ECOC22: Source Photonics hits 2.5 million shipments for EML chips

Source Photonics has surpassed shipment of more than 2.5 million pieces of 28G and 53G high speed EML laser chips for data centers and optical transmission applications. In addition to high end EML chips, Source Photonics exceeds the shipments of over 100 million pieces of 2.5G, 10G and 25G FP/DFB, and 10G EML chips for PON access and wireless fronthaul markets.

Source Photonics began production shipments of 53G EMLs with 100G single lambda PAM4 based 100G/400G transceivers when 400G industry adoption started to take off from 2021. It has undergone a successful introduction and qualification by many of our leading customers and partners throughout 2020. Empowered by the internally developed 53G EML chips and 100G PAM4 technology, Source Photonics has entered volume production of a series of product families which include 100G DR1/FR1/LR1/ER1 QSFP28, 400G DR4/FR4/LR4 QSFP56-DD, and 800G DR8/2xFR4 QSFP-DD800/OSFP.

“We are excited to announce this key milestone of shipping 2,500,000 high speed EML chips as it's both an extraordinary achievement for optics market and for Source Photonics. Today’s announcement further strengthens our commitment and leadership in large-scale production capacity of higher speed EML chip and transceiver products.” said John Wang, CEO of Source Photonics, “Vertical integration remains Source Photonics’ business model and core competitiveness. More than 90% of transceiver products transition to use our own optics chips now, including the newest 800G products under production. The company continues to invest in leading edge technology and will lead the transition from 53G to 100G EMLs for future products.”

The next logical step is to support 8x200G design of 1.6T modules. Source Photonics has embarked the development of 200G PAM4 EML chips to its market leading EML portfolio for achieving modulation bandwidth of over 60GHz. And technical feasibility of operating 200G per lambda PAM4 signaling has been demonstrated to run 2km and 10km fiber distances. It is foreseeable to expect the product commercialization of 1.6T modules will happen in 2023.

Source Photonics launches 50G PAM4 SFP56 transceivers

Source Photonics is demonstrating its 50G SFP56 products with industry partners at this week's OFC 2022 in San Diego.

Source Photonics' 50G PAM4 SFP56 product portfolio for 5G fronthaul networks levergages in-house vertically integrated optics and ICs. The modules support interoperability with previous generations of 25G SFP28 and 10G SFP+ optical transceivers. Both modules comply with the corresponding 50GBASE-R specifications as defined in the IEEE standards and offer 50G PAM4 electrical and optical interfaces.

The company notes that when the 5G spectrum bandwidth exceeds 100M, one base station requires 6x 25Gb/s eCPRI interfaces and a total of 12x 25Gb/s SFP28 optical modules. The 50G SFP56 achieves 50% port savings by upgrading the rate of one transceiver to 50Gb/s, creating flexibility for further improvement of wireless forward bandwidth.

To meet the most pressing bandwidth requirements of global customers, Source Photonics is one of the first in the world to introduce 50G LR and FR PAM4 SFP56 optical modules, which support 10km and 2km respectively. The product meets the range of industrial temperature applications with power consumption as low as 1.5W. This series of products use the 25G DFB laser developed in house by Source Photonics to provide customers with low power consumption, short latency, and cost-effective transceiver solutions for 5G fronthaul networks.

Source Photonics has conducted in-depth cooperation with the world's leading 5G equipment manufacturers, and the qualification is progressing smoothly. The 50G LR SFP56 and 50G FR SFP56 are the most urgent general-purpose applications today.

The development of 50G Bidi SFP56, 50G WDM SFP56 and other related products has also been launched, which will provide customers with more diversified, more flexible, and more cost-effective products.

ECOC 2018: Source Photonics and Huawei showcase PAM4-based transceivers

At ECOC 2018, Source Photonics is partnering with Huawei in showcasing 50G and 400G optical transceivers based on PAM4 technology.

The companies are participating in the Ethernet Alliance Interoperability Demonstration, which consists of multiple 400G and 50G links among participating network and test equipment manufacturers including Huawei.

Source Photonics said it is working with Huawei in providing operators an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient technology. The companies took the initiative this year in driving the development of optical modules based on 50G PAM4 technology. The PAM4 technology coupled with faster Baud Rates and higher density transceiver types are enabling 400G which is known to be key in migrating to higher speed networks.

“We took the lead worldwide when we successfully demonstrated interoperability of the first 400G QSFP-DD LR8 and 400G CFP8 LR8 transceivers at OFC 2018 in March. Source Photonics continues to take initiative as it collaborates with Huawei in developing IEEE optical standards for 50G PAM4 technology,” said Andy Xiao, PLM.

Source Photonics’ 400G CFP8 supports the IEEE 400GBASE-LR8 optical standard and 400GAUI-16 electrical interface. The module operates from 0°C to 70°C and complies with the CFP8 MSA and allows connections of up to 10km. The 50G LR QSFP28 uses a DML laser with mature TO package as a cost-effective solution for network migration.  This product will be available for purchase this month and will also be key in enabling 5G commercialization and other services requiring higher network bandwidth.

ECOC 2018: 5G requires fiber network infrastructure - Source Photonics

There may be a vast number of opportunities for mobile fronthaul and backhaul on the horizon but improvements in protocols, standards and technology will also need to be made, according to Supriyo Dey, Senior Director Product Line Management at Source Photonics, speaking on the opening day of the ECOC 2018 Exhibition, taking place in Rome, Italy.

Dey commented: “While an exciting era of unprecedented opportunity is almost here in the shape of 5G, it comes with a set of challenges for the whole industry. The advent of this technology is undeniably huge, but there’s a real challenge for those who are hungry to develop its capabilities to match their expectations in terms of performance. Applications such as 3D video, augmented reality, UHD screens, self-driving cars and smart cities to name a few will need to be supported by mobile front and backhaul.

“With these advances in capabilities come new requirements -, up to 10Gb/s data rate to support high quality video, ultra-reliable and low latency communication for autonomous vehicles and massive node communications for them Internet of things.

“The current 4G optical fronthaul and backhaul architecture will not be adequate to support these new applications. While several optical fronthaul and backhaul solutions have been proposed, we have yet to see a clear winner.”

Dey’s observations were delivered at the ECOC18 Exhibition’s Market Focus, as part of an agenda that tackled topics ranging from FTTX evolution and next-generation data centers to optics as an enabler for 5G.

Source Photonics is also showcasing some of its latest products at the exhibition in the form of live demos.

This includes a demonstration with equipment testing experts Ixia, of its 400G QSFP-DD LR8 transceiver. In addition, the company will also demonstrate its 25G SFP28 LR Lite which supports CPRI wireless and 25GBASE-LR applications.

Source Photonics highlights the Evolutionary Phase of 100G Optical Transmission at the 2018 NGON and DCI Conference

Source Photonics will be presenting a talk about the next evolutionary phase of 100G optical transmission at the Next Generation Optical Networking (NGON) and Data Centre Interconnect (DCI) conference in Nice, France on June 26-28, 2018.

Supriyo Dey, Source Photonics’ Senior Director of Product Management, will discuss the current and future trends of innovative optical technology solutions on June 27, at 5:30 pm, CEST. He will explore how high-speed transceivers will need to evolve to meet the requirements of cloud data centers, 5G and edge networks.
