DT deploys massive MIMO antennas in Darmstadt for 5G test

Deutsche Telekom announced the deployment of a first group of 5G antennas in the city of Darmstadt. The new systems follow 5G-antenna test fields in Berlin and the Port of Hamburg. 

The carrier plans to install 18 Massive MIMO test antennas and conduct a 5G test field in the city to gather experience with installation and operation of systems for the new technology. In addition, a range of 5G applications and devices will be tested. For the project, Deutsche Telekom is cooperating closely with the City of Darmstadt and with Ericsson, its technology partner.

"Our test fields are enabling us now, prior to the market launch of 5G, to gain important experience with 5G," explained Walter Goldenits, Chief Technology Officer at Telekom Deutschland. "We are happy to see that Darmstadt, the Digital City, has joined Berlin and Hamburg in pioneering this new communications standard. We plan to carry out additional tests this year. After all, there will be no avoiding 5G in 2019."

Jochen Partsch, Lord Mayor of the Science City Darmstadt: "As a digital city Darmstadt we want to become a national and international pioneer in the testing of Smart City technologies. We are proud that, in addition to the German cities of Berlin and Hamburg, another test field is being built in Darmstadt. The future 5G standard is an important further development of the mobile communications network which, thanks to ultra-fast and reliable information transmission in real time, will enable us, for example, to implement networked driving and autonomous local public transport."

In addition, Deutsche Telekom, working in cooperation with hubraum, its Berlin-based start-up incubator, has launched a 5G prototyping program. The start-ups at hubraum are now using Deutsche Telekom's 5G test field in Berlin to develop 5G applications under live conditions. The 5G cluster in Berlin, which has been in operation since May 2018, now comprises more than 50 antennas.

Ciena's Blue Planet evolves as an independent division for automation

Ciena’s Blue Planet is being evolved into a more independent division focused on intelligent automation, writes Rick Hamilton, Senior VP, Blue Planet Software. The aim is to create a more independent division that is separate from Ciena’s primary hardware equipment business in order to better pursue the opportunity of intelligent software-based network automation.

Blue Planet was formed in 2015 through Ciena's acquisition of Cyan. Ciena has since acquired Packet Design for its layer 3 route optimization and DonRiver for its unified OSS inventory federation solution.

Today, Blue Planet is pursuing a more holistic approach to automation, writes Hamilton. Closed-loop automation will enable service providers to "to leverage a dynamic view of network and service resources to derive business insights that shape network control policies and inform IT systems with real-time information."

Brazil's Sumicity deploys Padtec’s new 100G dual transponders

Sumicity, a Brazilian provider of telecommunications services, is deploying Padtec’s new 100 Gbps dual transponders to expand the transmission capacity of its DWDM networks in the southeast of Brazil.

With the expansion, Sumicity's DWDM backbone will reach approximately 3,500 kilometers across the region. Sumicity has already activated more than 2,000 kilometers of the optical network in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

Padtec’s new line of 100 and 200 Gbps (per optical channel) transponders bring higher data rates, greater density and lower power consumption per transmitted bit for Padtec’s LightPad i6400G platform.

"One of the technical innovations of this generation of transponders lies in the more flexible network interfaces that allow better adaptation of the optical channels to the demands of performance and expansion of the network," says Argemiro Sousa, Padtec’s Business Director.

"There were more than 200 kilometers of illuminated optical networks to connect the interior to the capital of Rio de Janeiro, with transmission rates of 100 Gbps”, says Fábio Abreu, CEO of Sumicity. “One of the reasons we are investing in the expansion of our backbone is so that we can take Sumicity Play, our IPTV HD (fiber optic TV), to all the cities included in our expansion project, as well as the 27 cities where Sumicity Play is already present. Cisco completes Luxtera acquisition

Cisco completed its previously announced acquisition of privately-held Luxtera.

Cisco said it plans to incorporate Luxtera’s technology across its intent-based networking portfolio, spanning enterprise, data center and service provider markets.


Cisco to acquire Luxtera for silicon photonics -- $660M

Cisco agreed to acquire privately-held Luxtera, a developer of silicon photonic technologies, for $660 million in cash and assumed equity awards.

Luxtera, which is based in Carlsbad, California, focuses on silicon photonics process and packaging technologies for building integrated optics capabilities for webscale and enterprise data centers, service provider market segments, and other customers.

Luxtera leverages a hybrid integration approach wherein the photonics die forms the base of the transceiver chipset, while the light source and electronics die are attached on top. The company says its ability to integrate all optical components into a single silicon chip enables it to manufacture at wafer scale.

Cisco said the integration of Luxtera will broaden its portfolio of 100GbE and 400GbE optics. Cisco plans to incorporate Luxtera's technology across its intent-based networking portfolio, spanning enterprise, data center and service provider markets.

DT targets integrated SIM for IoT

Deutsche Telekom, working in partnership with industry partners, has led the development of nuSIM, which moves the SIM functionality from the physical SIM card directly to the chipset.

nuSIM is specifically designed for low-cost devices used in mobile IoT applications with a long life-span, such as asset trackers or smart motion or temperature sensors. It will be commercially available in the second half of 2019.

CoreSite's Q4 revenue rises 10.5% yoy

CoreSite Realty reported Q4 2018 operating revenues of $139.1 million, up 10.5% year over year and in line sequentially. Q4 net income amounted $0.54 per diluted common share, up 22.7% year over year and 3.8% sequentially.

CoreSite said scale colocation leasing for the quarter was impacted by the fact that occupancies were high and therefore capacity was constrained for large blocks of contiguous space in certain markets.

“We delivered solid results in 2018, while expanding our customer ecosystem and building our new capacity pipeline,” said Paul Szurek, CoreSite’s Chief Executive Officer. “In 2019, our focus is to continue executing on high-value edge and hybrid cloud deployments requiring direct interconnection to networks and cloud on-ramps. Fortinet intros Intent-based, next-gen firewalls

Fortinet introduced its new line of high-performance FortiGate Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFWs) for intent-based segmentation of security architecture. The idea with intent-based Segmentation is to allow organizations to achieve granular access control, continuous trust assessment, end-to-end visibility and automated threat protection. The new platforms are powered by customized Security Processor Units (SPUs).

Some highlights:
  • FortiGate 3600E Series deliver 30Gbps threat protection performance and 34Gbps SSL inspection performance. With high-density interfaces of 10G, 40G and 100G, it offers product consolidation and meets the needs of diverse deployments. Cisco to acquire Singularity Networks for traffic analytics

Cisco has agreed to acquire Singularity Networks, a privately-held network infrastructure analytics company based in Lone Tree, Colorado. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Singularity Networks will join the automation group within Cisco’s Service Provider Business Unit. Cisco plans to integrate Singularity Networks’ analytics capabilities into its Crosswork Network Automation portfolio for Service Providers.

Marvell warns on Q4 citing weaker cloud capital spending

Marvell Technology Group updated its financial guidance for its fourth quarter of fiscal 2019, which ended on February 2, 2019. The company now expects its fourth-quarter fiscal 2019 preliminary unaudited revenue to be in the range of $735 million to $745 million, below its previously announced guidance range of $790 million to $830 million.

Marvell said the majority of its fourth-quarter revenue shortfall was due to a weaker than expected storage controller business. The company believes demand for its products was impacted primarily by macroeconomic uncertainty, reduction in cloud capital spending and PC CPU shortages. The exception was embedded processors for networking and 4G & pre-5G wireless infrastructure which met expectations.

The company expects the weakness in demand that it saw in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2019 to continue in the first quarter of fiscal 2020.

"Although we are disappointed with our fourth quarter revenue, we continued to run the business efficiently under difficult end market conditions and are satisfied with gross margin execution and operating expense management," said Matt Murphy, President and CEO. "We are optimistic that demand will begin to improve later this year, as inventory levels adjust in customer's supply chains, and capital spending picks up. While we will prudently manage our operating expenses to reflect this softer demand environment, we remain committed to the key initiatives that we outlined at our Investor Day and are on track to launch our 5G base station products later this fiscal year. We have conviction in our strategy to drive long-term growth and we remain focused on execution."

Column: How Satellites will Reshape Data Connectivity in 2019

Next-generation satellite services are set to transform data connectivity as we know it, opening up new markets and bringing the opportunities of the digital era to unconnected – and under-connected – industries and end-user populations around the world, to what would be roughly 3.7 billion people that were still offline by the end of 2018 according to the International Telecommunications Union.

This connectivity shift is already underway. In 2018, the satellite industry continued to advance its global reach and cloud-scale data networking capabilities with the launch or plans for additional satellites across multiple orbits (GEO, MEO and LEO), new partnerships to develop application-specific antennas to serve emerging customer edge terminals, and expansion into connectivity deals with major cloud providers – to name just a few milestones.

In addition, the satellite industry continues to take more of a leadership role in global network standards bodies and industry organizations – such as MEF, Telecom Infra Project (TIP) and the Linux Foundation Networking Fund, amongst others – to continue the drive to make satellite a seamless part of the global networking ecosystem.

As a result of the progress that’s been made, today satellite-enabled connectivity is delivered with fiber-like, cloud-optimized performance to aviation, energy, maritime, government, telecom service providers and mobile network operators around the world.

In the year ahead, we expect to see satellite become further entrenched as a standard connectivity option for customers, taking its rightful place alongside fiber and microwave technologies. As satellite connectivity moves into the mainstream, we will also begin to see more advanced services, capabilities and use cases emerge, and here are four that we expect to see take shape beginning in 2019:

Cloud connectivity and IoT – A recent IDC report estimates worldwide technology spending on IoT will reach $1.2 trillion by 2022. Satellite-enabled cloud and edge compute connectivity will allow organizations in remote or hard-to-reach locations monitor the health of their operations using IoT. This will open up the IoT opportunity for governments and entire vertical industries in areas where connectivity has traditionally been non-existent or poor – for example, industrial IoT services on oil rigs, mining sites and energy farms, to name a few – allowing them to send large amounts of data to the cloud or the edge for real-time processing and analytics. This kind of ubiquitous low-latency satellite connectivity will also present significant opportunities for cloud providers to tap into a wide range of market segments and organizations in developing and remote geographies looking to utilize IoT.

SD-WAN to fuel true multi-access connectivity – In 2018, we saw telecom service providers reap the benefits of global hybrid connectivity as they continue to seek cost-efficient ways to drive new revenue streams. This approach combines MEO and GEO satellite constellations with providers’ existing terrestrial connectivity services, allowing customers to deliver different levels of service availability and performance, based on specific application requirements – similar to application-aware routing. In 2019, we will begin to see SD-WAN capabilities emerge to ensure common services and flexible application- and performance-aware routing across this mix of multi-access services.

Accelerating 5G’s Global Footprint – As 5G news heats up in the wake of CES and ahead of Mobile World Congress, the satellite industry’s investments in both space and ground assets are being recognized as valuable assets to help accelerate 5G deployments worldwide. Using satellite’s unique “superpower” of global reach, the combination of multi-orbit constellations will enable MNOs to expand their 5G footprint cost-effectively into regions that are difficult or impossible to serve via their terrestrial assets. Look for the satellite industry players to work closely with each other as well as with leading mobile network operators and industry suppliers to facilitate the integration of satellite into 5G ahead of expected broader deployments in 2020.  Expect to see more technical and interoperability demos, such as the recent European Commission Horizon2020 SaT5G project.

Elevating the customer experience – In the year ahead, we expect to see customers move further along on the satellite connectivity adoption curve – taking a step beyond basic connectivity to a focus on customized services that elevate their customers’ experience, and we are already seeing the beginning stages of this evolution today. For example, many commercial aviation providers, as well as international cruise line operators, have already conquered basic satellite connectivity in the sky and at sea and are now considering how to optimize their operations and services with customized applications and a premium, differentiated experience. In contrast, government agencies are looking at how to use their service to evolve enterprise tools and applications, while still other market segments are just arriving at the basic connectivity stage. As these deployments continue to mature, we will begin to see this focus on the customer experience incorporated into all stages of the satellite connectivity adoption curve.

Once viewed as complex, expensive, and proprietary, the traditional role of satellite has been completely disrupted through investment, innovation and interoperability. Making satellite seamless is the primary goal of the industry’s network modernization strategy and complements our vision that integrates satellite-based connectivity services with the capabilities and advanced services of 5G networks and cloud platforms. The end result will be an automated, virtualized network service platform that allows customers and technology partners to onboard new applications and launch new, satellite-based managed services in an orchestrated, standards-based environment.

And in 2019, as satellite becomes increasingly seamless combined with its inherent global reach advantages, the industry looks for it to lead the charge to attain digital equality, open new markets and enable opportunities through innovative and affordable satellite-enabled managed data services. In doing so, the satellite industry will help our customers elevate the service experience and benefit end users all over the world.

Zain tests massive MIMO on TD-LTE using 2.6 GHz with Nokia

Zain KSA is testing a massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) pilot in the city of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia on its TD-LTE network using 2.6 GHz spectrum. The pilot uses Nokia's 5G-ready AirScale massive MIMO antenna for 4.9G calls to improve network capacity to provide speeds of above 700 Mbps per user.

Massive MIMO uses 64-Transmit-64-Receive (64T64R), which allows gigabit-level throughput. Nokia said its 5G-ready AirScale massive MIMO antenna paves the way for the transition to 5G and coexistence with LTE on the 2.6 GHz band, delivering better network capacity, improving coverage and significantly enhancing uplink and downlink speed.

Furukawa brings a new line of fiber splicers

Furukawa Electric Co. introduced its FITEL S185 series of Fusion Splicers specifically designed for splicing specialty optical fibers used in optical components, fiber lasers, and optical sensors.

Furukawa's S185 Fusion Splicer series is a line of more compact, cost-effective, and efficient splicers for use in production and with specialized fibers including Polarization-Maintaining Fiber (PM Fiber) and Large-Diameter Fiber (LDF). Three versions of the splicer are being introduced: the S185PM, the S185HS, and the S185LDF. While the S185PM and S185HS splicers are designed for use with PM Fiber for optical components, the S185LDF splicer was developed for use with LDF in constructing and maintaining fiber lasers.

Turkcell CEO issues statement defending Huawei

Kaan TerzioÄŸlu, CEO of Turkcell, issued the following statement defending Huawei as a reliable business partner in light of claims about national security.

"It wouldn’t be right to evaluate Huawei’s current situation by ignoring the competition in the smart phone market and the conflict of which company will lead 5G. You may recall that last year another smartphone company faced unfavorable news. As you can see, whenever an ‘unexpected’ company gets ahead, they are confronted. CommScope announces 3.5 GHz antennas for macro and small cells

CommScope announced new 3.5 GHz-capable antennas for macro and small cell densification to help increase network capacity and migration to 5G.

Key features of CommScope 3.5 GHz-capable antennas:

  • Support 3.5 GHz for macro cell and outdoor small cell deployments with a variety of single band and multiband options available, including beamforming.
  • Enable spectral efficiencies with carrier aggregation, higher-order MIMO, interference management and beam tilt capabilities.
  • Are future-ready as part of the path to 5G and compatible with LTE and earlier radio technologies.

New antennas and filter products now available include:

  • Sector antennas for macro cells with 2.3GHz beamforming
  • Multiband antennas and combiners for macro cells with 1400 MHz support for use in the European Union
  • Both 65° sector and quasi-omni small cell antennas
  • Combiners and tower mounted amplifiers supporting 3.5GHz macro cell and small cell deployments

Shaw optimizes fiber backbone with Fujitsu

Shaw Communications has optimized its fiber-optic network with the Fujitsu Network Communications' 1FINITY platform and Virtuora software.

The Fujitsu 1FINITY T310 Transport and 1FINITY L100 Lambda series blades combined with the Virtuora Network Control Solution provided Shaw with a modular, programmable, optical networking solution to enhance network utilization, capacity and performance, and were well suited to help Shaw achieve its connectivity goals. The Virtuora solution offers software-defined network control capability, network planning and design, network management, as well as service fulfillment and assurance functions.

Arianespace launches two telecom satellites

Arianespace successfully launched two telecommunications satellites: the Saudi Geostationary Satellite 1/Hellas Sat 4 condosat for operators KACST and Hellas Sat; and GSAT-31 for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The launch marked the 103rd Ariane 5 mission.

The Saudi Geostationary Satellite 1 will provide advanced communications services for Saudi Arabia’s KACST (King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology), as well as secure communications for countries belonging to the Gulf Cooperative Council region. The Hellas Sat 4 will provide advanced regional communications services for Arabsat’s subsidiary, Hellas Sat, the Greek-Cypriot satellite operator.

ISRO's GSAT-31 satellite will provide Ku-band transponder capacity for the Indian mainland and islands.

Arianespace said up to five Ariane 5 dual launches are planned in 2019, to orbit a total of 10 geostationary satellites.

Databricks raises $250 million for Big Data Analytics

Databricks, a start-up based in San Francisco that was founded by the original creators of Apache Spark, raised $250 million in a Series E funding for its unified analytics solutions.

The company's Unified Analytics allows organizations to do data science on massive data sets. The approach addresses data silos and the gap between data processing and machine learning platforms.

Databricks said it generated in excess of $100 million in annual recurring revenue during 2018 and experienced approximately 3x year-over-year growth in subscription revenue during the last quarter of 2018.

The new funding round was led by Andreessen Horowitz. Coatue Management, Microsoft, and New Enterprise Associates (NEA) also participated. The company has now raised $498.5 million to date. Its valuation now stands at $2.75 billion.

“Databricks has gone from almost no revenue to over $100 million in annual recurring revenue in just three years, putting us among the fastest growing enterprise software companies,” said Ali Ghodsi, CEO and co-founder of Databricks. “What’s driving this incredible growth is the market’s massive appetite for Unified Analytics. Rancher Labs adds support for multi-cluster Kubernetes applications

Rancher Labs has added support for multi-cluster applications within Rancher, its open source Kubernetes management platform.

Multi-cluster Kubernetes application support extends the feature set of Helm, the Kubernetes package manager. Users simply select the application from the Rancher Application Catalog, add target clusters, provide information about each cluster, and deploy. Multi-cluster applications use Kubernetes controllers running in the Rancher management plane to fetch Helm charts and deploy the application to each target cluster. The use of Helm charts allows Rancher to leverage features like upgrades, rollbacks, and versioning of the applications.

CBRE acquires Romonet for data center analytics

CBRE Group, the global data center real estate firm, has acquired the assets of Romonet, which develops analytics software for data center operators.  Financial terms were not disclosed.

Romonet's software helps increase capacity at data centers. The company was founded in 2008 by data center technology pioneers Zahl Limbuwala and Liam Newcombe. Romonet is based in the UK and serves clients across the globe. Romonet and its team of professionals will be integrated into CBRE’s global Data Center Solutions offering.

John Dunstan, president, Data Center Solutions at CBRE, said: “Romonet adds complementary market-leading solutions to our existing platform and will help us to deliver highly differentiated outcomes for our clients across the globe.”

Investment bank reduces latency with FPGA-based accelerator

Velocimetrics, which supplies flow tracking and real-time, in-stream performance analytics, is using acceleration technology from Napatech to reduce the tick-to-trade latency of a global Tier 1 investment bank in Europe.

After detailed analysis of the bank's complex trading platform, Velocimetrics' analytics identified bottlenecks and latencies which, once corrected, resulted in a reduction in tick-to-trade latency from 100μs (microseconds) to 10μs.

The project used the Napatech SmartNIC FPGA-based solution as a key component in the Velocimetrics suite of products.
