Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Salesforce target Carbon Removal

 Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Salesforce have formed a coalition to identify and scale next-generation nature restoration projects that remove carbon from the atmosphere.

The Symbiosis Coalition will function as an advance market commitment (AMC)for nature-based removal credits in the voluntary carbon market. These companies have collectively committed to contract up to 20M in nature-based carbon removal credits by 2030 that have high certainty of impact on the climate and result in equitable outcomes for the communities whose livelihoods depend on these projects.

Specifically, Symbiosis intends to serve as an independent, non-profit joint procurement vehicle for nature-based carbon removal credits guided by five quality pillars: conservative accounting, durability, social and community benefits, ecological integrity, and transparency. Members will have the opportunity to purchase carbon removal credits that count towards their pledge through a joint RFP in addition to their own efforts. The initial RFP will focus on afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation projects (ARR), inclusive of agroforestry.

“High-quality, nature-based solutions are vital to addressing climate change, and our work with the Symbiosis Coalition is a key step towards realizing our carbon negative goal by 2030 through a diversified portfolio of carbon removal. Dell and Ericsson enter strategic partnership for RAN cloud

Dell Technologies and Ericsson have announced a strategic partnership aimed at combining their extensive industry expertise in telecom software, solutions, and support. This collaboration is designed to guide communications service providers (CSPs) through their radio access network (RAN) cloud transformation journeys, enabling them to achieve improved economics and agility while maintaining network reliability.

According to a new study by MeriTalk, sponsored by Dell Technologies, nine in ten CSPs consider network transformation critical to their organization’s survival. Despite this, 96 percent of surveyed CSPs report that their network transformation vision is lagging due to factors such as limited time, budget constraints, and concerns over reliability and security. These challenges hinder their ability to provide customers with modern network solutions. Dell and Ericsson’s partnership seeks to address these issues by offering simple and reliable Open RAN-based network cloud transformation strategies, leveraging their integrated solutions and support.

In 2023, Ericsson and Dell Technologies began collaborating on Cloud RAN solutions, combining Ericsson’s Cloud RAN software and RAN equipment with Dell Technologies’ infrastructure. Their joint efforts aim to expand the ecosystem and provide customers with greater flexibility. The new agreement further solidifies their commitment to this goal by focusing on the development of tailored network cloud transformation plans, the commercial introduction of Ericsson Cloud RAN software on Dell PowerEdge servers, and the co-development of services to simplify deployment and operational management.

AWS to invest EUR 15.7 billion in Spain

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a significant investment plan of €15.7 billion in Spain, aimed at bolstering its AWS Europe (Spain) region. This investment is projected to support the equivalent of 17,500 full-time jobs annually in local businesses and contribute €21.6 billion to Spain's GDP by 2033. The initiative highlights Spain's strategic importance as a digital hub in Southern Europe, leveraging the country's excellent connectivity and favorable climatic and energy conditions. The investment also aligns with Spain's recently approved AI strategy.

Spanish Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Function, José Luis Escrivá, emphasized the strategic significance of AWS's investment, noting that it solidifies Spain's position as a leader in technological innovation and artificial intelligence in Europe. The investment will particularly benefit the region of Aragón, where 40% of the estimated national jobs (around 6,800) will be located. These jobs will span various sectors, including construction, facility maintenance, engineering, and telecommunications. Moreover, over half of the projected contribution to Spain's GDP will be concentrated in Aragón.

AWS's commitment to Aragón includes establishing a sustainable and technologically advanced infrastructure. Suzana Curic, AWS General Manager for Iberia, reiterated the company's dedication to supporting Spain through continued collaboration with local schools and community initiatives. AWS aims to maintain 100% renewable energy usage in its Aragón data centers and explore innovative, efficient, and sustainable operational practices. The investment also marks a sixfold increase from AWS's initial €2.5 billion plan announced in 2021.

Sparkle Lands BlueMed Submarine Cable in Greece

Sparkle, Italy’s first international service provider and a leading global operator, has successfully landed the BlueMed submarine cable in Chania, Greece. The announcement was made at a press conference held at the Italian Ambassador’s Residence in Athens, attended by key figures including Paolo Cuculi, the Italian Ambassador, and Dimitris Papastergiou, Greece’s Minister of Digital Governance. The event highlighted the strategic significance of the cable, which aims to enhance digital connectivity between Italy, France, Greece, and other Mediterranean countries.

The BlueMed cable is part of the broader Blue & Raman Submarine Cable Systems, a project developed in collaboration with Google and other operators. This system extends connectivity from Italy through the Mediterranean and further into the Middle East, reaching Mumbai, India. Equipped with four fiber pairs and an initial design capacity exceeding 25 Terabits per second (Tbps) per pair, BlueMed is set to provide high-speed internet connections and advanced solutions for ISPs, carriers, telecom operators, and content providers, catering to the rising digital demands in these regions.

The installation of BlueMed began in 2023 with the primary Tyrrhenian trunk linking Genoa and Palermo, with additional branches to Marseille, Bastia, Golfo Aranci, and Pomezia. From Palermo, the cable has traversed the Strait of Messina to Crete, with plans for further expansion in the Mediterranean towards Aqaba in Jordan. Currently, the Tyrrhenian and Middle Eastern segments are operational, with the entire route from Genoa to Aqaba expected to be fully functional by the end of this year. Sparkle is also enhancing its data center in Chania to support this infrastructure and future projects like GreenMed, aiming to improve connectivity between Central Europe, the Balkans, and the Eastern Mediterranean.

NVIDIA hits revenue of $26 billion, up 262% yoy

NVIDIA reported quarterly revenue of $26.0 billion, up 18% from Q4 and up 262% from a year ago. 

GAAP earnings per diluted share was $5.98, up 21% from the previous quarter and up 629% from a year ago. Non-GAAP earnings per diluted share was $6.12, up 19% from the previous quarter and up 461% from a year ago.

“The next industrial revolution has begun — companies and countries are partnering with NVIDIA to shift the trillion-dollar traditional data centers to accelerated computing and build a new type of data center — AI factories — to produce a new commodity: artificial intelligence,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. “AI will bring significant productivity gains to nearly every industry and help companies be more cost- and energy-efficient, while expanding revenue opportunities.

“Our data center growth was fueled by strong and accelerating demand for generative AI training and inference on the Hopper platform. Beyond cloud service providers, generative AI has expanded to consumer internet companies, and enterprise, sovereign AI, automotive and healthcare customers, creating multiple multibillion-dollar vertical markets.

“We are poised for our next wave of growth. The Blackwell platform is in full production and forms the foundation for trillion-parameter-scale generative AI. Synopsis posts sales of $1.455 billion, up approximately 15%

Synopsis reported revenue of $1.455 billion for its second quarter of fiscal year 2024, up approximately 15% year over year and at the high-end of guidance.

Quarterly GAAP earnings per diluted share were $1.92; non-GAAP earnings per diluted share were $3.00, up approximately 26% year over year and exceeding guidance.

Raising full year targets for revenue and non-GAAP EPS, based on strong execution and continued business momentum.

Nokia completes acquisition of Fenix for defense expertise

Nokia completed its previously-announced acquisition of Fenix Group, a privately held company specializing in tactical communications solutions for defense communities. This acquisition, first announced in December 2023, enhances Nokia's capabilities in the defense sector by integrating Fenix's advanced broadband tactical communications products into its portfolio. Dell'Oro: Mobile Core Network market under stress

 Due to economic headwinds, the Mobile Core Network (MCN) market dropped 10 percent in 1Q 2024, according to a new report from Dell'Oro Group. The 5G MCN market growth rate continues to decelerate in 1Q 2024.

 “The four-quarter rolling average has developed an ominous downward trend for three quarters as economic headwinds tighten their grip on the market, moving into negative territory in year-over-year growth rate in 1Q 2024,” stated Dave Bolan, Research Director at Dell’Oro Group. “This suggests that the downward trajectory will last at least one more quarter after the market high in 1Q 2023 falls out of the four-quarter rolling average. In addition, the 5G MCN market, based on the four-quarter rolling average, has now decelerated for five quarters in a row.

 “Inflation has impacted the ability of some Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to raise capital, and it has also impacted subscribers when it comes to upgrading their phones to 5G. Many MNOs have lowered their CAPEX plans and announced that they have fewer than expected 5G subscribers on their networks; which limits MNOs' growth plans. As a result, we are lowering our expectations for 2024 from a positive growth rate to a negative one,” continued Bolan.

 Additional highlights from the 1Q 2024 Mobile Core Network and Multi-Access Edge Computing Report include:

  • As of 1Q 2024, 51 MNOs have commercially deployed 5G SA eMBB networks with two additional MNOS launching in 1Q 2024.
  • Based on the four-quarter rolling average trends, CALA and EMEA are trending into negative territory in terms of Y/Y revenue growth rates. North America is also trending into negative territory, while Asia Pacific, including China, is trending positive as of 1Q 2024.
  • Based on the four-quarter rolling average trend, the top four vendor rankings and shares remained stable between 4Q 2023 and 1Q 2024.

Netrouting picks Nokia for Optical + IP in data centers

Ampere Computing has released its annual update, showcasing the company's commitment to sustainable, power-efficient computing for the Cloud and AI sectors. The announcement included a collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. to develop a joint AI inferencing solution. Expedera raises $20 million for AI chip tech

Expedera, a start-up based in Santa Clara, California, raised $20 million in Series B funding.

Expedera is a licensor of edge inference artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductor intellectual property (IP.

Expedera introduced its Origin NPU IP in 2021. Origin IP scales to 128 TOPS with a single engine and features highly efficient processor utilization with market-leading low-power consumption while requiring minimal external memory bandwidth. Expedera has production license contracts with multiple smartphone OEMs and numerous automotive, AR/VR/MR, and consumer device chipset makers. Its Origin IP has been deployed in over 10M devices.

The company says the funding will enable it to advance its high-performance, energy-efficient Neural Processing Unit (NPU) IP products and services and expand its global engineering footprint.

The funding round was led by indie Semiconductor, with participation from prominent repeat and new industry investors. This investment, which includes converting a previous SAFE note, brings the company's total funding to more than $47M.

Nokia is instrumental in the development of Signetbreedband’s new core network, "Connectivity Core." Nokia has deployed its 7250 interconnect router (IXR) family to build a resilient, scalable, and high-performance MPLS-based core network for Signetbreedband. Additionally, the 7250 IXR routers provide termination points for all regional Points of Presence (POPs).

The deployment also includes Nokia's 7750 Service Router (SR) as the Broadband Network Gateway (BNG), which is crucial for Signetbreedband’s business service networking architecture. The BNG enables automatic authentication, authorization of network access, enforcement of bandwidth policies, and recording of usage data for accounting. This evolution allows Signetbreedband to transition from static provisioning to an automated, centralized system using advanced protocols like NETCONF for improved data configuration management.
