Liberty Global names CommScope as DOCSIS 4.0 partner

Liberty Global has selected CommScope to develop and deploy a Remote MACPHY Device (RMD) Node platform for DOCSIS 4.0 (D4.0), accelerating Liberty Global’s progress towards 10G capabilities.

This project marks the industry’s first D4.0 initiative in Europe and leverages CommScope’s DOCSIS leadership and end-to-end portfolio of solutions to deliver a new custom node and RMD platform specifically for Liberty Global. The RMD Node platform for D4.0 will simplify Liberty Global’s hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) network transformation to deliver multi-gigabit services—in turn providing its subscribers with seamless access to new high-bandwidth, low-latency services and enabling Liberty Global to ultimately achieve 10G capabilities on the HFC network cost-effectively.

“Our groundbreaking D4.0 project is an important step forward in our 10G vision for the future,” stated Colin Buechner, Managing Director and Chief Network Officer, Liberty Global. “We selected CommScope to extend the capabilities of our HFC network into the next decade, because of their proven leadership and expertise in DOCSIS and next-generation networks. Together, we are laying the path to tomorrow’s multi-gigabit services and providing our subscribers across Europe with the world’s most advanced and reliable services.”

“We are excited to partner with Liberty Global once again as we demonstrate our worldwide leadership in DOCSIS,” said Guy Sucharczuk, SVP and President, Access Network Solutions, CommScope. “Our long-standing partnership with Liberty Global uniquely positions us to deliver end-to-end D4.0 solutions specific to its HFC network. This is a showcase for the global transformation of HFC into tomorrow’s 10G networks, and we’re excited to deploy this technology in Europe and beyond.”

Liberty Global deploys Juniper's NFV

Liberty Global, the world's largest international TV and broadband company, has deployed Juniper Networks vMX as a virtual route reflector in its network footprint.

Juniper's vMX is a carrier-grade virtualized MX Series Universal Edge Router that runs as licensed software on x86-based servers, providing an NFV-based approach to building cloud-grade networks.

Juniper said implementing the vMX as a virtual route reflector provides efficient cost-effective control plane scale and performance and easily addresses future growth by simply spinning up new virtual reflectors on-demand. Virtual route reflection provides efficient scale in large border gateway protocol (BGP) networks, helping Liberty Global streamline operations and reduce total cost of ownership.

Liberty Global is an existing Juniper Networks customer and deploys Juniper's high-performance routing, switching and security solutions at various locations in their network.

"Virtualization solutions streamline our infrastructure, our operations environment and our global business outcomes. While our first NFV deployment is for virtual route reflection, we are also evaluating the vMX to rapidly add network capacity and new customers. The ability to leverage a broad set of virtual routing capabilities is very important to Liberty Global as it will enable agile service innovation and increased operational efficiency," stated Andy Grotzke, vice president, core network strategy & engineering at Liberty Global.

Liberty Global to Acquire Multimedia Polska

Liberty Global agreed to acquire the cable business of Multimedia Polska, the third-largest cable operator in Poland, in an all cash transaction valued at PLN 3.0 billion (approximately $760 million).

The PLN 3.0 billion purchase price equates to a multiple of 6.2x Multimedia’s 2015 full-year Adjusted EBITDA2 when adjusted for PLN 124 million (approximately $30 million1) of projected annual run-rate synergies3 derived from revenue and cost-related items.

Liberty Global already operates in Poland under its subsidiary UPC Poland. As of June 30, 2016, UPC Poland passed 3.1 million homes, or around 20% of total households in Poland, serving 1.4 million unique customers who subscribed to 2.9 million cable subscription services.

At the end of the second quarter of 2016, Multimedia passed 1.6 million homes mainly through its hybrid fiber-coaxial cable network, serving 832,000 unique customers who subscribed to 1.4 million subscription services consisting of 643,000 video, 491,000 broadband and 241,000 telephony RGUs. In addition, Multimedia had 54,000 mobile subscribers at June 30, 2016.

Mike Fries, CEO of Liberty Global, commented, “This acquisition will significantly increase our scale in Poland, where we are already the largest cable operator. It will also enhance our ability to invest in cutting-edge products and services for Polish consumers and businesses that will help drive organic growth across our enlarged footprint of over four million premises. Upon closing of the transaction, we will begin upgrading the Multimedia network, after which Multimedia’s customers will be able to enjoy superfast broadband speeds and our next-generation video service Horizon TV.”
