T-Mobile US aims for net-zero emission by 2040

T-Mobile committed to achieve net-zero emissions across its entire carbon footprint by 2040.

“As we know sustainability is important to our customers and stakeholders, T-Mobile has made great progress in reducing our environmental footprint – and now we're taking even bigger steps to reduce our carbon emissions with a commitment to meeting SBTi’s Net-Zero Standard,” said Mike Sievert, T-Mobile CEO. “We are proud that we are doing our part to create a sustainable future for all – including becoming the first in U.S. wireless to set this bold target. And we hope companies like ours — and the partners and suppliers we work alongside — will join us in setting their own aggressive longer-term goals like these.”

T-Mobile has et a net-zero goal for all three emissions scopes that has been validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) using their Net-Zero Standard – the world’s first framework for company targets that aligns with the latest climate science. This goal covers emission scopes 1 and 2, inclusive of direct emissions from T-Mobile’s operations and facilities, as well as indirect emissions from purchased electricity.

T-Mobile said all remaining indirect scope 3 emissions (the company’s entire footprint!) — including those produced by suppliers, customer device usage, materials and fuel required to ship products, employee travel, and more—which represents roughly two thirds of the company’s carbon footprint.

“While T-Mobile's net-zero goal is a decades-long endeavor, we know how important it is to take definitive actions now to reduce our environmental impact for future generations,” said Janice Kapner, chief communications and corporate responsibility officer at T-Mobile. “We’re committed to measurable progress and holding ourselves accountable with strong governance practices, consistent and transparent reporting, and ongoing collaboration with leading sustainability experts.”

T-Mobile US advances deployment of 1900 MHz mid-band

T-Mobile has achieved its year-end goal of covering 260 million people with Ultra Capacity 5G weeks ahead of schedule. In addition, T-Mobile has now deployed an additional, new layer of 1900 MHz mid-band Ultra Capacity 5G spectrum nationwide.

The operator has also begun lighting up three-carrier aggregation — combining three channels of mid-band 5G spectrum — which in tests produced peak speeds topping 3 Gbps on T-Mobile’s 5G standalone network. Customers with the Samsung Galaxy S22 are leveraging the capability in parts of the network now. Three-carrier aggregation will expand nationwide, and be accessible by additional devices, in the near future.

"We’re rapidly executing on our vision to deliver the highest capacity network this country has ever seen,” said Neville Ray, President of Technology at T-Mobile. “We’ve led in 5G coverage from the beginning, delivering a massive 5G footprint that continues to grow. And with Ultra Capacity 5G, it’s undeniable that T-Mobile customers have access to the most powerful 5G network around.”

T-Mobile expands its 5G home service across MidWest

T-Mobile has expanded the footprint of its 5G Home Internet service across Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin. With this expansion, more than 6 million homes throughout these states, and more than 40 million homes nationwide, are now eligible for T-Mobile Home Internet.

“Access to high-speed internet should be a given, yet millions of people across the country still have little to no choice when it comes to their home broadband. As reliance on internet access has skyrocketed in recent years, many ISPs have continued to underserve customers – year after year,” said Mike Katz, Chief Marketing Officer at T-Mobile. “Today, T-Mobile is taking another step to close the Digital Divide and increase access, bringing our Home Internet service to millions more homes across the Midwest. We’re leveraging the power of 5G to help customers break free from Big Internet.”

T-Mobile 5G Home Internet is priced at $50 a month.

T-Mobile US tests site inspection robot

T-Mobile is testing an inspection robot from InDro Robotics, the leading Canadian air and ground robotics research and development company.

InDro Robotics’ Sentinel was chosen by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to evaluate ground-roving robotics based on its ability to provide 24-hour substation asset inspection and security monitoring. Sentinel was up to the task and ran constant surveillance while streaming all data back to maintenance teams in near real-time using a custom integrated 5G router connected to T-Mobile’s network. The rover was able to follow preset paths while running autonomously and was remotely controlled by operators over 5G. Thanks to its thermal camera, depth sensor and 30x zoom capabilities, InDro Robotics’ Sentinel rover can read and report on gauge levels while monitoring for abnormalities like fluctuating component temperatures, intruders, wildlife hazards, etc.

“Like most robotics, the Sentinel requires an ultra-reliable network with low latency, and T-Mobile 5G proves to be more than capable,” said John Saw, EVP of Advanced & Emerging Technologies at T-Mobile. “The possibilities to use 5G in ways that keep people safe, make life easier and help businesses save money are endless. And we’ve barely scratched the surface of what’s possible.”

“The most important part of monitoring industrial complexes is being able to reliably capture and send data to customer maintenance teams in real-time, no matter where they are or how far away,” said Peter King, Head of Robotic Solutions at InDro Robotics. “Using T-Mobile’s 5G network in EPRI’s evaluation was a no-brainer, and thanks to its reach, we can carry out robot and drone operations in the U.S. nearly anywhere, anytime.”

T-Mobile US and SpaceX plan satellite-to-cellular service

T-Mobile US entered a technology partnership with SpaceX that will create a new network, broadcast from Starlink’s satellites using T-Mobile’s mid-band PCS spectrum nationwide. This will enable satellite-to-phone connectivity using existing phones.

Coverage will initially be over the United States, its territories and parts of the open ocean. T-Mobile US is inviting other global mobile operators to join in a reciprocal coverage agreement.

In a press event at the SpaceX Starbase in Texas, Elon Musk described the technology as a very difficult engineering challenge in part because the Starlink satellites will need to be able discertain individual cell phone signal from their low-earth-orbits. No changes are anticipated for the handsets.

The technology, which is currently working in the labs, will require specialized, very large (25m2) phased-array antennas on the next generation of Starlink satellites.

Elon said each ground cell zone would be quite large and might have 2-4 Mbps of shared bandwidth, enough for basic messaging, apps and some voice.

“We’ve always thought differently about what it means to keep customers connected, and that’s why we’re working with the best to deliver coverage above and beyond anything customers have ever seen before,” said Mike Sievert, CEO of T-Mobile. “More than just a groundbreaking alliance, this represents two industry-shaking innovators challenging the old ways of doing things to create something entirely new that will further connect customers and scare competitors.”

“The important thing about this is that it means there are no dead zones anywhere in the world for your cell phone,” said SpaceX Chief Engineer Elon Musk. “We’re incredibly excited to do this with T-Mobile.”

T-Mobile activates first Voice Over 5G areas

Marking a milestone for its Standalone (SA) 5G network, T-Mobile activated commercial Voice Over 5G (VoNR) service in limited areas of Portland, Ore. and Salt Lake City for customers with the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G. T-Mobile plans to continue its VoNR rollout to many additional areas and 5G smartphones this year.

Customers connected to VoNR will notice slightly faster call set-up times, meaning less delay between the time they dial a number and when the phone starts ringing.

More importantly, T-Mobile says VoNR brings it one step closer to truly unleashing its standalone 5G network because it enables advanced capabilities like network slicing that rely on a continuous connection to a 5G core.

“The commercial launch of the VoNR service is another important step in T-Mobile’s successful 5G deployment,” said Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Business Area Networks at Ericsson. “It demonstrates how we as partners can introduce 5G voice based on the Ericsson solution.”

“We are proud of our partnership with T-Mobile to bring the full capabilities of 5G to customers in the United States,” said Tommi Uitto, President, Nokia Mobile Networks. “Nokia’s radio and core solutions power T-Mobile’s 5G standalone network – and this VoNR deployment is a critical step forward for the new 5G voice ecosystem.”

T-Mobile advances 5G Private Mobile Network

T-Mobile US announced a 5G Private Mobile Network solution set for enterprise customers. The new 5G Advanced Network Solutions has three options: 5G connectivity with a Public Mobile Network, a Hybrid Mobile Network, and a Private Mobile Network. Customers have the option to add compute to each option or use their own compute provider. And each solution is fully managed.

  • Customers who need more reliability and faster download speeds than legacy networks provide can use the T-Mobile Public Network for a wide variety of applications from smart meter applications to tracking optimization and more. T-Mobile’s public network is architected so that data travels less distance from the device to the compute resource and back. That’s a big reason T-Mobile 5G is faster with lower latency.
  • Customers who need even faster speeds, lower latency and/or dedicated reliability can use the Hybrid Mobile Network. This is ideal for things like immersive VR training, computer vision and inspections and other demanding applications, without the expense of a fully private solution.
  • Customers who need the highest speeds, reliability and ultra-low latency can use the Private Mobile Network. A private solution is needed for only the most demanding applications, like industrial automation in a factory or fully autonomous robots.

T-Mobile also announced the following partnerships:

  • T-Mobile and Dell Technologies are developing solutions for enterprise and government customers to embrace the 5G era. T-Mobile’s 5G Private Mobile Network will pair a private 5G network with Dell edge computing technologies, including Dell VxRail hyperconverged infrastructure, so data can be processed, stored and acted upon locally at locations like large business campuses, factories, or universities. It will be available on-premises and be fully managed by T-Mobile.
  • Nokia and T-Mobile are developing 5G Private Mobile Networks and Hybrid Mobile Networks. Nokia’s equipment will be used for T-Mobile’s Hybrid Mobile Network; and for T-Mobile’s Private Mobile Network solution, the Nokia Digital Automation Cloud Private Network solution.
  • Ericsson’s RAN and Core equipment will power T-Mobile’s 5G Advanced Network Solutions.

“As we launch more 5G products and services this year, we’re always thinking about what our customers are telling us they need,” said Mishka Dehghan, Senior Vice President, Strategy, Product, and Solutions Engineering, T-Mobile Business Group. “And, customers are telling us that navigating the complex infrastructure around private networks to produce tangible results is a major pain point. We’re ready to help with partners like Dell Technologies so our customers can stay focused on their business and leave the next-gen connectivity solutions to us.”

T-Mobile US pushes 5G Home Internet

One year after launching its fixed 5G Home Internet service, T-Mobile unveiled a number of incentives to accelerate the business under the slogan "Internet Freedom":

  • Free Test Drive. Customers can try Home Internet for 15 days, worry-free. If they like it, great! If not, return the gateway and owe nothing. It’s 100% On Us. Because it’s wireless, they can keep their old provider while testing the T-Mobile service.
  • T-Mobile will cover break-up fees with the old broadband provider. T-Mobile will cover all early termination fees up to $500.
  • Price Lock. A customer’s price is locked in at just $50 per month, with no monthly taxes or fees, for as long as they are a customer.

Some additional notes from the company's online event:

  •  The T-Mobile 5G Home Internet service is now available to approximately 40 million homes and businesses across the country.

T-Mobile US achieves 100% renewable energy

T-Mobile US announced that it now source 100% of its total electricity usage with renewable energy.  The 100% threshold was achieved by the end of 2021.

The 100% renewable energy target was first announced in 2018. T-Mobile met its RE100 goal through a combination of renewable energy investments, including eight virtual power agreements, 19 retail agreements, one Green Direct program, and unbundled Renewable Energy Certificates that support projects across the country. As a result, the company has invested in enough wind and solar power annually to account for every unit of electricity consumed.
