Motorola Solutions signs GlobalFoundries to secure radio chip supply

Motorola Solutions, which supplies two-way radios for public safety, critical infrastructure and enterprise organizations, signed a long-term agreement with GlobalFoundries to supply chip solutions.

The companies point out that several critical chips the company designs for its public safety, professional and commercial radios are manufactured by GF in Vermont. GF's SiGe process technology enables the highly reliable, long-range, secure and clear communications vital to police, fire and other first responders.   

“Millions of first responders, utilities, infrastructure providers and businesses rely on Motorola Solutions radios for everyday and emergency communications, and it is essential that we maintain supply of these critical components,” said Scott Mottonen, senior vice president of products, Motorola Solutions. “Our long-term relationship with GF provides important capabilities, reliable U.S.-based manufacturing and added assurance that we will continue to meet the safety and security needs of our customers across the globe.”

Jury awards Motorola Solutions $764.6m in case against Hytera

A jury in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois awarded $746.6 million to Motorola Solutions in its trade secret theft and copyright infringement case against Hytera Communications of Shenzhen, China and its U.S.-based subsidiaries.  Motorola is now seeking a worldwide injunction preventing Hytera from further misappropriating its stolen trade secrets and infringing its copyrights.

“Today’s verdict is a tremendous victory for our company,” said Greg Brown, chairman and CEO, Motorola Solutions. “Motorola Solutions has always invested significantly in research and development to bring pioneering and beneficial technology to our customers around the world. In contrast, Hytera was simply profiting off of the hard work and innovation of our world-class engineers. The jury’s verdict validates our global litigation against Hytera by definitively affirming that stealing trade secrets and source code will not be tolerated.”

Motorola Solutions opens innovation center at UIUC

Motorola Solutions opened its first college campus innovation center at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Research Park.

The innovation center has the capacity for up to 40 interns with an option for full-time employees in the future. Interns and employees will work directly with Motorola Solutions staff to help move ideas to test mode more quickly. Students will focus on projects for the company’s Chief Technology Office, Advanced Technology and Products organizations.

“Partnering with the University of Illinois provides access to a depth of talent across a number of disciplines, encouraging research in areas that are critical to Motorola Solutions’ future,” said Kelly Mark, executive vice president, Services & Software, Motorola Solutions and University of Illinois alumnus. “The new innovation center will provide an opportunity for the next generation of students and employees to make valuable contributions to the company and broader tech community.”

Motorola Solutions acquires WatchGuard

Motorola Solutions has acquired WatchGuard, a provider of mobile video solutions based in Seattle. Financial terms were not disclosed.

WatchGuard designs and manufactures in-car video systems, body-worn cameras, evidence management systems and software. Its solutions enable law enforcement users to capture, manage, store and share high-quality video evidence. The company manufactures its products at its Texas headquarters.

Motorola Solutions completes acquisition of Avigilon for a video surveillance

Motorola Solutions completed its previously announced acquisition of Avigilon, a supplier of advanced security surveillance solutions, for CAD$27.00 per share, valuing the transaction at approximately US$1.0 billion including Avigilon’s net debt.

Avigilon, which is based in Vancouver, British Columbia, holds more than 750 U.S. and Canadian patents related to video surveillance. The company's portfolio includes video analytics, network video management software and hardware, surveillance cameras, and access control solutions. Avigilon products are used by a range of commercial and government customers including critical infrastructure, airports, government facilities, public venues, healthcare centers and retail.

Avigilon will operate as a separate unit of Motorola Solutions, with James Henderson, president and chief operating officer for Avigilon, reporting to Jack Molloy, executive vice president, worldwide sales and services for Motorola Solutions.

Motorola Solutions acquires Kodiak for PTT over cellular

Motorola Solutions has  Kodiak Networks, a privately held provider of broadband push-to-talk (PTT) for commercial customers. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Motorola Solutions said Kodiak adds a complementary, carrier-integrated PTT-over-cellular solution to its existing mission-critical WAVE PTT portfolio. WAVE connects disparate networks to enable communication between smartphones, radios and computers via wireless or wireline broadband.

Kodiak was founded in 2001 and is headquartered in Plano, Texas.

“Acquiring Kodiak Networks is another step in building Motorola Solutions’ communications and collaboration software suite and establishing annual recurring revenue streams,” said Bruce Brda, executive vice president, Products and Solutions, Motorola Solutions. “Kodiak’s broadband PTT software expands our offerings for mobile network operators, especially in commercial markets, and complements our software and carrier capabilities.”

Motorola Solution Inaugurates New HQ in Downtown Chicago

Motorola Solutions inaugurated its new global headquarters in downtown Chicago at 500 West Monroe in the West Loop. The headquarters will house the company’s chief technology office, ventures group, software engineering team and corporate functions, as well an innovation center showcasing the products and services depended on by the company’s 100,000 customers worldwide.

The first teams of employees moved into the new building today, which will house six floors by mid-September. The move marks a return to Chicago for the company, which was founded in 1928 on Harrison Street.

“The story of Chicago and Motorola Solutions goes back nearly 90 years, and today we are writing a new chapter at their new home, right here in the City of Chicago,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said. “This new headquarters will employ hundreds of people and give Motorola Solutions the tools they need to grow for generations to come – access to talent, transportation and capital.”

“Where you work matters, and today we’re opening our new collaborative workspace in the heart of Chicago. We look forward to welcoming our employees as well as attracting new talent that is critical to our company’s future,” said Motorola Solutions Chairman and CEO Greg Brown. “It’s an honor to join Chicago’s thriving tech community as a pillar of innovation, ideas and opportunity.”

Motorola Solutions also maintains its current Americas Sales Headquarters at 224 S. Michigan Ave. (300 employees) and an engineering facility in Schaumburg, Ill., (1,600 employees).

Motorola Solutions Acquires Emergency CallWorks for NG9-1-1 Software

Motorola Solutions announced its acquisition of Emergency CallWorks, a privately-held developer of Next-Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) call-taking software for public safety. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Emergency CallWorks, which is based in Birmingham, Alabama, offers a helps police, fire and emergency medical teams better manage critical incidents by allowing more information to flow seamlessly from the public, through a 911 network and command center, to emergency personnel. The solution can be deployed either as an on-site implementation or as a remote hosted solution, making it scalable to even the smallest public safety agencies, which enables access to the latest technology at a predictable price point. Emergency CallWorks was founded in 2006.

“Smart public safety starts with accurately routing and addressing emergency calls from the community,” said Bob Schassler, executive vice president, Solutions and Services, Motorola Solutions. “Emergency CallWorks’ solution provides an advanced, next-generation version of 911 that will be capable of moving beyond voice-only calls by processing multimedia information into the call flow. Its browser-based workstation architecture eliminates proprietary 911 switching hardware, simplifies operations and provides cost-effective system implementation, allowing for remote monitoring, service and support, with continuous delivery of innovative new features.”

Motorola Solutions Acquires Developer of PTT over Broadband Software

Motorola Solutions has acquired Twisted Pair Solutions, a privately-held developer of push-to-talk over broadband applications for secure, real-time communication anywhere, on any device. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Twisted Pair, which is based in Seattle, offers a "WAVE" application for integrating smartphones, tablets and PCs into a secure communication solution that provide with voice, text messaging, location and presence.  Twisted Pair’s WAVE Desktop, Dispatch and Web applications provide customers choices in their dispatch communications and unify communications among teams of workers, whether in their office or mobile. The WAVE communications platform provides interoperability to extend land mobile radios, PBXs and other communication systems, allowing teams of employees, whether mobile or in their offices, to effectively communicate through voice, text and data – securely, reliably and in real time – regardless of network, carrier, protocol or device.

Motorola Completes Acquisition of Psion

Motorola Solutions' offer to acquire Psion Plc., a supplier of ruggedized mobile devices, for $200 million in cash has been accepted.  Psion, which is based in London and has operations in Toronto, has been a pioneer in ruggedized mobile computing products and their application in industrial segments around the world. The company was founded in 1980 and was a pioneer in personal digital organizers but exited the consumer market in 2001.

Motorola Solutions Invests in Fixmo for Security Compliance

Motorola Solutions has made a strategic investment in Fixmo, a start-up offering mobile security, compliance and risk management solutions for the public and private sectors. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Fixmo’s flagship products, Fixmo Sentinel and Fixmo SafeZone, help organizations manage their secure mobile devices, maintain system integrity, protect their corporate data and prove policy compliance.
