Airspan acquires Mimosa Networks

Airspan Networks, which offers 4G & 5G small cell access and backhaul solutions, has acquired Mimosa Networks, a developer of wireless broadband systems. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Mimosa, which was founded in 2012 and is headquartered in Santa Clara, California, leverages Multi-User MIMO technologies in its outdoor gigabit wireless platforms for service providers. Mimosa's access, backhaul, and client solutions are deployed in a hybrid-fiber-wireless architecture, including both Point-to-Point and Point-to-Multipoint applications.

Airspan said the deal strengthens its leadership in 5G network infrastructure, adding technologies and products, sales channels and customers.

“This important step in Airspan’s growth emphasizes critical new solutions in mobile and broadband and the addition of the Santa Clara team strengthens our capabilities in the disruptive massively scalable densification techniques that are required by the 4G/5G telecom expenditure cycle currently underway. Mimosa brings important intellectual property to the table and accelerates Airpsan’s path to delivering 5G features such as Massive MIMO to the industry” said Eric Stonestrom, CEO of Airspan. “Furthermore, Mimosa’s disruptive and award-winning fixed wireless technology addresses the rapidly growing wireless broadband markets and further establishes Airspan as a leader in the convergence of densified 4G/5G mobile network backhaul and Broadband Access. Also the strong distribution channel allows Airspan products to be sold to many more customers.

Mimosa Unveils Its Hotspot-to-the-Home Gateway

Mimosa Networks, a start-up based in Campbell, California, introduced its C5i Hotspot-to-the-Home Gateway for connecting to urban Wi-Fi networks.

Mimosa’s C5i packs a 4x4:4 Multi-User MIMO radio that leverages beamforming technology for automatic antenna aiming.  The device is self-installable and can connect to any outdoor 5 GHz Wi-Fi access point or to a Mimosa access point, which uses a TDMA protocol to optimize performance.

“Consumers can easily mount the device to a window and connect with the access point of their local Internet service provider. With a single device, the C5i can bring the Internet into the home at incredible speeds of up to 500 Mbps,” says Brian Hinman, CEO of Mimosa.

  • In August, Mimosa Networks unveiled its B5 Backhaul radio with coordinated Massive MIMO technology and Mimosa Cloud Services (MCS), featuring advanced network-wide planning and analytics. The company cited a number of innovations:

  • Advanced Colocation ­ -- the B5 radio makes the most of available spectrum. Using both GPS and GLONASS to maximize satellite sync through precision timing as well as sophisticated RF isolation techniques, the B5 radio offers maximum spectrum re-use for colocated devices.
  • Spectrum Multiplication -- leverages coordinated Massive MIMO technology, allowing colocated radios to deliver 16 MIMO streams, and 4 Gbps of throughput, all while sharing the same channel. 
  • Auto Everything ­-- the first radio to offer real-time spectrum analysis without service interruption. The B5 radio automatically optimizes bandwidth, frequency and power use based on historical and real-time data ­ allowing the radio to immediately adapt to any environmental change.
  • Dual Link ­-- actively load balances across two non-contiguous channels to provide unprecedented resiliency against interference.
  • Mimosa Cloud Services -- a cloud-based planning and analytics tool set for wireless service providers.  Enhanced with Google Maps mapping service, Mimosa's network design features allow operators to visually plan and design links while viewing their entire network in one location. Additional topology and obstruction information as well as environmental ITU-based data provide deeper understanding of how a link might operate in real-life.
The B5 Backhaul radio is available for order in two versions ­ an antenna-integrated 5 GHz backhaul radio (B5); and a connectorized radio-only version (B5c).  The B5 (List Price: $899 for B5, $839 for B5c) will begin shipping to customers in Fall 2014.

Mimosa Raises $20 Million for Massive MIMO Wi-Fi

Mimosa Networks, a start-up based in Campbell, California, $20 million investment in Series C funding for its work in last mile, gigabit wireless technology.

The latest funding was led by returning investor New Enterprise Associates (NEA). Oak Investment Partners also returned for its third round of investment in Mimosa, bringing the company’s total financing to $38 million.

The company plans to introduce a wireless product line for ISPs that leverages the most advanced Wi-Fi technology.  Mimosa has a partnership with Quantenna, which has previously disclosed plans for a 8x8 MU-MIMO chipset capable of 10Gbps speeds.

“The wireless industry is set to explode in the coming years, and Mimosa’s technology is unique in its ability to help networks scale to meet the needs of the global communications market,” said Greg Papadopoulos, venture partner, NEA. “We are excited to have the chance to ‘double down’ on a company so clearly poised to transform and revolutionize the wireless space.”
