feet of cleanroom space – the size of approximately 40 U.S. football fields. Site preparation work will start in 2023 with construction beginning in 2024.

ADVA launches network security company

ADVA launched a specialist security company committed to protecting mission-critical communication networks from cyberattacks.

UK's Hyperoptic to deploy Nokia’s 800GE-capable routers

Hyperoptic, the UK’s largest exclusively full fiber internet service provider, will deploy Nokia’s 800GE-capable 7750 SR-s routers, which are powered by its FP5 routing silicon.

FP5 allows the delivery of more than three times more capacity in the same space and power envelope as the Nokia FP4 hardware, currently in Hyperoptic’s IP network. The deployment of FP5 is one of the first in Europe. 

Nokia said its system design innovation ensures that both the FP5 and FP4 can concurrently operate at line rate in the same SR-s system for economic, deterministic scaling of capacity along with extending the network life of deployed systems.

Nextlink rolls out Nokia's XGS-PON in 12 states

Nextlink Internet, a rural-based and rural-focused operator in the U.S., has chosen Nokia's XGS-PON solution to support network growth, connecting 200,000 homes and businesses in rural and exurban communities in its seven existing and five new states.

Nextlink is investing in network expansion, adding Texas, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Wyoming and Louisiana to its footprint. The company is also expanding its reach into unserved and underserved areas in the states it already operates, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois, Iowa and South Dakota.

Nokia’s XGS-PON technology allows Nextlink to deploy 10G broadband speeds with a simple path to 25G. Nokia Bell Labs demos 100G PON over a single wavelength

At Fiber Connect 2022 in Nashville, Nokia Bell Labs showed the first proof-of-concept demonstration of 100G PON. Mavenir raises $155 million

Mavenir announced a $155 million capital raise for its cloud-native mobile network software. Siris, a leading technology focused private equity firm, will remain the majority equity holder alongside material minority investor Koch Strategic Platforms, a subsidiary of Koch Industries.

The transaction brings total strategic capital raised since July 2022 to $250 million.

NETGEAR debuts 5G mobile hotspot with WiFi6

NETGEAR expanded its line-up of 5G mobile hotspots. 

The NETGEAR Nighthawk M6 Mobile Hotspot Router (MR6150) increases the maximum 5G speed that can be supported and adding 160MHz capability to connect with the latest WiFi 6 client devices. The M6 can hit a maximum combined WiFi speed of up to 3.6Gbps when connecting to 160MHz WiFi 6 devices. 

Additionally, the M6 features an In-Home Performance Mode which boosts WiFi coverage up to 2,000 square-feet when the device is plugged in, and the battery is removed. 

The device has a color touch screen to  monitor data usage, view the WiFi name/password, check mobile signal strength and manage device and network settings. The Gigabit Ethernet and USB-C ports can be used to connect and distribute fast internet speeds to wired devices and external 5G antennas (sold separately) can be connected to the available antenna ports to boost reception in buildings, at remote sites or wherever network coverage is sparse.

DC BLOX breaks ground on Myrtle Beach Cable Landing Station

DC BLOX has commenced construction on its 15 megawatt  international subsea cable landing station (CLS) in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, along with a new dark fiber route linking Myrtle Beach with the connectivity hub of the southeast in Atlanta. The CLS is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2023, while the fiber route will be completed in the first quarter 2024.

Wind River teams with Tata Consultancy on vRAN

Wind River is collaborating with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) for hosting vRAN solutions on Wind River Studio. The aim is to create a full stack, mobile infrastructure solution with TCS deployment and engineering services for use in a 4G-5G vRAN next gen network using Studio as the cloud platform.

Samsung updates roadmap, aims for 1.4nm nodes in 2027

At its annual Samsung Foundry Forum event in San Jose, California, Samsung Electronics outlined its goals to drive process nodes to 1.4nm in 2027. 

Samsung, which currently has 3nm process technology in mass production, Samsung will be further enhancing gate-all-around (GAA) based technology and plans to introduce the 2nm process in 2025 and 1.4nm process in 2027.

The event focused on foundry process technology innovation, process technology optimization for each specific applications, stable production capabilities, and customized services, including the enhancement its GAA-based 3nm process support for HPC and mobile applications. Samsung will also diversify the 4nm process for HPC and automotive applications.

For automotive customers specifically, Samsung is currently providing embedded non-volatile memory (eNVM) solutions based on 28nm technology. In order to support automotive-grade reliability, the company plans to further expand process nodes by launching 14nm eNVM solutions in 2024 and adding 8nm eNVM in the future. Samsung has been mass producing 8nm RF following 14nm RF, and 5nm RF is currently in development.

“The technology development goal down to 1.4nm and foundry platforms specialized for each application, together with stable supply through consistent investment are all part of Samsung’s strategies to secure customers’ trust and support their success,” said Dr. Si-young Choi, president and head of Foundry Business at Samsung Electronics. “Realizing every customer's innovations with our partners has been at the core of our foundry service."

Samsung also confirmed that its 3D packaging X-Cube with micro-bump interconnection will be ready for mass production in 2024, and bump-less X-Cube will be available in 2026.

In addition, Samsung highlighted its production expansion. The company plans to expand its production capacity for the advanced nodes by more than three times by 2027 compared to this year. Including the new fab under construction in Taylor, Texas, Samsung's foundry manufacturing lines are currently in five locations: Giheung, Hwaseong, and Pyeongtaek in Korea; and Austin and Taylor in the United States.

Lockheed Martin and Verizon demo 5G.MIL drones

Lockheed Martin and Verizon demonstrated 5G-enabled drones for capturing and securely transfering real-time intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) data from aircraft in flight. 

The demonstration, which occurred at Lockheed Martin’s 5G test range in Waterton, Colorado, used mmWave 5G to move data from aircraft in flight over Lockheed Martin’s multi-site, multi-vendor 5G.MIL pilot network.

Lockheed Martin flew four rotary wing drones on coordinated ISR missions while linked to two Verizon On Site Private Network nodes. The companies then seamlessly and securely moved the data captured by the drones between a 5G private network and a surrogate public network. 

The companies said the ability to use private and public 5G networks is key because it will extend the reach of 5G.MIL technology to a range of military environments where commercial networks may not be available or appropriate.

The drones then successfully located a target in the field that was transmitting a low power RF signal. The signal was detected because real-time drone sensing data was transmitted over the Verizon network and then processed by advanced signal processing algorithms running on edge compute resources, enabling geolocation of the signal source.

“To stay ahead of our adversaries, military decision-makers need the timely and accurate information that 5G.MIL delivered in this demonstration,” said Dan Rice, vice president of 5G.MIL Programs at Lockheed Martin. “By blending advanced commercial 5G capabilities with military capabilities using secure, open standards, we are helping to make the DOD’s vision for integrated deterrence a reality.”
