Nautilus Floating Data Center connected via fiber

A floating data center deployed on a barge in the San Joaquin River of Central California will use an innovative water cooling system to increase its power efficiency.

Located at the Port of Stockton, the barge-mounted 10,000 square foot carrier-neutral data center is connected to an 18 mile, redundant, high count fiber ring that Utility Telecom built to link the unique facility to a local carrier hotel.

Clearfield supplied its portfolio of  Clearview cassettes, FieldShield Drop Assemblies, terminals, cabinets, frames and enclosures for connecting the tightly packed spaces of the barge.

The companies said that installing high-speed fiber connectivity from land onto a water-based data center represented the latest, unique fiber deployment challenge for Clearfield’s products to solve. Limited access into the data center and a lack of traditional telecommunication demarc connection points required a creative approach, working with Utility Telecom to deliver and connect the fiber that brought the data center online.

Nautilus Data Technologies’ patented zero-impact water cooling system enables the highest density compute at 1.15 PUE or less with a 30 percent reduction in energy-related CO2 and air pollution. The  system operates without consuming water, producing wastewater, or using refrigerants and chemicals, making it harmless to water and wildlife.

“We are changing the dynamics of the data center industry by factoring sustainability and impact as equal value to the compute environment, resiliency, and scale,” said Ashley Sturm, Vice President of Marketing, Nautilus Data Technologies. “The team at Clearfield and Utility Telecom helped design a network to meet specific needs so we can maximize the opportunity for our company and clients.”

“Providing the right connection options is fundamental to how we approach the market, especially for companies like Nautilus Data Technologies that deliver a unique solution that can change the game for their respective industry,” said Michael Wood, National Market Manager – Utilities, Clearfield. “We believe we can help our operator partners overcome any challenge or obstacle their deployment environment presents as they roll out fiber networks to help take their network and customers further.”

Clearfield's fiber-optimized outdoor cabinet adds air conditioning option

Clearfield has added an air conditioner option to its FieldSmart Fiber Active Cabinet (FAC) product line for outdoor enclosures.

The air conditioner option enables the deployment of routers, switches and other non-hardened devices in fiber-fed, outdoor cabinets closer to the end customer.

The FieldSmart FAC sizes that accommodate the air conditioner option also include the following elements:

  • FieldSmart FAC 3200 features two front and rear 16RU 23” frames that can accommodate up to 32RU of active electronics while providing up to 576 internal fiber distribution ports for deployments.
  • FieldSmart FAC 5400 features two swing frame front and rear 27RU 23” frames that can accommodate up to 54RU of active electronics and provides up to 1,152 internal fiber distribution ports for deployments.
  • FieldSmart Fiber Active Cabinets are designed to accommodate the variety of standard options expected in remote cabinets, such as the rectifier system, battery warmers and field upgradeable fiber bulkheads.

“Customers are telling us they need to place non-hardened active equipment deeper in the network requiring climate-controlled air conditioners that maintain operating temperature inside the cabinet,” said Johnny Hill, Clearfield’s chief operating officer. “The challenge our customers face is that the development times to engineer these devices so that they can be deployed in the outside plant isn’t feasible if they want to take early advantage of market demand. By adding this feature to our FACs, we’re solving that problem for them, with the added benefit of having one partner that’s able to work with them on any deployment.”

Clearfield adds Multi-Purpose Terminal for 5G

Clearfield announced an addition to its YOURx terminal product line -- a craft-friendly, outside plant (OSP)-rated housing for any fiber distribution and drop cable network.

The YOURx MPT is cable agnostic, accepting any industry cable with a diameter of up to .70”, providing easy installation and a water-tight seal for placement below grade, in a similar fashion to a splice case. Designed to meet Telcordia GR-487 and GR-3125 specifications, the product can be installed on a strand, attached to a pole, attached to a wall or contained within a pedestal. The adapter plate inside the YOURx MPT can be configured to accept either 8-SC, 16-LC or 8-MPO connectors with the ability to mix and match connectors within the same terminal—a valuable feature for network design.

The YOURx terminal product line minimizes the amount of splicing done in outside plant equipment and eliminates the need for splicing downstream of the closure as components, including WDM’s, splitters, and drop cables arrive as pre-connectorized assemblies.

Key product features include:

Eight individual sealed distribution drop ports with a snap in splice chip, supporting 12 loose tube splices or 36 mass fusion splices and the ability to store up to 8’ per buffer tube.
Entry point that uses a split sleeve grommet design for easy installation.
Slide off bulkhead plate allowing installers easy access for cleaning or testing connectors.

“Customers are seeking both mid-span and terminal solutions that support fiber delivery with standard connectors, low insertion loss and a cost-effective method for deploying business services and small cells” said Kevin Morgan, Chief Marketing Officer, Clearfield. “Only providing the number of fibers needed and consolidating splicing/termination locations saves on both material and labor costs.”

Clearfield to expand manufacturing capacity at facility in Mexico

Clearfield based in Minneapolis, a specialist provider of fibre management solutions for communication service providers, announced the expansion of manufacturing capacity at its facility in Tijuana, Mexico.

Through the addition of space and employees at its Tijuana site, Clearfield plans to quadruple its manufacturing presence in Mexico. The initiative is intended to help Clearfield lower its product manufacturing costs, as well as enable the company to meet short lead times and achieve on-time deliveries.

Clearfield stated that the Mexico facility is modelled on its U.S. manufacturing facilities in Minneapolis, and as with its U.S. location is fully equipped with passive optical LAN technology providing fibre-to-the-desktop and fibre-to-the-workstation functionality.

The company noted that, as an established supplier of scalable solutions for the FTTx market, the expansion is an indicator of growing market demand for its line of fibre management and fibre delivery solutions.

Clearfield designs, manufactures and distributes fibre optic management, protection and delivery products for communications networks. The company's 'fibre to the anywhere' platform is designed to address the specific requirements of incumbent local exchange carriers (ILECS), competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs), wireless operators and MSO/cable TV companies, as well as to meet the broadband needs of the utility/municipality, enterprise, data centre and military markets.
