SANWA acquires Fiberon for passive and active connectors

SANWA Denki Kogyo Co., Ltd. completed its acquisition of Fiberon Technologies, another provider of fiber optic network solutions. Financial terms were not disclosed.

FIBERON, founded in 1998, specializes in advanced passive and active connectivity products for the optical fiber communications market.

Nokia awarded optical contracts in Nepal

Subisu, a leading service provider in Nepal, has selected Nokia to modernize the 1500 kilometers long backbone network spread across East and West Nepal. Nokia has deployed its 400G single fiber solution to provide ultra-high-speed broadband to Subisu’s retail and enterprise subscribers.  The Nokia 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) platform offering Photonic Service Engine (PSE) enabled 400G single fiber, bidirectional Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) solution is now deployed across the country. This is the first operation of such a solution anywhere.

Separately, Nokia announced that CG NET will deploy its GPON solution as part of an extensive Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) roll-out across the Kathmandu Valley. Nokia’s solution will enable CG NET to offer the fastest broadband speeds in the market and competitive service offering for IPTV, gaming, remote work and remote education. 


Nokia notes that it now has more than 300 GPON deployments worldwide.

Vapor IO debuts Kinetic Grid -- edge-to-edge with national backbone

Vapor IO introduced its Kinetic Grid platform, an intelligent infrastructure service with an edge-to-edge national backbone.

The service combines colocation, networking and interconnection infrastructure into a nationwide platform for modern applications. Vapor IO has entered into strategic partnerships with Zayo and VMware.

Vapor IO said its service will offer  real time telemetry for contextualizing resources, responding to actual and predicted failure conditions, as well as hypercomposing resource flows for implementing the Open Grid.

Vapor IO also operates its Kinetic Edge Exchange, a high-speed, software-defined interconnection services platform at the edge. Customers can cross-connect, via software, to other networks on Vapor IO’s platform.

NeoPhotonics ships QSFP-DD and OSFP 400ZR coherent modules

NeoPhotonics announced the general availability of its QSFP-DD and OSFP 400ZR pluggable modules.

These products utilize NeoPhotonics Silicon Photonics Coherent Optical Subassembly (COSA) and low power consumption, ultra-narrow linewidth Nano-ITLA tunable laser, combined with the latest generation of 7 nm node DSP, to provide full 400ZR transmission in a standard data center QSFP-DD or OSFP form factor that can be plugged directly into switches and routers. 

NeoPhotonics QSFP-DD and OSFP modules have completed reliability qualification and have passed 2000 hours of High Temperature Operating Life (HTOL) as well as other critical tests per Telcordia requirements.

The company recently announced that it had used its QSFP-DD coherent pluggable transceiver to transmit at a 400 Gbps data rate over a distance of 800 km in a 75GHz-spaced DWDM system with more than 3.5 dB of OSNR margin in the optical signal while remaining within the power consumption envelope of the QSFP-DD module’s power specification.

Streamlining the Mobile Optical Pluggables (MOPA) ecosystem

Nokia, Ericsson, II-VI, Lumentum and Sumitomo Electric have today published a joint technical paper making the case for reducing the wide choice of Mobile Optical Pluggables (MOPA) used to connect cell sites to fiber networks. The two telco equipment makers and three optics suppliers behind the paper have recommended predefined optical blueprints that help operators speed up time to market using a common list of optical pluggables in a market worth US$500 million per year.

Blackstone Funds to acquire QTS for $10 billion


Investment funds managed by Blackstone will all outstanding shares of common stock of QTS Realty Trust for $78.00 per share in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $10 billion. The deal includes a 40-day "go-shop period" during which QTS may solicit other proposals.

Upon completion of the transaction, the parties expect that QTS will continue to be led by its senior management team and maintain its corporate headquarters in Overland Park, Kansas.

AT&T completes first call on newly-acquired C-Band

AT&T completed the first call on its network utilizing C-Band spectrum, which was awarded just three months ago. 

The call was made using a 5G smartphone form factor mobile test device powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System using the Nokia AirScale baseband and 5G massive MIMO (mMIMO) 64T64R C-Band radio. The milestone was achieved early May in Detroit, Michigan by engineers from both AT&T and Nokia, who jointly worked quickly to demonstrate the potential of the newly available n77 spectrum (n77: 3700 – 3980Mhz). The test utilized one of Nokia’s new mMIMO antennas that is designed to operate in the n77 C-Band in conjunction with the latest Nokia 5G software. The joint team will continue to test performance ahead of commercial network deployment, which is anticipated to begin later this year.


Nokia recently signed a five-year deal with AT&T to deploy the mobile operator’s C-Band network across the U.S. It will deliver enhanced mobile broadband capabilities and increase the range of 5G applications and services to a wide range of consumers and customers.

Gigabit mmWave connection extended over 10 km -- a new record

Nokia, Qualcomm Technologies, and UScellular extended a near gigabit speed mmWave connection over more than 10 km -- a new record.

The field trial, which utilized Nokia’s AirScale Baseband and mmWave Radios in the 28 GHz (n261) band, was conducted on UScellular’s commercial network in Grand Island, Nebraska. The companies jointly tested multiple locations with different scenarios, measuring distance, throughput and latency.

UScellular said the milestone paves the way to bring extended range 5G service with massive capacity and low latency to even more regions across the U.S., including rural areas.

FCC sets 3.45 GHz band auction procedures


The FCC’s Office of Economics and Analytics and the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau established the application and bidding procedures for Auction 110, the auction of spectrum in the 3.45 GHz band.  Bidding is scheduled to start on October 5, 2021.

Auction 110 will offer up to 4,060 new flexible-use licenses in the 3.45 to 3.55 GHz band divided into ten 10-megahertz blocks licensed by geographic areas known as Partial Economic Areas (PEAs).  In the first phase of the auction, the clock phase, bidders will bid on generic blocks in each geographic area.  In the second phase, the assignment phase, they will bid on frequency-specific license assignments.  The notice announces upfront payment and minimum opening bid amounts as well as the availability of bidding credit discounts for eligible small businesses, rural service providers, and for the deployment of facilities and services to qualified federally recognized tribal lands.  


“This is a critical step toward delivering on the promise of 5G,” said Rosenworcel.  “This auction will bring us closer to 5G service that is fast, secure, resilient, and most importantly, available across the country.  I want to thank the great FCC staff for their work on this as well as our partners in the National Telecommunications and Information Administration and the Department of Defense.”

The Public Notice sets a reserve price of approximately $14.7 billion.  By releasing the Public Notice and setting a bidding start date of October 5, the FCC is fulfilling Congress’s directive in the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021, to begin auctioning these airwaves by December 31, 2021. 

Alibaba Cloud to open first data center in the Philippines

Alibaba Cloud announced plans to build its first data center in the Philippines by the end of this year. 

The new data center will extend the reach of Alibaba Cloud’s offerings in the Philippines, ranging from elastic compute, database, security and network services to machine learning and data analytics capabilities. Local businesses across sectors such as financial technology (FinTech), e-commerce, education and media will be able to adopt and implement cloud technologies more efficiently and better position themselves to capture the emerging opportunities in the country. The facility will be located in Manila.

Viavi enhances its Optical Network Monitoring

Viavi Solutions introduced multiple new capabilities for its Optical Network Monitoring Solutions (ONMS) family of remote test and monitoring solutions. 

Highlights:

  • A new, patented Flash Fiber Monitoring feature for ONMSi and SmartOTU software that enables operators to detect and locate a flash attenuation that causes network route flapping and burst network error conditions. Viavi says the feature is 100 to 300 times faster than traditional monitoring, with performance that can detect flash attenuation in an unprecedented one-tenth of a second. Network route flapping is one of the most common but damaging and difficult problems to diagnose.  Until now, operators had no way to detect or locate flash attenuation events that are a root cause of millions of communication errors globally every year.
  • New iOTDR Micro and Nano cards that enable NEMs to integrate optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) technology into their elements at a low price, with low power and a small footprint. The advanced software library for the cards provides operators with the industry’s most diverse range of uses cases via an element-integrated iOTDR solution, potentially saving NEM R&D teams 2–3-person years of development time. The cards support NEMs and their efforts for operators with an unmatched range of applications that include fiber characterization, fiber monitoring, tapping security intrusion detection, fault demarcation, Raman amplified link test, and tracking fiber degradation for preventative maintenance.
  • New fiber network analytics using the NITRO BI Fiber Insight Platform for ONMSi, automate fiber diagnostics to proactively eliminate risks and create a prioritized network performance improvement action plan. The fiber trends and aging use cases allow operators to see simplified reporting across the entire fiber network to revise procedures.  All fibers can be graded by the cable, customer, network location down to the root cause fault type – turning mountains of raw data into actionable insight.

Google's Firmina cable to link North and South America

Google announced plans to build a 12-fiber pair subsea cable linking North and South America via the Atlantic.

The Firmina cable system, which will be designed, manufactured and installed by SubCom, will run from the East coast of the United States to Las Toninas, Argentina, with additional landings in Praia Grande, Brazil and Punta del Este, Uruguay. 

The Firmina system will use SubCom's 18kV power technology, which will enable Firmina to be the world's longest cable capable of maintaining operations with single-end feed power, in the event there is a far-end fault. 


Manufacture of the cable and equipment will take place at SubCom’s recently expanded manufacturing campus in Newington, NH, USA during 2021 and early 2022, with main lay installation operations scheduled for summer 2022. The system is expected to be ready for service by the end of 2023.

In a blog post announcing the cable, Bikash Koley, VP Global Networking, Google Cloud stated: “As people and businesses have come to depend on digital services for many aspects of their lives, Firmina will improve access to Google services for users in South America. With 12 fiber pairs, the cable will carry traffic quickly and securely between North and South America, giving users fast, low-latency access to Google products such as Search, Gmail and YouTube, as well as Google Cloud services.”

The cable is named after Maria Firmina dos Reis (1825 - 1917), a Brazilian abolitionist, considered Brazil’s first novelist, whose 1859 novel, Úrsula, depicted life for Afro-Brazilians under slavery.

Including Firmina, Google now has investments in 16 subsea cables, such as Dunant, Equiano and Grace Hopper, and consortium cables like Echo, JGA, INDIGO, and Havfrue.

Avicena develops highly parallel optical interconnect for chips

Avicena, a start-up based in Mountain View, California, unveiled a highly parallel optical interconnect technology targeting up to 10 meters reach for chip-to-chip interconnects in distributed computing, processor-to-memory disaggregation, and other advanced computing applications. 

Avicena's LightBundle is based on arrays of novel GaN high-speed micro-emitters, leveraging the microLED display manufacturing ecosystem, and is fully compatible with high performance silicon ICs. The company has demonstrated an array of 200 CROME devices with a pitch of 30μm coupled to an array of PDs with a multi-core imaging fiber. Avicena says individual lanes show excellent performance characteristics up to a data rate of 10Gbps over the full temperature range of -40°C to 150°C. This extrapolates to an aggregate link bandwidth of 2Tbps for 200 lanes with a bandwidth density of 10Tbps/mm2.

“All of this is changing with the recent advances in optical emitter technology driven by advances in the display industry,” says Bardia Pezeshki, founder and CEO of Avicena. “We have developed very high-performance optical transmitters based on emitter technology from the display industry. These innovative devices would have been impractical just a few years ago. Our optimized devices and materials support 10Gbps links per lane over -40°C to +150°C temperature with excellent reliability. We refer to our new optical sources as Cavity-Reinforced Optical Micro-Emitters or CROMEs. We connect CROME arrays with CMOS compatible PDs using multi-core fiber bundles to create massively parallel interconnects with 1000s of parallel lanes over a reach of up to 10m. We call this new class of optical interconnect the Avicena LightBundleTM.”

The company says the parallel nature of its LightBundle technology is well-matched to parallel chiplet interfaces like AIB, HBI, and BoW, and can also be used to extend the reach of standard compute interconnects like PCIe, NVLink, and multi-channel G/DDR memory links with low power and low latency.

Corning showcases fiber innovations

Corning is showcasing its new fiber and cable innovations at this week's virtual OFC. Highlights:

  • MiniXtend cable line. This 192-fiber micro cable with binderless FastAccess® technology will leverage Corning’s new SMF-28 Contour fiber with 190-micron outer diameter. The compact MiniXtend XD cable provides installers with greater flexibility in tighter spces without sacrificing fiber density or deployment speed – enabling 33% more fibers per duct compared to legacy MiniXtend HD cable and 70% faster cable access compared to traditional cable designs.

AWS launches Proton app delivery service for containers

Amazon Web Services announced the general availability of AWS Proton, an application delivery service that makes it easier for customers to provision, deploy, and monitor microservices for container and serverless applications. 

With AWS Proton, a customer’s infrastructure team creates standard application stacks defining the architecture, infrastructure resources, CI/CD (continuous integration and continuous delivery) pipeline, and observability tools—and then makes these stacks available to their developers. Developers can use AWS Proton’s self-service interface to select an application stack for use with their code. AWS Proton automatically provisions the resources for the selected application stack, deploys the code, and sets up monitoring so developers can begin building serverless and container applications without having to learn, configure, or maintain the underlying resources. There are no upfront commitments or fees to use AWS Proton, and customers pay only for the AWS services used to create, scale, and run their applications.

Xilinx debuts Versal AI Edge series processors

Xilinx introduced the Versal AI Edge series processors, boasting 4X the AI performance-per-watt versus GPUs and 10X greater compute density versus previous-generation adaptive SoCs.

Xilinx is positioning the new Versal AI Edge adaptive compute acceleration platforms (ACAPs) for a range of applications including: automated driving with the highest levels of functional safety, collaborative robotics, predictive factory and healthcare systems, and multi-mission payloads for the aerospace and defense markets. The portfolio features AI Engine-ML to deliver 4X machine learning compute compared to the previous AI Engine architecture and integrates new accelerator RAM with an enhanced memory hierarchy for evolving AI algorithms. These architectural innovations deliver up to 4X AI performance-per-watt versus GPUs and lower latency resulting in far more capable devices at the edge.

Samsung announces 8nm RF chip architecture for 5G

Samsung Electronics introduced its newest radio frequency (RF) technology based on 8-nanometer (nm) process.

Samsung’s 8nm RF process technology is the latest addition to an already broad portfolio of RF-related solutions, including 28nm- and 14nm-based RF. The company notes shiptment of more than 500 million mobile RF chips for premium smartphones since 2017.

Samsung has developed a unique architecture exclusive to 8nm RF named RFextremeFET (RFeFET) that can significantly improve RF characteristics while using less power. In comparison to 14nm RF, Samsung’s RFeFET supplements the digital PPA scaling and restores the analog/RF scaling at the same time, thereby enabling high-performance 5G platforms. Compared to 14nm RF, Samsung’s 8nm RF process technology provides up to a 35-percent increase in power efficiency with a 35-percent decrease in the RF chip area as a result of the RFeFET architectural innovation.

Marcatel deploys 600G Long-haul in Mexico with Ciena

Marcatel, a telecommunications carrier based in Mexico, is deploying Ciena’s coherent optical technology to support a new network connecting Querétaro, Mexico, to McAllen, Texas. The network, which serves content delivery providers and wholesale carriers, allows Marcatel to offer low-latency, high-capacity data center interconnect (DCI) services at speeds up to 600Gbps across long distances.

Marcatel installed Ciena’s flexible 6500 photonic line system and Waveserver 5 powered by WaveLogic 5 Extreme for multi-terabit capacity across a long-haul coherent optical network of more than 1000km, providing high fiber capacity without regeneration. With this deployment, Marcatel can instantly react to unpredictable traffic demands by scaling connectivity and capacity to support a wide array of applications and services—all while taking up less space in equipment rooms with a compact footprint.

Amazon Web Services is adding a third Availability Zone (AZ) to the China (Beijing) Region operated by Sinnet.


Fow AWS, an AZ encompasses one or more discrete data centers in separate facilities, each with redundant power, networking, and connectivity. With this launch, both AWS Regions in China offer three AZs.
