Australia’s NBNCo picks Nokia's 5G mmWave FWA

Australia’s NBNCo has selected Nokia's 5G mmWave Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) for a large-scale deployment reaching rural and suburban customers.

FWA currently covers almost 650,000 premises across Australia. This rollout will enable approximately 120,000 former satellite-only eligible premises access to fixed wireless services for the first time.

The 5G mmWave upgrade utilizes the 28 GHz band to be operated in Non-Stand Alone (NSA) mode along with cmWave spectrum and will help enable faster speeds on the network, including the launch of two new wholesale high-speed tiers – 100 Mbps and 250 Mbps.

Nokia’s mmWave solution introduces a high gain antenna design that can leverage mmWave to a range of up to 10km. The CPE comprises an outdoor unit installed on the roof of the premise and an indoor unit providing user interfaces for the customer, connecting to the outdoor receiver with a 2.5Gbps Power over Ethernet connection.

The devices will be used as part of nbn’s Fixed Wireless and Satellite Upgrade Program, a $750 million investment in the nbn Fixed Wireless network, made up of $480 million from the Australian Government supported by an additional $270 million from nbn.

Tarana pushes its FWA platform to 1.6 Gbps aggregate links

Tarana previewed an upcoming software update and an expansion into the the 6 GHz unlicensed band in the U.S. and Canada that will enable its ngFWA platform to cross into gigabit performance.

The next release of Tarana's G1 radio platform will support operation in the 6 GHz unlicensed channels. A software update will add "G1x2" mode, doubling the current 80MHz bandwidth of the G1 platform to 160MHz, organized as four independent 40MHz carriers — in either 5 or 6 GHz or both — to deliver up to 1.6 Gbps in aggregate for each G1 link. 1 in 6 GHz and G1x2 mode for both 5 and 6 GHz are expected to be generally available in mid 2023.  Operation in G1x2 mode will also be an option available for currently shipping 5 GHz G1 BNs and RNs, with accommodations required for the new rate/reach metrics involved.

The capabilities were demonstrated at Tarana's Digital Multiply launch event at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California.

G1 base nodes sold to date are expected to cover 20 million households and will have the capacity to serve as many as 1 million subscribers when fully deployed in the coming months — an unprecedented inaugural achievement.

Nextlink picks Tarana for fixed wireless broadband

Nextlink Internet, a rural-focused provider of high-speed internet and phone services in 11 states, has selected Tarana's G1 fixed wireless platform to compete in local markets with fiber providers.

The deployment will focus on under- and unserved communities and rural regions in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wisconsin. The team expects to expand service to hundreds of rural counties over the next several years, covering over a quarter million households.

Nextlink said it wil used Tarana’s G1 platform to go above and beyond its regulatory commitments, delivering 500 Mbps service where it was obligated to deliver 100 Mbps service. Finally, Nextlink plans on utilizing a combination of fiber and gigabit fixed wireless to meet its RDOF obligations. 

Tarana’s G1 platform can deliver gigabit services at impressive distances and in non-line of sight (NLoS) paths.

Telia Finland implements Nokia's 5G network slicing for FWA

Telia Finland is deploying of the world’s first commercial 5G standalone (SA) network with network slicing for Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services. 

Nokia will upgrade Telia’s entire 5G Radio Access Network infrastructure to enable 5G slicing utilizing equipment from its comprehensive AirScale portfolio including 5G radio and baseband products. Nokia’s industry-leading, energy-efficient 5G AirScale network portfolio delivers best-in-class connectivity and supports mobile operators rapidly transitioning to 5G standalone networks. 5G SA is the foundation for some of the most transformative 5G use cases such as cloud gaming and extended reality.

The capability enables Telia Finland to offer a range of broadband deals with guaranteed service levels to its customers by dynamically allocating a portion of the network for 5G FWA.

Nokia supplies 4G FWA over CBRS for California school district

Nokia delivered a 4G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) solution to the Dos Palos Oro Loma (DPOL) school district which encompasses five campuses and serves a population of 5,000 residents in the predominantly rural San Joaquin Valley in California. 

The Nokia solution will provide secure, reliable, high-performance internet access to the homes of 2400 students using Nokia Private 4.9G/LTE Digital Automation Cloud (NDAC) operating in the CBRS/On-Go GAA spectrum, and customer premises equipment (CPE) including Nokia FastMile 4G Gateways and WiFi Beacons. AggreGateway served as Nokia's partner on the project.

The DPOL technology team will operate its new LTE network through the centrally secure Nokia DAC Cloud monitoring application. DPOL will also provision LTE / Wi-Fi hotspots to students to be used with any standard laptop or tablet to access high-speed internet.

Paoze Lee, Technology Systems Director of the Dos Palos-Oro Loma school district, said: “As we put a plan in place for distance learning during the pandemic we found we could only provide coverage for approximately 50% of DPOL students via commercial wireless network providers. Working with Nokia and AggreGateway, we are taking the next steps to level the field and ensure every student has the same access to our learning facilities.”

Matt Young, Head of Enterprise for North America at Nokia, said: “We are pleased to help close the digital divide in the Dos Palos-Oro Loma school district. For many rural areas of the US it’s not commercially viable to build out networks, and often families on the lowest income suffer. The project’s first phase was completed in November 2021. Nokia and AggreGateway will complete the second phase in 2022.

Ooredoo Kuwait picks Nokia for 5G Fixed Wireless Access

 Ooredoo Kuwait has selected Nokia to supply 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) customer premise equipment.  Ooredoo is using FWA to extend the reach of its fiber network to premises not easily connected with direct fiber lines. This will support the company to significantly increase its fixed broadband customer base across the country.

Ooredoo is now offering the Nokia FastMile 5G Gateway as a premium internet device for residential and business customers.


Nokia’s self-installable 5G FWA gateway incorporates Wi-Fi 6 with self-optimizing mesh technology.

Verizon extends rollout of fixed 5G Home Internet to more cities

Verizon expanded its fixed 5G Home Internet service to more cities, including parts of Milwaukee and Tampa.

Verizon 5G Home Internet is now available in 30 markets.

The carrier says most customers can experience max download speeds up to 1 Gbps, with typical download speeds of 300 Mbps.

T-Mobile U.S. launches 4G/5G Home Internet service

T-Mobile U.S. officially launched its wireless Home Internet service with coverage to more than 30 million households, making T-Mobile one of the largest broadband providers in the entire country by service area — on its first day of service. 

Nearly 10 million of the households eligible for T-Mobile Home Internet are in rural areas where often there is only one other broadband provider or none at all.

T-Mobile Home Internet access runs over the carrier's 4G and 5G network. Monthly service is priced at $60 with no data cap. T-Mobile says most users should experience download speeds of 100 Mbps. Availability is based on network capacity, which is increasing all the time, as well as Wi-Fi Gateway inventory, which is limited by global supply chain constraints at launch.

Zain to deploy 60,000 Nokia 5G FWA gateways across Saudi Arabia

 Zain KSA will deploy 60,000 of Nokia's FastMile 5G Gateways across Saudi Arabia over the next 12 months. The 5G fixed wireless access gateways incorporate eSIMS (embedded SIM), aligning with Zain KSA’s digital transformation strategy to enhance the customer experience

Nokia FastMile 5G gateways take advantage of the company’s self-optimizing mesh Wi-Fi 6 solution for real time Wi-Fi performance optimization. Verizon expands fixed 5G home service in ATL, Dallas, Denver and SJ


Verizon is expanding its 5G Home Internet service to parts of Atlanta, Dallas, Denver and San Jose. The fixed 5G service is now available in parts of 12 markets across the U.S. The company says customers can experience peak download speeds of up to 1 Gbps, depending on location, with typical download speeds of 300 Mbps. The service is $50 per month for Verizon customers and $70 per month for non-Verizon customers.

T-Mobile US expands fixed wireless access (FWA) service

 T-Mobile is expanding its fixed wireless Home Internet service into more than 450 cities and towns across the U.S.  The carrier said it is targeting locations that AT&T is deserting as it moves away from DSL service.

T-Mobile is pricing the service at $50 per month with no data cap. The service currently runs over its LTE network, although T-Mobile said it is moving to 5G.

“We can’t stand idly by while AT&T leaves potentially millions with fewer home Internet options at a time when our connection to the Internet is so vital — for work, remote school, connection with family and friends. That’s why we’re undertaking this massive expansion,” said Mike Sievert, CEO of T-Mobile. “The Carriers and the Cableopoly have consistently over-promised and under-delivered when it comes to broadband access. Thanks to our merger with Sprint, we can end this and give millions in underserved communities more choices and competition for high-speed home broadband.”

Qualcomm, Casa and Ericsson complete 5G NR over mmWave at 3.8km

Qualcomm, Casa Systems and Ericsson completed the first extended-range 5G NR data call over mmWave, achieving a connection of 3.8 kilometers.

The extended range data call was completed in Regional Victoria, Australia on June 20, 2020. It was achieved by applying extended-range software to commercial Ericsson hardware – including Air5121 and Baseband 6630 – and a 5G CPE device powered by the Qualcomm® Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System with the Qualcomm QTM527 mmWave antenna module.

The companies said the demo sets the stage for using mmWave technology for fixed wireless access (FWA).

“With the introduction of the Qualcomm QTM527 mmWave antenna module as part of the Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System, we are empowering operators and OEMs to offer high-performance, extended-range multi-gigabit 5G broadband to their customers – which is both flexible and cost-effective, as they can leverage existing 5G network infrastructure,” said Gautam Sheoran, senior director, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.

Huawei and partners establish 4G/5G FWA Technology Forum

Huawei and 20 industrial partners jointly announced the establishment of the 4G/5G FWA Technology Forum as a platform that convenes industrial and ecosystem partners to jointly promote the rapid development of 4G and 5G FWA technologies.

Participating companies include ASR, Atel, Esound, Fibocom, FROG, GOSUNCN, HAIOT, Lintron, MaxComm, MobiWire, MOBOT, Neoway, NOTION, QUECTEL, Sequans, Tigercel, Tozed Kangwei, UNISOC, and Zmtel.

According to the joint declaration, the forum will serve to help:

  • Share trends in the industry, identify directions in technical development, accumulate successful experiences, and overcome business challenges.
  • Improve the 4G and 5G FWA technologies required to provide wireless broadband connection solutions with increased performance and cost-effectiveness.
  • Enhance the collaboration between FWA solution providers and mobile network operators to improve the industry's ecosystem and ensure business success.
  • Promote the success of the FWA industry to accelerate the provisioning of broadband access to anyone, anywhere, with the goal of "connecting the other half" of the world's population.

Verizon ramps up its fixed 5G home service

Verizon announced further expansion of its 5G Home Internet service in parts of Houston.

The service has also rolled out in parts of Detroit, Indianapolis and Los Angeles. By the end of 2020, Verizon's 5G Home Internet will be available in 10 cities nationwide.

Verizon also confirmed that it is working with Pivotal Commware, Inc., a Verizon Ventures portfolio company, to conduct trials in Dearborn, Michigan that improve 5G coverage and performance for residents and visitors by strategically placing intelligent repeaters to enhance and boost Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wide Band signal.

The trials in Dearborn focus on providing coverage to larger, multi-unit dwellings such as apartments or dormitories with multiple buildings and floors where repeaters are particularly helpful. Repeaters are small, consume less power than a small cell or macro site and do not require a fiber connection.

“Compared to lower spectrum bands, 5G over mmWave offers far more speed and throughput, is more energy efficient, experiences less signal interference over the air, and has a much greater capacity for expansive scalability,” said Kevin Smith, Vice President of Network Planning for Verizon. “As we’ve known since our very early trials, high band spectrum provides more limited coverage from macro cells. Introducing repeaters like the ones we are trialing from Pivotal will help us expand the footprint of our new 5G Ultra Wide Band network and provide another tool in the toolbox for robust network design.”

Nokia says 5G fixed wireless access is a top use case

Consumers across the world see 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) as the most desirable 5G use case, according to a new study commissioned by Nokia and conducted by Parks Associates.

The study, which was conducted by Parks Associates, surveyed 3,000 people in the UK, US and South Korea and examined consumer understanding and demand for 5G services across six different use cases including autonomous vehicles, video surveillance and immersive technologies. The research was conducted prior to the global COVID-19 pandemic.



Some highlights:

  • 76 percent of all respondents regard FWA as the most appealing use case overall, with 66 percent claiming they would subscribe to 5G FWA if it cost the same as their current broadband service and delivers the same or better performance. 
  • 90 percent rated high-quality, uninterrupted video streams a “very valuable” aspect of 5G. 
  • A majority of consumers find 5G video use cases attractive, with 66 percent rating video capture and streaming applications appealing, and 69 percent rating video detection and alerting appealing. More than one-third of consumers found AR experiences for remote commerce appealing even before the COVID-19 crisis. The need and appeal has likely increased with social distancing.
  • Nearly half of those who work remotely indicate a strong willingness to switch providers for 5G service and more likely to intend to purchase a 5G phone. Greatly expanded remote work experience may drive plan and phone upgrades.
  • Nearly two-thirds of early 5G users are highly satisfied with the speeds they experience on 5G networks, compared with less than half of 4G users.
  • 45 percent of all consumers find connected car concepts appealing with navigation and safety capabilities seen as most valuable, but this jumps to 73 percent amongst vehicle owners. 53 percent of vehicle owners said they would be interested in bundling car connectivity with a 5G data plan.
  • Two-thirds of consumers find 5G-enabled Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality services appealing and 56 percent were drawn to cloud gaming.

GSA: 30 operators now offer 5G-based Fixed Wireless Access

The Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) has established a Fixed Wireless Access Working Group to coordinate industry initiatives to deliver fixed wireless broadband services based on LTE and 5G access networks.

The founding members of the FWA Working Group are Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia, Samsung and ZTE.

To support the activities of the new Working Group, GSA has undertaken a study to determine the extent and nature of fixed wireless access broadband service availability based on LTE or 5G around the world. GSA analysed 927 companies including all known existing LTE operators, plus companies that are known to be investing in or have previously announced plans to invest in LTE networks (including trials, companies with licences, and those planning or involved in deployments), in 232 countries and territories.

Some highlights

  • Fixed wireless access broadband based on LTE is available worldwide, although is much more prevalent in some regions than others. 
  • GSA identified 395 operators in 164 countries selling FWA services based on LTE. 
  • In addition, of the 73 operators that have announced 5G launches worldwide, GSA counted 37 operators that have announced the launch of either home or business 5G broadband using routers. 
  • Of these 37, GSA identified 30 operators selling 5G-based FWA services.  

“As technology has improved, operators have been turning to mobile networks to deliver home and office broadband services, in some cases offering mobile-based services as an alternative to fixed-line broadband technologies,” said Joe Barrett, President, Global mobile Suppliers Association. “The home/office broadband services on offer are no longer limited to mobile data subscriptions associated with mobile phones, dongles, or even MiFi devices. They now include use of mobile technology to provide the main broadband connection for a home or business in the form of a fixed wireless access services. In a relatively short space of time, fixed wireless broadband access has become a mainstream service offer and the formation of this new GSA Working Group is testament to the acceleration in industry activity in Fixed Wireless Access.”

Qualcomm intros mmWave module for 5G Fixed Wireless Access

Qualcomm introduced a mmWave antenna module for 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) CPE. The company says its QTM527 mmWave antenna module for the Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System will open up the market for mobile operators to offer fixed internet broadband services to homes and businesses using their 5G network infrastructure.

The goal is to enable 5G fixed wireless access CPEs that can be deployed on a roof or in a window to receive a 5G signal.

The Qualcomm QTM527 mmWave antenna module builds on prior mmWave technology breakthroughs to extend 5G beyond the smartphone.

Qualcomm's QTM527 mmWave antenna module supports up to 64 dual polarization antenna elements for optimal and extended mmWave range. It suppors beam forming, beam steering and beam tracking for bi-directional communication, along with global band support for compatibility in every major region around the world.
