Midokura Secures $20 Million for Network Abstraction

Midokura announced $20.4 million in Series B funding for its software network virtualization solutions.

Midokura Enterprise MidoNet (MEM)  technology offers an intelligent, software-based network abstraction layer between the hosts and the physical network, thereby decoupling the IaaS cloud from the network hardware.

The Series B funding participation came from Japanese Fintech company Simplex Inc., and existing investors Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ) and Allen Miner, a member of Midokura’s board of directors. The new funding brings Midokura’s total investment to over $44 million to date.

“Midokura aims to fundamentally transform and automate networking for any public, private or hybrid cloud and container deployment. Midokura Integrates with Ubuntu OpenStack

Midokura has integrated its flagship, enterprise network virtualization platform technology with Ubuntu OpenStack.

Juju is an open source service modeling and deployment tool, led by Canonical. Via Charms, Juju lets you design, deploy, connect and scale services for solutions of any size. The Midokura Juju Charm is immediately available in the Charm Store -- a collection of Charms that have been tested and approved by Canonical.

"Canonical continues to expand our SDN ecosystem to ease the deployment of OpenStack with an SDN. Midokura is an Ubuntu Cloud partner, and today Midokura Enterprise MidoNet is available to our customers through the MidoNet Juju Charm. The simplicity and agility inherent in MEM's distributed architecture is now easier to deploy with OpenStack," said John Zannos, Canonical VP of WW Alliances and Ecosystem. "With this seamless integration in place, Ubuntu OpenStack and MEM will be deployable in minutes using Juju and the MidoNet Juju Charm."

Separately,Midokura released Neutron plug-ins supporting OpenStack Liberty. The new release is also designed to advance container networking with the new Kuryr project, which integrates directly with native container networking components, such as libnetwork. Kuryr is the gateway between the container networking APIs and use cases, and the Neutron APIs and services. It bridges the gaps between Docker and Neutron and will drive the changes necessary to fill in the missing pieces in Neutron.

Dell Adds Midokura as Network Virtualization Overlay Option for OpenStack

Dell has added Midokura to its Open Networking initiative to include Midokura.  The deal includes a joint go-to-market program, validated reference architecture and global reseller agreement.

Midokura’s Enterprise MidoNet software will now be available on Dell infrastructure, delivering a network virtualization overlay for OpenStack that helps enterprise customers and service providers create an agile cloud networking infrastructure based on open technologies.

MidoNet is a software-based, highly-distributed network virtualization system that allows service providers and enterprises to build, run and manage virtual networks with increased control and flexibility. Leveraging industry standards and existing infrastructure, MidoNet provides network agility and scalability while helping reduce costs.

Dell said MidoNet fits well with its existing partnership with Cumulus Networks for its Linux operating system. The Dell, Cumulus Networks and Midokura solution enables a growing number of service providers and enterprise customers to provision scalable virtual networks to connect to physical workloads in a matter of minutes. Midokura MidoNet leverages Dell switches to facilitate network traffic flows from virtual machines to non-virtualized, physical workloads such as high-performance databases, email servers and legacy systems at line rate.

What this shows is that we’re actively connecting the dots with like-minded companies to upend the traditional, black-box model of networking,” said Tom Burns, vice president and general manager, Dell Networking. “That old model is too rigid, too locked and too slow to innovate. Midokura said it is committed to building a non-vendor driven community around the project and has dedicated resources to building and supporting a community of MidoNet users, including new staffing, a website and community infrastructure.

MidoNet is a highly distributed, de-centralized, multi-layer software-defined virtual network solution for the OpenStack Community. It replaces default OVS plugin from OpenStack deployments and offers a much more scalable and efficient networking solution for highly virtualized and cloud environments. MidoNet also provides L2-L4 services that are distributed at the network edge.

All of the code behind MidoNet is now available under the Apache 2.0 license, letting anyone in the popular and rapidly growing OpenStack community use, distribute and build on the technology, as well as submit back to the project. Midokura said it is committed to building a non-vendor driven community around the project and has dedicated resources to building and supporting a community of MidoNet users, including new staffing, a website and community infrastructure.

“We’ve been hard at work building our MidoNet solution for the past four years, well ahead of the competition,” said Dan Mihai Dumitriu, co-founder and CEO of Midokura. “The OpenStack Neutron community is quite fractured because multiple vendors are trying to sell proprietary solutions and thus have little incentive to invest in the default, which remains unfit for production.
