KDDI implemented Wind River Studio for its O-RAN–compliant 5G stand-alone virtualized base station technology, which has recently launched on its commercial network.

Wind River Studio provides a cloud-native platform for the development, deployment, operations, and servicing of mission-critical intelligent systems. Its cloud infrastructure capabilities include a fully cloud-native, Kubernetes- and container-based architecture, based on the StarlingX open source project, for distributed edge networks at scale. Addressing the complexities of deploying and managing cloud-native vRAN infrastructure, Studio delivers a foundation for a geographically distributed, managed solution able to simplify Day 1 and Day 2 operations by providing single-pane-of-glass, zero touch automated management of thousands of nodes, no matter their physical location.

Wind River acquires Particle Design for UI/UX

Wind River completed its previously-announced acquisition of UI/UX design company Particle Design.  Financial terms were not disclosed.

Telefónica validates Wind River Titanium Cloud

Telefónica completed its validation of Wind River Titanium Cloud as a Virtualized Infrastructure Manager (VIM) for NFV workloads, in line with the multi VIM paradigm of their UNICA initiative.  The multi-phase evaluation included functional testing of the Titanium Cloud virtualization platform. Test teams also validated the integration of Titanium Cloud with OSM orchestration to prove interoperability. Additionally, Telefónica is running use case trials, including testing virtual RAN solutions hosted on Titanium Cloud.

Wind River said Titanium Cloud is deployment-ready and fully compatible with open standards such the Open Source MANO (OSM) orchestration project.

Intel spins out Wind River

Intel has agreed to sell its Wind River subsidiary to TPG, a global alternative asset firm. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Wind River noted that its software "runs the computing systems of the most important modern infrastructure, including manufacturing plants, medical devices, aircraft, railway, automobiles, and communications networks."

“This acquisition will establish Wind River as a leading independent software provider uniquely positioned to advance digital transformation within critical infrastructure segments with our comprehensive edge to cloud portfolio,” said Jim Douglas, Wind River President. “At the same time, TPG will provide Wind River with the flexibility and financial resources to fuel our many growth opportunities as a standalone software company that enables the deployment of safe, secure, and reliable intelligent systems.”

Wind River President, Jim Douglas, and his existing executive management team will lead the newly independent Wind River after the transaction closes.

Wind River Intros NFV Platform for vCPE

Wind River introduced a new Titanium Server CPE platform to speed the deployment of early Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) use cases such as virtualized customer premises equipment (vCPE).

The company said its Titanium Server CPE platform enables service providers to deploy cost-sensitive NFV applications such as a virtual business CPE (vBCPE) on only two servers. Each server runs the full set of carrier grade compute, control, and storage functions, while working to deliver best-in-class virtual network function (VNF) performance to maximize the number of users supported per server and thereby also maximize OPEX savings. At the same time, Titanium Server CPE helps service providers to maintain full carrier grade uptime for their vBCPE services, which enables them to minimize any revenue impact resulting from Service Level Agreement (SLA) penalties triggered by service downtime.

The vBCPE design, which runs on the Wind River Titanium Server™ NFV infrastructure (NFVI) platform, supports virtual network functions (VNFs) from each of these partners.

Wind River introduced an automotive software platform for the command center of the connected car.

The Wind River Helix Cockpit, which is a GENIVI-aligned, Linux Yocto Project–based software platform, incorporates technologies from consumer-oriented embedded devices such as infotainment, telematics, and digital cluster systems; safety-oriented systems such as advanced driver assist systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving systems; and cloud-based development tools and enhancements for the applications.

Key features for Cockpit include the following:

• Connectivity framework: Integrated connectivity solutions help to extend and bridge the car experience to the IoT devices and landscape, including the cloud.
• Firmware and software over-the-air (OTA) management: Cockpit includes the ability to manage and update software over-the-air throughout its lifecycle.

Intel Intros New #IoT Platform

Intel introduced a new IoT Platform reference architecture and new hardware and software products or the Internet of Things (IoT) marketplace. The products include new Intel Quark processors for IoT, free and simple operating systems with a comprehensive cloud suite from Wind River. The company said it is focused on enabling the broad Intel ecosystem to simply develop, secure and integrate smart things.

Intel said its new Quark SE SoC  and the Intel Quark microcontroller D1000 and D2000 feature powerful processing in an energy-conscious envelope. The new products are in an ideal package for IoT, offering extended temperature for demanding environments and have long life reliability for peace of mind. The Intel Quark SE SoC for IoT offers an integrated sensor hub as well as pattern matching technology to deliver real-time insights from complex sensor data at the very edge of IoT.

Wind River Releases Benchmarks for Pattern Matching Engine for NFV

Wind River announced that its high-speed pattern matching software is able to achieve a benchmark of over 36 Gbps on Intel Atom processors and exceeding 280 Gbps on high-end Intel Xeon–based platform.

The Wind River Content Inspection Engine provides the high-speed pattern matching that enables security appliance vendors to scale security performance and intelligence across the network from low-end to high-end platforms. Software pattern matching on Intel architecture enables the optimized performance and scalability needed for resource-intensive Network Function Virtualization (NFV) applications. The Content Inspection Engine, which runs entirely in software, is a high-speed embedded software pattern matching solution that can match large groups of regular expressions against blocks or streams of data. The engine can also search for multiple patterns simultaneously, even when the streams of data are scattered in different memory locations.

Wind River said its Content Inspection Engine, also sold as Hyperscan, now delivers pattern matching throughput of over 36 Gbps on the Intel Atom processor C2000 series, using tier-1 original equipment manufacturer (OEM) IPS patterns to scan real-world HTTP traffic. It is a pattern matching library designed to drop into a vendor’s system software release and be used for an entire product line, without requiring any additional software or hardware resources. With scanning performance on high-end Intel Xeon–based platforms exceeding 280 Gbps, these benchmarks demonstrate Content Inspection Engine’s ability to deliver scalable performance, making it an ideal pattern matching technology for low-end to high-end security platforms and NFV-based solutions.

In September 2013, Intel agreed to acquire Sensory Networks, a start-up which specializes in pattern matching and acceleration software technology, for approximately US$20 million. Sensory Networks developed "HyperScan" high-speed, L4-L7 pattern matching software that accelerates deep packet inspection applications running on Intel processors.  The company was founded in Sydney Australia and was headed by Sab Gosal.

In 2012, Sensory reported that its HyperScan library delivers DPI throughput of 160Gbps with linear scalability, based on an intensive benchmark of HyperScan on a dual-socket platform (8-core, 16 threads per socket) using the new Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 family and Intel C604 chipset, scanning against a tier-1 commercial IPS signature set.

Wind River Launches Titanium Ecosystem for NFV

Wind River launched its Titanium Cloud ecosystem for service providers and telecom equipment manufacturers (TEMs) deploying infrastructure based on network functions virtualization (NFV).

Initial members include Brocade, GENBAND, Metaswitch Networks, Nakina Systems, and Overture.

Wind River said its ecosystem program helps ensure interoperability of solutions based in  its Carrier Grade Communications Server, which is an integrated portfolio of software elements that enables NFV infrastructure to achieve the carrier grade reliability required for telecom networks. The company said its Carrier Grade Communications Server enables service providers to maintain six-nines reliability as they transition to virtualized infrastructure, allowing them to meet “always on” expectations.

Wind River Delivers Accelerated vSwitch Optimized for NFV

Wind River announced a new performance benchmark for its accelerated virtual switch (vSwitch) integrated within Wind River Carrier Grade Communications Server, which is designed for network functions virtualization (NFV).

Wind River said its accelerated vSwitch can deliver 12 million packets per second to guest virtual machines (VMs) using only two processor cores on an industry-standard server platform, in a real-world use case involving bidirectional traffic. This performance represents 20 times that of the standard Open vSwitch (OVS) software used in typical enterprise data centers. Providing unlimited scalability when instantiated on multiple cores, this industry-leading performance is achieved using up to 33% fewer CPU resources than other commercial solutions, with no requirement for specific hardware acceleration.

“As a key element in our Carrier Grade Communications Server, our accelerated vSwitch was designed from the ground-up to incorporate the Carrier Grade features that are critically important for telecom networks that must deliver six 9s reliability,” said Mike Langlois, general manager of the communications business for Wind River. "For example, the accelerated vSwitch provides fast convergence during live migration of VMs, while minimizing the impact of dirty page updates. To allow for optimum resource allocation, it provides deterministic processing performance without the jitter of over 10% exhibited by the standard Open vSwitch.
