Deutsche Telekom cloudifies its Next Gen IMS platform

Deutsche Telekom announced some major deployment milestones with its NIMS (Next Generation IP Multimedia Subsystem) project to ‘cloudify’ and automate the core of its IP-based voice telephony platform. 

More than ten million voice subscribers have successfully been migrated. 

In addition, billions of interconnect voice minutes with approximately 100 Interconnect partners are now completely processed via NIMS.

“With the launch of our NIMS platform, we have implemented a game-changing level of lifecycle automation for all telco cloud and payload components. This enables Deutsche Telekom to validate and deploy new software for our customers in a few days, or soon even minutes, instead of weeks – thanks to our great team and ambitious partners,” says Abdu Mudesir, CTO of Telekom Deutschland.

DT said the most fundamental innovation is the automation of the platform from end-to-end. 

In addition, Telekom has created an innovative and highly-collaborative multi-vendor ecosystem to deliver on the vision of this highly-automated, cloud-based architecture. Current partners are Juniper Networks (Cloud Infrastructure & Prime Integrator), Mavenir, Metaswitch, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Lenovo und Red Hat. FC Bayern and Deutsche Telekom agreed to an early extension of their 20-year partnership until 2027. Telekom will continue to have exclusive access to content from the club, which the company offers to its customers via FC Bayern.tv on MagentaTV.

Deutsche Telekom remains on course as sales rise 5.9% yoy

Citing strong earnings trends despite macroeconomic headwinds, Deutsche Telekom reported Q2 2022 net revenue of 28.2 billion euros, up 5.9 percent compared to a year earlier. Adjusted net profit was up 15.7 percent to 2.4 billion euros.

“We continue to grow, despite the difficult economic environment,” said Tim Höttges, Chairman of the Board of Management at Deutsche Telekom. “We are well on track this year to meet our ambitious targets announced at the 2021 Capital Markets Day. Our investments are paying off.” 

Some highlights

Germany: revenue and earnings continue to grow 

The Germany segment delivered strong financials in the second quarter of 2022. Revenue grew by 2.7 percent year-on-year to 6.1 billion euros. Adjusted EBITDA AL recorded even stronger growth of 3.1 percent to 2.4 billion euros in the second quarter. This corresponds to an EBITDA margin of 40.0 percent and earnings growth for 23 quarters in a row.

In mobile communications, service revenues grew by 2.6 percent, continuing the high-level growth of the previous quarters. Branded contract net additions of 194,000 substantially exceeded the prior-year quarter.

Telekom remains the strongest broadband provider in the German market, which was weaker overall in the second quarter. 45,000 broadband net additions were recorded between April and June. The number of fiber-optic-based lines (FTTx, retail and wholesale) increased to 17.7 million. This means that around 75 percent of retail broadband customers are already using the fiber infrastructure. 

United States: customer growth at record level

In the second quarter of 2022, the mobile postpaid net additions were at a record level of 1.7 million: the best-ever customer growth in a second quarter, more than the competitors AT&T and Verizon in this quarter combined. The total customer base increased to 110 million, up 5.2 million year-on-year. 

Total revenue at T-Mobile US decreased slightly by 1.1 percent in the reporting quarter to 19.8 billion U.S. dollars. This was due to the decline in revenue from handset leasing, due to the planned gradual withdrawal from this Sprint business model. Adjusted EBITDA AL declined by 2.4 percent to 6.7 billion U.S. dollars. 

Thanks to the fact that the integration of Sprint has continued to progress well and rapidly, T-Mobile US is raising its guidance for the synergies from the business combination to between 5.4 and 5.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2022, up from the previous range of between 5.2 and  5.4 billion U.S. dollars. 

Europe: growth course continues unabated

The European national companies continued to grow unabated in the second quarter. Adjusted EBITDA AL grew 4.5 percent year-on-year in organic terms, making 18 successive quarters of growth. 

Revenue also recorded organic growth of 4.2 percent. The reported revenue of 2.7 billion euros was 2.7 percent lower than in the prior-year quarter. The difference between the reported and organic figures essentially results from the sale of the Romanian fixed-network business at the end of September 2021. 

243,000 mobile contract net additions were recorded in the second quarter. Broadband net additions were at the same level as in the previous quarter at 70,000. 186,000 new users were won for fixed-mobile convergence products.

DT to sell 51% stake in towers business to Digital Bridge and Brookfield

Deutsche Telekom will sell 51 percent of GD Towers comprising its tower assets in Germany and Austria, to Digital Bridge and Brookfield at 17.5 billion euros enterprise value on a cash and debt free basis. 

With around 800 employees, GD Towers operates more than 40,000 sites in Germany and Austria and has a successful track record in delivering new sites for its anchor tenant Telekom Deutschland and securing revenues with third party customers. The Company generated 1.1 billion euros of pro forma revenues in 2021. Pro forma adjusted EBITDA AL 2021 amounted to 640 million euros.

Both Digital Bridge and Brookfield have substantial exposure to the European towers sector. In joining forces with Deutsche Telekom, the partners will provide both expertise and long-dated capital to further refine and evolve the GD Towers strategic plans and ambitions for enhanced value creation in both the core towers business and in fast-growing adjacent segments as well as through M&A. The transaction structure enables GD Towers to pursue these value-accretive investments with a capital structure appropriate for an infrastructure business, which otherwise would be subject to the constraints of the Deutsche Telekom balance sheet.

Deutsche Telekom and Ericsson demo 5G network slicing + SD-WAN

Deutsche Telekom and Ericsson demonstrated 5G end-to-end network slicing for latency-critical enterprise applications with guaranteed Quality of Service. 

The 5G slicing trial includes SD-WAN and end-to-end service orchestration afor latency-critical applications in different countries. This approach will be especially beneficial for global enterprises who run latency-critical applications in different international subsidiaries. 

In this trial, the QoS connectivity was extended from Germany to Poland using a 5G slicing setup that is based on commercial grade Ericsson 5G Standalone (SA) radio and core network infrastructure and a Deutsche Telekom commercial SD-WAN solution. The home operator-controlled User Plane Function (UPF) is placed in Poland as the visited country and the entire setup is managed by an Ericsson orchestrator integrated with a Deutsche Telekom business support system via open TM Forum APIs. Combining 5G slicing and SD-WAN technology allows flexible connectivity establishment and control, while traffic breakout close to the application server in visited countries enables low latency.

Deutsche Telekom said the trial also verified the radio resource partitioning (RRP) for enhanced RAN slicing. The trial achieved an efficient isolation and sharing of radio resources among network slices by isolating the radio resources into partitions that can be associated per network slice in a dynamic way. Each network slice can rely on the availability of a certain minimum allocation of radio resources, while unused capacity is dynamically made available to other network slices, thus maximizing the overall capacity of the system. For an operator, this enables delivery of high-value services with SLA assurance, while at the same time using valuable spectrum efficiently.

Deutsche Telekom updates its logo

Deutsche Telekom is introducing a new, more compact group logo and making the T more the focus of communications. 

Deutsche Telekom said it plans to use the new Group logo in future at all national companies that act under the T brand. In addition, magenta, the corporate color, will remain a distinguishing feature.

Deutsche Telekom launches 5G SA Campus powered by Ericsson

Deutsche Telekom launched a 5G Campus Network offer powered by the Ericsson Private 5G portfolio. The new “Campus-Netz Private” operates completely separated from the public mobile network: all components of the infrastructure from the antennas to the standalone core network to the network server are located on the customer's premises. 

Deutsche Telekom has been offering private network solutions since 2019 and has delivered more than ten of such local networks based on 5G non-standalone technology or LTE across Germany. The new fully private 5G SA Campus network solution  operates on frequencies in the 3.7 to 3.8 GHz range that are specifically allocated to the enterprise. Thus, up to 100 MHz bandwidth is available for the exclusive use within the private campus network.

Tim Höttges to remain CEO of Deutsche Telekom

Tim Höttges to remain CEO of Deutsche Telekom for another five years. His current contract was due to expire at the end of 2023.

Deutsche Telekom's Supervisory Board proposed Frank Appel, CEO of Deutsche Post DHL Group, as its new chairman. He will stand for election at the shareholders' meeting on April 7 next year to succeed Ulrich Lehner.

QSAFE delivers blueprint for European Quantum Infrastructure

Earlier this year, the European Commission has selected the “QSAFE” consortium, led by Deutsche Telekom and including Thales, Thales Alenia Space, Telefónica, and the Austrian Institute of Technology, to design the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI).

QSAFE has now delivered the initial technical design, security analyses, and initial network dimensioning for the EuroQCI network. 

The study, conducted over fifteen months, follows the ‘security-by-design’ approach and elaborates the basis for the deployment of a European quantum infrastructure considering fibre-based terrestrial as well as satellite-based components. It is the follow-up of a first feasibility phase conducted in 2020, with the same consortium led by Thales at that time.

The study is part of the European Union’s efforts to advance the development of independent and secure quantum communication technologies. 

At the end of July 2021, Ireland was the last of the 27 EU Member States to sign the EuroQCI declaration, which is a commitment that the Member States, the European Commission and the European Space Agency together plan to jointly deploy a secure quantum communication infrastructure.

Deutsche Telekom tests the L4S protocol to optimize cloud gaming

Deutsche Telekom (DT) and Ericsson are testing how Low Latency Low Loss Scalable throughput technology (L4S) significantly reduces lag in an interactive cloud-based video game.

The L4S protocol, which is being standardized by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF),  provides high throughput and low latency for IP traffic, resulting in improved, fast rate adaption management, and reduced network congestion, queuing and packet loss. L4S relies on ECN (Explicit Congestion Notification) in the IP header to indicate queue build-up in the radio access network to the application. The congestion signals are then managed at the sender and receiver side thanks to scalable congestion control algorithms. In turn, the technology signals to the application server to adjust the application bit rate to meet the capacity of the established communication link. As a result, L4S is effective in delivering a seamless user experience even with variable traffic load and radio conditions.

Deutsche Telekom: huge opportunity with private 5G

 Deutsche Telekom and Deutsche Messe AG are building one of the largest private 5G campus networks in Europe at the exhibition grounds in Hanover, which cover almost 200 football pitches. The site will serve as a globally unique test field for 5G applications. Deutsche Messe AG is transforming itself from a trade fair organizer to the operator of a site for testing and demonstration purposes. 

Citing figures from Bitkm, Deutsche Telekom notes that 50 percent of companies want to invest in 5G and campus networks,largely because they see digitalization as an important lever to adapt to changing conditions. Business resilience has been especially critical during the pandemic.

Deutsche Telekom opens its Open Telekom Cloud

 Deutsche Telekom announced that companies from regulated industries can now host data covered by data privacy in the Open Telekom Cloud, which is provided from Telekom's data centers in Europe. 

All data remains in Europe. Deutche Telekom says these data centers are among the most secure and modern facilities of their kind in the world.

Deutsche Telekom has made a Group-wide commitment to maintain social secrecy in accordance with § 35 of the German Social Code I (SGB I). Social secrecy ensures that providers of social benefits do not process the data of their members without authorization. Among others, this affects statutory health insurance funds, pension insurance, employment services and employers' liability insurance associations.

DT expands its Open Telekom Cloud with Amsterdam data center

Deutsche Telekom is expanding the reach of its Open Telekom Cloud with the opening of a huge data center campus in Amsterdam.  The facility covers a total area of 21,000 square meters.  DT said its servers and storage will operate under the highest security standards, with electricity exclusively from renewable energy sources. The two facilities in Amsterdam target PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) values of 1.32 and 1.25, which is approximately 30 percent lower consumption than conventional data centers.

"The opening of our cloud data center in Amsterdam strengthens Europe’s data sovereignty," said Adel al Saleh, member of the Telekom Board of Management and CEO T-Systems. "And companies improve their security, because European data protection rules apply.“ 

The new Amsterdam site "mirrors" the two core data centers of the Open Telekom Cloud in Biere and Magdeburg. The distance of around 500 kilometers is well above the critical infrastructure (KRITIS) recommendation of the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). Computing and storage power are still available even if there are outages - due to natural disasters, for example - at the various sites.

DT and Tele2 to sell T-Mobile Netherlands for EUR 5.1 billion

Deutsche Telekom and Tele2 AB will sell T-Mobile Netherlands to private equity funds advised by Apax Partners and Warburg Pincus for 5.1 billion euros. The deal follows DT's 0.7 billion euros divesture of its Dutch mobile tower business earlier this year.

T-Mobile NL is the leading mobile operator in the Netherlands with a market share of 42% in 2020 based on number of mobile SIMs. T-Mobile NL successfully entered the fixed market with the acquisition of Thuis in 2016 and further reinforced its market position by forming a strategic partnership with Open Dutch Fiber (owned by KKR and DTCP) in 2021. It now serves around 700,000 broadband customers as end of second quarter of 2021.

Cash proceeds to Deutsche Telekom are net of proceeds to 25 percent shareholder Tele2 and other debt items. 

Deutsche Telekom and Cellnex to combine Dutch tower portfolios

 Deutsche Telekom and Cellnex Telecom will merge their respective Dutch mobile communications infrastructure companies into Cellnex Netherlands BV (Cellnex NL). Both companies will also become anchor investors in the newly established and independently managed Digital Infrastructure Vehicle (DIV), an investment fund focused on European digital infrastructure.

• Deutsche Telekom operates its Dutch telecommunications tower business in T-Mobile Infra BV, with ca. 3,150 towers and rooftop sites. 
• The business of Cellnex NL, a subsidiary of Cellnex, comprises 984 cell sites. 

The enlarged company, with ca. 4,310 sites including planned new build of 180 sites, will be the largest independent cell mobile tower company in the Netherlands.

T-Mobile Netherlands will continue to have full access to the contributed infrastructure through a long-term service agreement at arm’s length.

In a first step Deutsche Telekom is transferring T-Mobile Infra to the newly established and independently managed fund Digital Infrastructure Vehicle (DIV). 

Deutsche Telekom will receive a EUR 250 million cash payment out of the transaction and a shareholding in DIV in exchange for the T-Mobile Infra business. This translates into a capital commitment of Deutsche Telekom of ca. EUR 400 million to the fund. Cellnex has also agreed, as part of the transaction, to commit EUR 200 million of capital to DIV.

In a second step, DIV will contribute the received T-Mobile Infra business to Cellnex NL. In return, DIV receives approximately 38 percent economic interest in Cellnex NL.

In addition to the anchor investors Deutsche Telekom and Cellnex, DIV will be open to institutional investors. Deutsche Telekom intends to hold a limited partner stake of around 25 percent in the fund after the envisaged third-party investments.

Deutsche Telekom updates network expansion

 Deutsche Telekom said its 5G and FTTH rollouts are moving according to plan.

Two key metrics on the network expansion achieved so far in 2021:

• 430,000 FTTH fixed lines enabled. This required 30,000 km of fiber. In July alone, more than 85,000 connections were made.
• 5G population coverage increased to over 85 percent. A total of 55,000 antennas are now transmitting with 5G in Telekom's mobile network.  5G on the ultra-fast 3.6 GHz frequency band is now available in more than 60 cities.

In a briefing in Bonn, Srini Gopalan, member of the Telekom Board of Management responsible for business in Germany, and Walter Goldenits, Telekom's Head of Technology in Germany, also confirmed that reconstruction in the flooded areas is progressing. Telekom is deploying fiber optics for reconstruction in 17 parts of communities that were severely affected by the floods and will connect around 35,000 households directly to its fiber network.

Srini Gopalan: "With our modern fiber infrastructure, we offer our customers exactly what they expect from us: the best connectivity in the best networks. That's why we're not slowing down in our rollout, but continuing to ramp up our machinery. Our ambition is to be the leader in both fixed and mobile communications. To this end, we are investing over EUR 2 billion a year in fiber roll-out. More than any of our competitors."

"In communities with fewer than 20,000 inhabitants, the digital infrastructure is often not as well developed as in the big cities. That is why we want to implement at least eight million fiber connections in rural areas by 2030. Fiber rollout is a highly complex local business. That is why open dialog with local authorities and their decision-makers is so important to us. That is also one reason why we are increasingly shifting responsibilities and decision-making authority from Bonn to the regions," says Srini Gopalan.

"For us, 5G is an 'and technology', not an 'or technology'. Our 5G approach is all about speed and latency. So is urban and rural 5G. We combine frequency bands. And we use the technologies in such a way that our customers have the highest added value," explains Walter Goldenits.

"We are currently operating stand-alone sites in four German cities and are very satisfied with the tests. This technology will unleash the full potential of virtual and augmented reality, mobile gaming and industrial networking. However, various development steps are still necessary before the switchover is complete, as added value for our customers is our top priority - and this added value lies in providing high-speed coverage over as large an area as possible," continues Walter Goldenits.
