Acacia unveils 1.2T Single-Chip, Single-Channel Module

Acacia Communications introduced a single-chip coherent module delivering 1.2 Terabit (1.2T) on a single-channel.

Acacia's AC1200-SC2 (SC ‘squared’) coherent module, which is powered by the company's 1.2T Pico DSP chip, supports 100GbE clients, as well as emerging 400GbE clients, across DCI edge, metro, long-haul and submarine distances. Specifically, the single-chip, single-channel AC1200-SC2 supports 3 x 400G transmission using 64QAM modulation for DCI edge applications, as well as 1 x 400G transmission using QPSK modulation for long-haul and submarine applications.

The AC1200-SC2 module leverages Acacia’s 3D shaping technology, which is designed to optimize fiber capacity and reach by filling gaps in margin and spectrum. The module is capable of adapting to any channel spacing up to 150 GHz.


Acacia said that the AC1200-SC2 this fine-tuned adjustment of the modulation order and baud rate provides network operators with the ability to adapt the transmission characteristics to meet the requirements of both greenfield and brownfield deployments. It also provides network operators with a straightforward channel plan roadmap.

Acacia plans to demonstrate its AC1200-SC2 module at the upcoming European Conference on Optical Communications (ECOC) taking place September 22 - 26, 2019 in Dublin, Ireland.

Cisco to acquire Acacia for Coherent Optics

Cisco agreed to acquire Acacia Communications for $70.00 per share in cash, or for approximately $2.6 billion on a fully diluted basis, net of cash and marketable securities. The deal is expected to close during the second half of Cisco's FY2020. Acacia employees will join Cisco's Optical Systems and Optics business within the networking and security business under David Goeckeler.

Acacia, which is headquartered in Maynard, Massachusetts and is publicly traded ((NASDAQ: ACIA), develops, manufactures and sells high-speed coherent optical interconnect products, including digital signal processing / photonic integrated circuit modules, and transceivers.

In May, Acacia posted Q1 2019 revenue of $105.2 million, up 44% year-over-year. GAAP gross margin was 47.4%. GAAP net income was $7.0 million and non-GAAP net income was $15.4 million.

Cisco said Acacia's technology will enrich its optical systems portfolio, allowing customers to transition from chassis-based systems to pluggable technology to simplify operations and reduce network complexities.

On a conference call, Cisco said it is also committed to supporting Acacia's current business including existing and future customers.

Ren tells media that Huawei is willing to negotiate, license 5G patents

Huawei's chairman Ren Zhengfei said the company is willing to license its 5G technology to a Western company in order to create a new competitor in the market, according to an interview published by the Economist. The perpetual license could include Huawei's 5G patents, licences, code, technical blueprints and production know-how.

Separately, in an interview with New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, Ren Zhengfei said Huawei is now willing to negotiate with the U.S. Department of Justice with no pre-conditions.  The article quotes Ren as follows: “If the U.S. reaches out to us in good faith and promises to change their irrational approach to Huawei, then we are open to a dialogue. The U.S. shouldn’t try to destroy Huawei over something trivial. If the U.S. feels we have done something wrong, then we can discuss it in good faith and find a reasonable solution. I think we can accept that approach."

Motorola debuts CBRS push-to-talk radio

Motorola Solutions has introduced the first  push-to-talk radio that lets commercial customers use Citizens’ Broadband Radio Service (CBRS).

The company also confirmed that its CBRS-based private broadband solution, MOTOTRBO Nitro, will participate in the FCC's initial commercial deployment (ICD) phase. This will follow the FCC’s public notice of approval for the ICD phase of CBRS, which is expected in September.

India's Sify selects ADVA for managed Ethernet services

Sify Technologies, the largest ICT service provider in India with more than 10,000 enterprise customers, is deploying the ADVA FSP 150 as the foundation of its new managed Ethernet service.

Cloudflare prices IPO at $15 per share.

San Francisco-based Cloudflare announced the pricing of its initial public offering of its Class A common stock at a price to the public of $15 per share.

Cloudflare is offering 35,000,000 shares of its Class A common stock, plus up to an additional 5,250,000 shares that the underwriters have the option to purchase at the initial public offering price less underwriting discounts. The shares are expected to begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange on September 13, 2019 under the ticker symbol “NET”.

The sale is expected to raise $525 million for the company.

Trifacta Raises $100m for "data wrangling" cloud preparation software

Trifacta, a start-up based in San Francisco, announced $100 million in funding for its "data wrangling" solutions.

Trifacta’s data wrangling platform provides a self-service approach to cleaning and preparing data.

Trifacta claims more than 10,000 organizations using its platform, including IQVIA, Visa, Autodesk, Kaiser Permanente, BNSF, PepsiCo, Stanley Black & Decker, Franklin Templeton, Sumitomo Banking Corporation, New York Life and The Commonwealth Bank of Australia, rely on Trifacta to democratize data wrangling.

New investors in this round included Telstra Ventures, Energy Impact Partners, NTT DOCOMO Ventures, BMW iVentures and ABN AMRO Digital Impact Fund. UNH-IOL offers cable testing for automotive Ethernet

The University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) introduced OPEN Alliance TC9 Cable Testing to their Automotive Ethernet Test Group.

The UNH-IOL is now an approved test lab for 1000BASE-T1 cable testing to OPEN Alliance TC9, which allows for cable manufacturers to have unshielded and shielded twisted-pair cables tested for conformance for Automotive Ethernet applications.

As part of UNH-IOL’s Automotive Ethernet Test Services, the new TC9 Cable Testing service allows customers to verify their automotive cable assemblies and harnesses meet the OPEN Alliance requirements supported by Automotive OEMs, providing customers with confidence that the results are accurate and certified. This new service is now apart of the suite of OPEN Alliance testing the lab offers including TC1, TC10, and TC12 test specifications for PHY Conformance.

AT&T sees progress with ONF's SEBA, Trellis and other projects

Projects like Trellis, SEBA, OMEC, Stratum, and P4 are redefining what a modern network looks like, said Andre Fuetsch, President, AT&T Labs and Chief Technology Officer, speaking at the Open Networking Foundation’s Connect 2019 conference in Silicon Valley/

AT&T is currently using SEBA (Software-Enabled Broadband Access) to deliver gigabit-plus, low-latency home internet access via white box hardware to 500 homes in the U.S. The carrier plans to scale up in 2020 and beyond.

SEBA (SDN Enabled Broadband Access) is a lightweight virtualized broadband platform originally based on a variant of ONF’s R-CORD. It supports multiple virtualized access technologies at the edge of the carrier network (e.g. PON, G.Fast, DOCSIS), allowing each access technology to be controlled by OpenFlow. Furthermore, mediation software is provided to help operationalize the access devices and connect the SEBA implementation to OSS/BSS systems. SEBA supports both residential access and wireless backhaul and is optimized such that traffic can run ‘fastpath’ straight through to the backbone without requiring VNF processing.


Fuetsch also talked about progress with Trellis, which is seeing very deployment as well.

Trellis defines a solution for an open multi-purpose L2/L3 spine-leaf Ethernet switch fabric for edge data centers and for interconnecting multiple sites. It supports Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs) running on servers, network functions implemented directly within the switch fabric itself, and the interconnection of local and remote resources all in a single solution. Trellis builds a non-blocking fabric using OpenFlow controlled white box switching hardware and open source software. The Trellis fabric does not run any embedded control protocols on the switches (e.g. BGP, OSPF or RSTP). Instead, intelligence is moved into applications running on a clustered ONOS controller.

AT&T: 75% of MPLS tunnel data traffic under SDN control

AT&T has reached an inflection point in its efforts to virtualize its network and implement software-defined controls.

AT&T confirmed that 75% of the data traffic running through its multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) tunnels, which connect the core elements of its network, is now under SDN control.

RETN deploys Infinera on Europe-Asia terrestrial route

RETN deployed Infinera’s fourth-generation Infinite Capacity Engine (ICE4)-based platform to power its TRANSKZ network.

RETN, which is one of the fastest-growing independent European providers of Internet transit and connectivity services, operates its own end-to-end Eurasian network with unique geographical coverage. The TRANSKZ network stretches across a diverse terrain of more than 15,000 kilometers and interconnects critical markets which are currently underserved territories across the route.

Infinera said the new terrestrial deployment serves as an alternative to subsea cables on the Europe-to-Asia route. Enhanced with the latest-generation equipment, the high-performance network supports three diverse paths of similar lengths from Europe to the border of China via Kazakhstan in partnership with Transtelecom JSC, and offers low-latency and high-capacity services linking all major locations in commercial and financial hubs. Working closely with Infinera, RETN completed the final 4,000 kilometers of the main route in Kazakhstan and deployed services on the long-distance network in less than 30 days, accelerating time to revenue.

Russia's Inoventica selects ADVA's FSP 3000

Inoventica, one of Russia’s leading IT service providers and data center operators, has selected ADVA's FSP 3000 platform to meet soaring data demand from enterprise and carrier customers by boosting the capacity of its backbone network to 100Gb and up.

ADTRAN cited deployments of its XGS-PON solutions over the past year by network operators in North America, Europe and the Pacific Rim to deliver multi-gigabit services for residential, commercial, industrial and governmental broadband programs.

Caixin: Huawei to Raise $844 Million in First On-Shore Bond Sales

Huawei Technologies is seeking to raise RMB 6 billion (US$844 million) in its first sale of bonds to the domestic market, according to Caixin, a business journal in China. The article states that Huawei plans to use the funds for working capital and to maintain financial stability. The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and China Construction are listed as underwriters.

Mellanox on track to ship over 1 million ConnectX Adapters in Q3 2019

Mellanox Technologies announced it is on track to ship over one million ConnectX and BlueField Ethernet network adapters in Q3 2019, a new quarterly record.

The company says growth is driven by public and private clouds, telco operators and enterprise data centers seeking faster compute and storage platforms.

“We are thrilled to see ConnectX and Ethernet SmartNICs exceed the one million parts shipment mark in a single quarter. We expect this number to continue and grow in the coming quarters as more of the market is transitioning to 25 Gb/s Ethernet and faster speeds,” said Eyal Waldman, president and CEO of Mellanox Technologies.

Telefónica looks to sell 50,000 mobile towers

Telefónica disclosed plans to monetise a second portfolio of mobile sites within the next year.

In 2016, some of Telefónica network assets, including 18,000 mobile sites, were spun off into Telxius.

In this second sale of infrastructure assets, the carrier believes it could generate an estimated OIBDA of c. €360 million through the sale of approximately 50,000 sites.

Telefónica operates through a portfolio of c. 130,000 sites globally, and owns, directly or through its subsidiaries, a unique portfolio of c. 68,000 sites across 12 markets. In the UK, Telefónica owns c. 7,000 sites through its 50% interest in Cornerstone, which was jointly created in 2012 by Telefónica and Vodafone to operate their combined nationwide tower site infrastructure and support their active sharing arrangements. Telefónica and Vodafone have agreed to extend the agreement to include 5G roll-out and explore potential monetisation options for Cornerstone.

In Germany, Telefónica Deutschland currently owns nationwide c. 19,000 sites, making it one of the largest single country portfolios in Europe.

Telia appoints Christian Luiga as acting CEO

Christian Luiga has been appointed acting President and CEO of Telia effectively immediately, replacing Johan Dennelind, who announced his resignation in early August. A search for a permanent CEO is underway.

Luiga joined Telia in 2009 and headed Corporate Control until April 2014, when he was appointed CFO of the company. Douglas Lubbe has been appointed acting CFO in Telia Company. His most recent position was CFO of Telia Sweden.

Federated Wireless raises $51M for CBRS spectrum management

Federated Wireless, a start-up based in Arlington, Virginia, announced $51 million in Series C funding for its Citizens Band Radio Service (CBRS) spectrum management services.

Verizon boosts Virtual Communications Express with VoIP, SD-WAN, Webex Calling

Verizon is rolling out enterprise-specific enhancements to its premier cloud calling solution - Virtual Communications Express (VCE).

Verizon is delivering its VCE solution over its global VoIP service, and reinforced with hosted or premise based SD-WAN connectivity. The solution is also now available across Asia, Europe and the U.S.

Verizon is also now offering VCE via a Cisco Collaboration Flex Plan - Webex Calling. This combines hosted UC&C capabilities and Verizon’s VoIP connectivity with the added flexibility of Cisco’s Flex Plan licensing model. Verizon is the only carrier in the market that supports Cisco Webex Calling in Webex Teams on a private MPLS network providing enterprises with greater security for their business communications.

SD-WAN: Linking Policy to Carrier Networks for Improved Customer Experience



MEF Annual Meeting – July 2019, Shawn Hakl, Senior Vice President Business Products, Verizon, highlights the importance of the industry’s new SD-WAN services standard published by MEF. Among other things, standardization will help link policy to carrier networks to deliver a greater customer experience.

“SD-WAN is really the control plane for which virtualized functions will be implemented. As we see more capabilities built into the intelligent network – the Software-Defined Network – at the core of carriers, SD-WAN will really be the way that you interface policy with the carrier network.” This will be expressed in ways like enabling users to select slices in a 5G network.
