Optica and COBO to host Co-Packaged and Pluggable Optics Summit

Optica (formerly OSA)  and the Consortium for On-Board Optics (COBO) will host the Co-Packaged and Pluggable Optics Industry Summit at the DuPont Silicon Valley Technology and Innovation Center in Sunnyvale, California on 26-27 October 2022. 

The in-person-only event will feature presentations from Microsoft, Google, Meta, Intel, NVIDIA, Arista, Juniper Networks, Marvell, Infinera, Broadcom, Corning, MACOM, Molex, HG Genuine, Ayar Labs, and more.

Optica and COBO have partnered to accelerate discussions on how photonic solutions address global bandwidth predictions of 30% in 2022. Leading data center operators report that today's compute offerings do not meet the demands of expected workloads of the near future and require that photonics technologies evolve quickly, cost-effectively, and greenly.

"We are in a transition period," said Jose Pozo, Optica chief technology officer. "As the global bandwidth pressure grows on datacom providers, major corporations need to ensure key photonics technologies are as close as possible to the processing units inside data centers."

Microsoft previews Azure Orbital Cloud Access via Starlink and SES

Microsoft is previewing a service called Azure Orbital Cloud Access that extends Microsoft Cloud via satellite access and has demonstrated a fully virtualized iDirect modem. Azure Orbital Cloud Access enables low-latency (1-hop) access to the cloud from anywhere on the planet.

Specifically, Azure Orbital Cloud Access delivers prioritized network traffic through SpaceX’s Starlink connectivity and Azure edge devices, providing customers with access to Microsoft cloud services anywhere Starlink operates. 

Microsoft says Azure Orbital Cloud Access will manage the entire solution for customers, charging on a simple monthly subscription basis and a pay-as-you-go satellite communications consumption model.The product also natively integrates with SD-WAN technology from Juniper Networks, which enables customers to prioritize connectivity between fiber, cellular, and satellite communications networks. The Azure Orbital Cloud Access Preview is currently available for Azure Government customers. 

Microsoft Azure Orbital Ground Station is now in general availability.

In addition, SES and Microsoft announced new joint satellite communications virtualization program.

SES is the Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) network partner for Microsoft Azure orbital. The partnership involves the co-location of ground stations of O3b mPOWER, SES’s second-generation MEO constellation, with Azure Cloud regions. This will ensure customers one-hop and direct cloud access for secure and reliable delivery of Azure services and applications.  The new program will create the world’s first fully virtualized satellite communications ground network by focusing on software-defined hubs, customer edge terminals, new virtual network functions, edge cloud applications, etc. This virtualization will align cloud and satellite network architectures and enable 5G technology to be used in commercial satellite networks.

SES signs on as MEO satellite partner for Microsoft Azure Orbital

 SES signed a multi-year agreement with Microsoft to be an Azure Orbital partner as well as to accelerate and expand the use of Microsoft Azure across its operations and jointly develop cloud-based video and data connectivity managed services.

Under the arrangement, SES will be co-locating and managing O3b mPOWER gateways with Microsoft Azure locations so its customers are always only “one-hop” away from their Azure cloud services anywhere in the world. More specifically, SES will be the medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite partner for Microsoft Azure Orbital. The two companies also agreed to make joint investments in Azure Orbital ground stations for the MEO and Earth Observation segments that SES will deploy and manage based on its industry expertise, with the first Earth Observation gateway being located at Quincy, Western Australia.

The Microsoft partnership is expected to bring improved network performance for SES customers as they route over Microsoft’s global network and inject value-added, cloud-based managed services such as enhanced security, SD-WAN, and other network functions into the service chain.

AWS Local Zones open in Taipei and Delhi

AWS announced the opening of Local Zones in Taipei (Taiwan) and Delhi (India)

Applications hosted in a Local Zone benefit from very low (single-digit millisecond) latency access to EC2 instances and other AWS services. Local Zones also give AWS customers additional choices regarding data residency, giving them the ability to store and process sensitive data (often financial or personal in nature) in-country. However, Local Zones offer a subset of the services offered at AWS Regions and Availability Zones.

AWS pursues Local Zones strategy to cut latency

 AWS announced the availability of Local Zones in Boston, Houston, and Miami to serve latency-sensitive and throughput-sensitive workloads. The first AWS Local Zone was previously opened in Los Angeles. Equinix expands to Indonesia

Equinix announced its expansion to INDONESIA with plans for an approximately $74 million International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in the heart of Jakarta. 

The eight-story facility is scheduled to open by the second half of 2024, expected to provide more than 1,600 cabinets and more than 5,300 square meters of colocation space when fully built. Located in Jakarta's Central Business District and in close proximity to major internet exchanges, the new IBX data center will provide Indonesian businesses and foreign businesses operating in Indonesia with the digital infrastructure and vibrant ecosystems for optimal performance.

Most recently, Equinix entered Chile and Peru with a total of five IBX data centers, with an enterprise value estimated at approximately $735 million. The company has also completed its acquisition of West African data center and connectivity solutions provider MainOne for an enterprise value of $320 million.

In Asia-Pacific, Equinix announced an initial investment of over $86 million to build Equinix's third IBX data center in Mumbai and an investment of over $64 million for its first IBX data center in Chennai.

Equinix now has 248 data centers across 71 metros and 32 countries.

AMD says PC sales weak, data center sales on target

AMD released preliminary financial results, saying its third quarter revenue is expected to be approximately $5.6 billion, an increase of 29% year-over-year. The company previously expected revenue to increase approximately 55% year-over-year at the mid-point of guidance, citing lower than expected Client segment revenue resulting from reduced processor shipments due to a weaker than expected PC market and significant inventory correction actions across the PC supply chain.

Revenue for the Data Center, Gaming, and Embedded segments each increased significantly year-over-year in-line with the company’s expectations.

Gross margin is expected to be approximately 42% and non-GAAP() gross margin is expected to be approximately 50%. AMD previously expected non-GAAP gross margin to be approximately 54%. The gross margin shortfall to expectations was primarily due to lower revenue driven by lower Client processor unit shipments and average selling price (ASP). In addition, the third quarter results are expected to include approximately $160 million of charges primarily for inventory, pricing, and related reserves in the graphics and client businesses.

IBM to invest $20 billion in New York State over 10 years

IBM plans to invest $20 billion in New York state over the next 10 years to support its work in semiconductors, computers, hybrid cloud, artificial intelligence and quantum computers.

IBM's Poughkeepsie site has helped the country embrace the transformative power of technology since 1941, from manufacturing armaments during World War II to developing and building the latest generation mainframe computers. The site also is home to IBM's first Quantum Computation Center –where a large number of real quantum computers run in the cloud. IBM's vision is for Poughkeepsie to become a global hub of the company's quantum computing development, just as it is today for mainframes.

Orange Business Services delivers SD-WAN for Norauto

Norauto, a leading automotive service company in France that provides multi-brand maintenance, equipment and repairs, selected Orange Business Services to upgrade its network infrastructure to SD-WAN, supporting its digital transformation.

Credo intros 112G Retimer DSP with 1.6 Tbps capacity

Credo introduced a 112G LR (Long Reach) DSP  with 1.6 Tbps of retiming capacity for supporting port speeds of 1.6T, 800G, 400G, 100G and down to 10G.

The new "Screaming Eagle" DSP is a third generation Credo 112G retimer and supports LR+ channels of 40dB+, enabling up to 1.6Tbps throughput in a single package. It adds a programmable MR (medium reach) mode to reduce SerDes power by 20% for C2M (chip-to-module) and VSR (very short reach) applications. Screaming Eagle 1.6T ships in a 23x23mm package, the industry’s smallest form factor for line card applications.

Saudi Arabia's stc forms a new infrastructure company

Saudi Arabia's stc Group launched Center3 Company, a new company that will be the owner of the digital infrastructure assets owned by stc Group, including data centers, submarine cables, international points of presence, and internet exchange points.

Center3 Company aims to be the digital regional center for the Middle East and North Africa, operating a group of carrier-neutral data centers and a provider of international communication for the telecommunications sector through a submarine fiber-optic network. It aims to develop digital businesses and enhance investment opportunities in international communication services and data centers by providing the latest communication, hosting technologies and raising the capacity of data centers to meet the needs of the Asian, European, and African markets, and the rest of the world.

The inauguration took place in the presence of H.R.H Prince Mohammad bin Khalid Al Abdullah Al-Faisal, Chairman of the Board of Directors of stc Group, His Excellency the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Eng. Abdullah Alswaha, and a number of excellencies and senior executives of stc Group.

Orange outlines energy saving plan in France

Orange outlined the following energy to reduce electricity consumption in France:

  • During peak consumption, Orange will cut 5 to 10% of its instantaneous electricity consumption for one hour per day. Switching to electric battery for several thousand fixed network installations will help save up to 20 MW, i.e. the instantaneous consumption of a medium-sized city with 40,000 inhabitants. These energy efficiency measures will have no negative impact on users. 
  • The temperature in offices is now set at 19°C. On days when there are few visitors, Orange proposes closing some quieter work spaces to reduce their electricity and heating consumption.
  • Since September 1, 2022, window lighting at all Orange stores in France is switched off 30 minutes after closing at the latest.
  • During peak consumption, SMS will be sent to Orange employees and customers to raise awareness of environmentally-friendly actions, like switching off their boxes when not in use; switching to Wi-Fi at home, or enabling standby mode for their Livebox and TV set-top box. Extended standby mode on the Livebox 6 can reduce energy consumption by 95%.
  • As a signatory of the Ecowatt charter, Orange will also display an electricity status report on the Orange TV home page, allowing every TV viewer to see the amount of electricity available in France.

Christel Heydemann, Orange CEO, explains: “In an uncertain geopolitical and economic context, we share the French government's concerns and we have developed a concrete plan to support the national energy saving initiative. By offering to cut consumption at several thousand technical sites for one hour, we will reduce our instantaneous power requirements by up to 10%, without impacting the service offered to users. But I must point out that networks are crucial for an effective society. We must work together to avoid load shedding measures this winter”.

Qunnect raises $8M for quantum-secure networking

Qunnect, a start-up based in the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York City, announced its Series A financing of over $8 million for development of quantum-secure networking technology.

Spearheaded by CEO Dr. Noel Goddard and founders Dr. Mehdi Namazi and Mael Flament, Qunnect is developing quantum-secure networking technology designed for scalable deployment on existing telecom fiber infrastructure. 

Qunnect's products include an entangled photon source with compatibility to atomic-based devices and a high fidelity quantum memory, are key enablers for applications in quantum sensing and computing.  The company said the new funding will be used to further develop their product suite, scale manufacturing, and launch a multi-node R&D quantum network testbed to demonstrate entanglement distribution protocols. This network, connected to existing fiber optic cable in New York City, will be the first of its kind in the US.

Broadband Forum posts 5G Transport Architecture report

Broadband Forum has released its technical report 5G Transport Architecture and Requirements (TR-521), offering recommendations for architecture and equipment requirements to provide transport networks suitable for supporting 5G mobile radio access network (RAN).

“5G cannot perform without the support of well founded transport networks. These transport networks must be prepared to support the vast number of use cases and services that can be realized with 5G with features including higher capacity, enhanced performance, and high reliability,” said David Sinicrope, Broadband Forum’s Access and Transport Architecture (ATA) Work Area Director. “The publication of TR-521 provides a functional reference architecture, and equipment requirements for transport networks supporting 5G fronthaul and backhaul. It benefits both operators in specifying what is expected of the transport equipment they procure and transport equipment vendors in deciding what to implement and how it will be used.”

Broadband Forum has also released the specification, Mobile – Transport Network Slice Instance Management Interfaces (MMI) (TR-522) to address, as the name suggests, transport network slice management interfaces.

5G end-to-end slicing facilitates multiple logical self-contained networks on top of a common physical infrastructure platform. In realizing a 5G end-to-end slice, the 3GPP management system needs to be aligned with the corresponding transport network management to ensure that the desired performance, functionality and connectivity is fulfilled.

TR-522 addresses the interfaces between 3GPP Management System and the Transport Network Managers helping to provide this alignment. Specifically, the work defines interfaces to support the configuration, assurance, monitoring and reconfiguration of 5G network slices in 5G networks.

Both specifications, along with accompanying Market Reports (MR-521.1 and MR-522) which explain the motivation for the work, have been completed by Broadband Forum’s Mobile Transport and Routing Project Stream within the Access & Transport Architecture (ATA) Work Area. The Mobile Transport and Routing Project Stream is responsible for the Forum’s mobile transport and routing architectural work, including the control, management, and data planes. These architectures leverage new industry technology and practices, while protecting the investment in deployed networks.

Verizon lands $1.58B contract to update U.S. embassies

Verizon has been awarded a new Enterprise Infrastructure Solutions (EIS) contract to modernize the global communications infrastructure and provide IT services for each of the Department of State’s (DOS) U.S. embassies, consulars, and other key locations around the globe.

The contract, worth $1.58 billion over the next 10 years, includes implementation and management of network solutions for the Department’s non-domestic footprint, including Asia, Africa, the Middle East and South America. This includes technology and network infrastructure for embassies in nearly 260 locations across the globe.

ITU elects Doreen Bogdan-Martin as Secretary-General

Member states of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) have elected Doreen Bogdan-Martin of the United States to serve as the organization's next Secretary-General for a four year term. She replaces Houlin Zhao of China in the ITU's top leadership role. She will begin her term on 1 January 2023.

Bogdan-Martin will be the first woman to lead ITU, which was established in 1865 and became a United Nations specialized agency in 1947.

Ms Bogdan-Martin has held leadership positions in international telecommunications policy for over two decades, including the last three years as Director of the ITU's Telecommunications Development Bureau. In her candidate statements, said she would work to achieve "digital connectivity that is safe, inclusive, and affordable."

Taiwan's AIROHA ships XGS-PON chip

AIROHA, a subsidiary of Taiwan-based MediaTek,confirmed that is XGS-PON chips are now being used in customer premise equipment (CPE) by a U.S. broadband provider.

AIROHA says its XGS-PON ICs enable symmetric 8 Gbps upload and download speeds with 3ms low latency.

AIROHA has more than 1,100 staff coming from MediaTek's former IoT department and a number of IC design houses merged or purchased by MediaTek.

Micron to build megafab in New York

Micron will build a "megafab" in Clay, New York (near Syracuse) to produce lead-edge memory chips in high volume using the most advanced semiconductor manufacturing processes and tools, including extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography

Micron said it will invest $20 billion in the project by 2030 and up to $100 billion over the next 20-plus years. The company is looking to secure support from the recently-passed CHiPS legislation.

Micron’s central New York site could eventually include four 600,000 square foot cleanrooms, accounting for a total of 2.4 million square feet of cleanroom space – the size of approximately 40 U.S. football fields. Site preparation work will start in 2023 with construction beginning in 2024.

ADVA launches network security company

ADVA launched a specialist security company committed to protecting mission-critical communication networks from cyberattacks.

With its own IT infrastructure and secure data center facilities in Germany, Adva Network Security will collaborate with national security organizations to ensure end-to-end network protection that meets the highest industry requirements, including safeguarding data against strikes from quantum computers.

ADVA said the new company will complement its own networking technology portfolio, building on ADVA’s unique portfolio of security technologies, including its optical transport solution that was the first on the market to be approved by the German Federal Ministry for Information Security (BSI) for the transmission of up to VS-V classified data, followed by ADVA’s Ethernet encryption solution at the end of 2022. 

Adva Network Security solutions inherit ADVA’s NIST 140-2 certification for various products, ensuring that encryption meets the strict demands of American security authorities. The company is also in the process of achieving FIPS 140-3 certification. What’s more, the company offers high-bandwidth quantum-safe transport, enabling customers to apply future-proof security solutions to their infrastructure and guaranteeing that valuable information cannot be seized and stored today, ready to be deciphered when large-scale quantum computers become readily accessible.

UK's Hyperoptic to deploy Nokia’s 800GE-capable routers

Hyperoptic, the UK’s largest exclusively full fiber internet service provider, will deploy Nokia’s 800GE-capable 7750 SR-s routers, which are powered by its FP5 routing silicon.

FP5 allows the delivery of more than three times more capacity in the same space and power envelope as the Nokia FP4 hardware, currently in Hyperoptic’s IP network. The deployment of FP5 is one of the first in Europe. 

Nokia said its system design innovation ensures that both the FP5 and FP4 can concurrently operate at line rate in the same SR-s system for economic, deterministic scaling of capacity along with extending the network life of deployed systems.
